Is this a pure coincidence? What are we witnessing?!
Great take! His lack of heart makes him a bench cancer (if not a locker room cancer) and therefore makes his team lose. Supposed stars who don’t put in their full effort get noticed by their teammates.
Once is happenstance.
Twice is coincidence.
Three times is enemy action.
@@igmusicandflying and 4th time?
The Kings should try to trade him to Minnesota for Rossi (who the Wild want to get rid of in favor of a bigger guy, so it would be a win-win), including an 8 year extension deal for the latter.
His play in the minors @@MatsLM
As an Oiler fan, Dubois very quickly became my favourite player for LA. As you mentioned he almost single handedly gave Edmonton the W in the series.

Word in wpg was Hellebuyck wouldn’t re-sign unless Dubois was gone. Dubois traded, Hellebuyck signs
What is it about Winnipeg that seems to attract so much drama like this, lol
Exactly, I'm surprised he didn't included that in his video. Hellebuyck literally signed one or two days after the trade.
That worked out really good didn't it. The Jets resigned him and supposedly got so much better and... same result
Yea and he got hellacooked by the avs 😂
@dannykobayashi758 and then Hellebuyck gets lit up for over 5 goals per game in the playoffs! LMAO And this whole "word is..." gossip BS is rarely true. It's just a case of one person making of something juicy, and then gossip bags spreading it.
Dubois' agent is the real hero for duping the Kings into signing that extension.
Can't deny he has an excellent agent. Bravo for that lol
@@jeeplivion No, kidding. When I saw what he signed for I thought, "Did the Kings watch any of his games?" No way he was going to live up to that contract. Their moronic mistake and Dubois' gain.
Agreed. He was a disappointment in Winnipeg for sure, I was happy when they dished him for such a good deal.
@@AnHourOfWolves He was good in Winnipeg, he just didn't want to stay. IMO, it was good of him to clearly express his wishes not to stay to management, that way they could get value for him. That's a lot better than what Tavares did to the Islanders, string them along telling them he wants to stay. Only to sign elsewhere and they lose him for nothing.
@@steve8803 I agree, he does let people know when he wants to move, for sure. My impression was that He wasn’t horrible in Winnipeg, however he was hot and cold, and didn’t really have a huge impact. It is great that they got to move him tho! Sad that the jets went out in five games this year 😣
Canadiens dodged an absolute missile not trading for this guy lol
So glad Kent Hughes stayed away from this guy.
bullshit....this is exactly what the canadiens need
I was happy Montreal didn't go after this guy.
But... the Kings don't play normal hockey. They play 1-3-1
Fun fact: Leon Draisaitl has the same cap hit as PL DuBois.
Ehhhh only for another year. Drai is most likely going to ask for something in the $15 mil range next season.
@MrZachtheKingsfan I can't see that being the case if they want to actually win the cup anytime soon. Even McDavid didn't ask for an absurd contract. They probably sign him for 11-13 million. For sure not worth 15 million
@@MrZachtheKingsfan - yeah but OP is talking about the current numbers.
@@SimRacingVeteran Which still isn’t really comparable since PLD signed this contract last season, and Drai signed his back in 2017. People back then thought that was an overpay too. @@kingsfan2099 Example Seriously!!! Blake 7 years as VP and GM with nothing to show for in the playoffs 3 first round exits ! Now VP Luc Robitaille sitting on the sidelines watching Blake destroy the Kings on his watch! Both Blake and Luc need to GO NOW with PLD!
@randombutrelevant1606 So by your standards then, the first bad deal is worthy of being fired? I don't agree with that standard but everyone has an opinion.
@karokaro7328 totally agree! Good points. Both Luc and Rob have to go.
@kingsfan2099 they have gotten worse the past 3 years in a row. Management has to be held accountable
I hate PLD for his garbage attitude and horrendous effort. The funniest part is his fucking smug look all the time like he's got no idea why he isn't getting calls his way. 100% Rob Blake has to buy him out, If he doesn't he'll lose his job.
Nailed it. I have the same sentiment towards PLD.

Blake announced Dubois is NOT being bought out. Goodbye, LA Kings.

@@omfg322 “kicking your butt” you say? 😏
Vancouverite here: we're all trying to forget those days... will take a couple more years to accomplish this. Benning was up and down at drafting (gave us Hughes, Pettersson, and Boeser, but somehow chose Virtanen and Juolevi over Nylander and Sergachev) but as for contracts and free agents? OMG!!! Who will ever forget Eriksson and Beagle.... and trading away 9th overall pick to rid himself of these same contracts -- basically compounded an error.
LA needs a new GM they lost the walker trade , the durzi trade and the PLD trade last off season
Still paying some of the salary for the Petersen signing...the list could go on. Blake has made some good moves, but not enough to outweigh the bad. I don't know how Blake hasn't been fired already, and rumor is that he WON'T be.
Walker trade was a fleecing.
I liked Durzi, but the guy was a turnover machine, and we have plenty of those on the team..
@bearcookie13 your not wrong but he had value and blake didn't get that value in return , can't lose all the trades you make in an off season then be surprised when your season is disappointing
It was a terrible trade at the time and the contract has aged terribly.
Not even a kings fan but when i saw that trade i was so damn confused it made actually no sense to me.
And if they were patient they probably coulda landed landed Lindholm from Calgary who would've fit in way better in LAs system.
In all fairness it aged exactly how many fans thought it would. PLD just not playing on the Jackets people were sketched out on him. Because demand a trade sure, you never stop trying. Then he went to the jets and starting throwing hissy fits wanting traded again most fans were like "oh hell no." and imagine that, they were right.
Dubois made the Kings a weaker team than they were before.

I dont think PLD is the most "hated" per say. Dont think many if any people would mention him being a hated player in a conversation. They would mention him if people got on the topic of whos the most sorry ass pathetic low energy low enthusiasm low moral player in the league. Then PLD would be mentioned right away.
Montreal is going to send the LA kings,a draft pick as a thank you for saving montreal from making the PLD mistake
Winnipeg got that draft pick when they traded PLD
LA has come out and said today, they will not buy out Dubois, so that is how that is going.
Yeah no surprise. Blake has refused to fix a single mistake he's made apart from firing Todd this year. He's so bought into his role he actually thinks he's progressing the team. Absolutely wild.
And they should not. Far, far better to eat 50% of his cap hit for 6 or 7 years than to keep paying him out for 14 years.
At 50% of that contract, someone will be willing to take a chance on Dubois. That risk is manageable. The whole darned thing? Not so much.
@@DneilB007 no, if they ate his contract at this moment before july 1, they would only pay 1 million something, after july 1st it would go up to 3 something million. so that is why, it would be cheaper to eat his contract now, so they would only have to pay out 1. something for 8 years instead of 3. something for 8 years.
@@DneilB007 People keep talking about a 50% retention (x2 teams), but that's $4.25 million a year for 7 years for a player you don't even have, anymore.
I haven't seen a team retain that much for that long, yet... except for LTIR / cap floor shenanigans with other teams' injury retirees.
Imagine being dumb enough to think PLD would ever stop being the biggest waste of talent in the league. Talent alone has never been enough to get it done at this level and when you play your way/just demand your way out of every team you play on... probably a good sign you don't deserve a huge contract.
NHL teams don’t touch guys like him with a ten foot pole, no matter how good of a player they are. Chemistry is everything in hockey, and one selfish dick can throw the whole locker room off.
I was shocked when I saw the trade. Not only was it a massive overpayment on PLD for his contract( you don't give a guy with a career high of 28G 63P 8.5 M), but to give that many assets back is insane
the guys never cracked 30 goals or 70 points but lets pay him like a franchise superstar.
Upon his first return to Winnipeg, I tried to get the crowd to chant "P L Diva" but it never caught on...a shame that. It seems even more fitting now
There was a video making the rounds a few years ago (back when he was on the Jackets) of Dubois blatantly putting in the bare minimum of effort at looking like he was "trying" on a shift. The fact that *multiple* teams have traded for him since then blows my mind.
I've watched hockey for almost 25 years, and I don't think I've ever seen a player with a worse attitude than him.
I watched that live (on TV) and the commentators were losing their minds (almost as much as Torts was).
How to automatically make your team better? Acquire Dubois, then immediately get rid of him!
That trade WPG made was grand larceny.
I think the kings overpaid for him too; Instead of a second round pick it probably could've been a (5th and a 7th), or (a 4th with Winnipeg giving back a 7th)
Dubois is poison. Why any team would sign him is beyond me.
I always thought PLD was the most overrated player for years. This proves it.
I love you
GMs giving out these crazy contracts deserve everything they get.
The problem is, he still has his fucking job.
And to think - Boston wanted to trade their Vezina Trophy goalie Linus Ullmark for......THIS! Dodged a canonball there
You forgot he turns 26 a day before game 7 is scheduled to be played and they can’t buy him out till 48 hours after the Stanley up winner is determined
So even if they wanted to buy him they can't lmao what a mess
@@nathanbrisebois8756 I think if the final ends in 4 they’ll be able to, like with a 12 hour window
Dubois could have been a star in Columbus but he was a selfish whiney player with effort problems, he could have been a star in Winnipeg but clearly showed he didn’t want to be there and continued effort issues, he could be a star for the Kings but once again effort issues. He is and always will be a selfish, whiney, player. He wants to go to Montreal, who may not take that risk
Not buying out PLD is going to be what sinks any chance this Kings team becomes a contender in the future.
The penalties were one thing, but you didn't even mention the giveaways and weak puck battle losses that helped out the Oilers in that series
Trading for PLD, even at the time of the trade, was a huge contention. PLD plays like an entitled rich kid whos unwilling to do the work of an 8.5 millions dollar a year player. Luc knew some people who were close to PLD and he bought their bullshit about him. Best bet is to buyout his contract and move on. Too bad we also lost 2 certified NHLers but also a good 4c and a pick. Dude was a huge bust and its best to cut ties before the Kings are on the hook for that entire dumpster fire of a contract.
PLD has a losers mentality. I noticed in Winnipeg when things weren’t going his way or his team was losing, he would goon it up.
I think this is a bit of an old school mentality -- you look at some of the teams in 80s and 90s (and 70s lol) and you'd see teams take 5 stupid penalties a game. And players would sometimes take roughing/fighting penalties if they were well behind. Showed they cared or that they wanted to send a message to the other team. (About as stupid as it gets, I know.) Coaching and team discipline changed a lot somewhere around the year 2000. I suspect this has to do with Olympic teams finally figuring out how to win (I'm thinking Canada especially.) Canadian national teams now take less penalties than their opposition. Real sea change. PLD didn't get that message. Then again, he hasn't played on the big national team much.
@@gameburn178 it just seems like he can’t handle his emotions and it negatively affects his whole team.
PLD is the problem and I see him asking for a trade out of LA in 2 seasons. PLD's track record: Year 1 he's a slightly below average player. Year 2 he's a slightly above average player. Year 3 he starts out strong then gives up on his team and requests a trade out of the organization. so by the end of the 25/26 season he is gonna stop playing hockey and give lazy shifts and request a trade out of LA by the end of the season
Buy him out, 2M a year is almost free compared to how much his toxicity hurts the team in the long run.
I had to put up with him for two seasons in Winnipeg ... The Jets unloaded him at the right time! He actually had a pretty good season with the Jets before he got traded ... I am so happy the JETS got rid of him!
Yeah, they performed so well this year in the Playoffs. 🙄
@@GizmoBeach This has nothing to do with what he said. Jets still got the way better end of the trade.
as a jets fan, i think its good to also mention that its rumoured (idk if its ever been fully confirmed) that hellebyuck wouldnt resign with the jets unless dubs got the boot, and once he did, helle resigned like a few days after. i feel like that shows how his teammates felt about him pretty clearly
Rob Blake has essentially confirmed they aren’t going to look into buying him out. Their best hope going forward is that he either flicks on a switch and becomes a dominant force for the first time in his career, or they hope he waives his NMC so they can trade him somewhere with retention.
Blake needs to go
Winnipeg also hoped that switch would flip but it didn’t. The switch will remain to off.
In his first media availability after being traded to the Jets, everyone in Winnipeg knew he would not re-sign with the Jets. He made it pretty clear on day 1. So he gave just enough effort for the Jets to fleece a trade. Chevy did the Kings dirty
I was convinced the Habs were going to trade Suzuki for him...how could they pass up on a deal that stupid?? Then a dim light bulb seemed to flicker in the heads of management...
Thank goddddd we traded him for so much better players AND A SECOND ROUND PICK w trade.
PLD joined Canada at the worlds, what a waste of a spot
As a jets fan I'm very glad he's gone. Getting rid of wheeler was also a big help
As a Kings fan I hated this signing from the second pen went to paper I would love to be wrong about it but man if his first year here didn’t put a kink in that
Blake’s answer to the problem? " He’s just going to have to play better"? He’s just a big as disaster as PLD!
Prediction: LA buys him out and Edmonton signs him to a 1x1 deal
NHL referees have a secret plan to confuse fans by calling penalties the opposite of what they actually are. Slash across the hands=hooking… tripping = holding…. Holding is interference…. Interference is holding the stick…. Etc.
Well this video makes me even happier that Ullmark said no to that LA trade, dude's a jinx.
As an Oilers fan, I loved seeing him on the ice during the series. He was practically playing in our favor.
Very big and important note here
The buy out period DOESNT START until the cup is awarded. The latest the cup could be awarded is June 27th PLD’s birthday is June 24th. The Kings may not even have the opportunity to buy him out before his birthday
8.5 a year for Dubois is one of the worst deals I could imagine. He never gives any effort on defense.
ship Dubois to your biggest rival so you can beat them every time
I’d love to see this guy succeed but I literally don’t know what this mofo needs. This goes to show no matter how much talent you have, if your work ethic and mindset suck, so will you everytime
Get rid of him asap….his history proves that is the best move.
That's crazy. Imagine being a top talent and finding out you've only made teams worse. Ugh. They sucks for the teams and for him.
Dubois is VERY good. He just needs to try. Also it's not his fault the coaching play him at center because he is NOT a center. He was a winger and his dad (if i remember correctly) made him try center and PLD did not like it at all.
Sure Pierre, sure.
@@OhYaSure ?
Youre right hes VERY good, thats why he should be criticized for constantly wasting it. His attitude brings him down. If he can take accountability for once he would be better off for it
@@KB-ij1co I'm not saying he shouldn't be criticized. He deserves to be criticized because he doesn't try
@abyssalb1aze425 yet you leaned on the excuse hes not a natural center. He has every attribute to be a phenomenal center but he wants the easy road and not have to grow as a player
So what you're saying is - teams are better off without him than with him.
Dubois has severe diva syndrome.
He is a great player when he is on top, he’s shown that. The problem is he doesn’t try at all if he’s not satisfied.
No way I'd want PLD on my team
At 5:26 did you say Pierre coincidence… 😂
Did the type of penalty on Draisaitl matter? It did if the intention was to use it as a cope.
Not a Villanova, unless he smashes guys into the boards, slew foots, accidentally on purpose slashes. That's what Marchand and Wilson did in their pasts. PLD is just disinterested.
PLD is a cancer, why else would both clubs he's played for move him so fast. He doesn't play a 200 ft game, and how many former players are coming to his defense ? NOTHING we hear crickets
PLD has the potential to pop off. He just needs to put in the effort.
1:45 is rarely called in the season, almost never called in the playoffs. You can't "grab onto Draisaitl's face," with the inside of your arm. The "lost control of his stick," is just meaningless words. You can't be called for a high stick for the stick hitting a player laying on the ice.
Given his past, why is the only question I have for the Kings.Dubois has quit on every team he has played on.Imagine given a player with this lack of character 8.5 mil a season on a multi year deal!Just pure insanity.Blake must of been so desperate that he ignored the warning signals is the only thing I can think of.
Can't blame PLD...we all want to get paid.
The blame is squarely put on GMRB & Luc Robitaille!
40pts & over $8mil a year is criminal,at best.
Any team who decides to take PLD on and thinks they’re going to get value in return is gravely mistaken.
PLD was a cancer here in Winnipeg, I was a fan for awhile but in the end the truth became clear. Glad they got rid of him last off season.
Montreal dodged a major bullet.
Drafting Austin Matthews is looking even better. Never mind 69 goals as amazing as it is. Patrik Linne and Jesse Pulijujarvi were rated 2nd and 3rd. Then Blue Jackets GM Kekalainen opted for Dubois over Pulijujarvi. Patrik Linne looked like a great pick but like Dubois was a problem in the dressing room. So Pulijujarvi turned out to be a flub and both Linne and even more so Dubois were locker room cancers (neither were traded away for their lack of skill and talent). But the likes of Matthew Tkechuk , Logan Stanley, Jordan Kyrou, Charlie McAvoy, Jakob Chychrun are looking really good. Love that Thomas Tage and Carter Hart!
This goober has the same contract as Draisaitl lmfao
I don't know if this Lazy player will succeed anywhere, maybe Europe I suppose. Most definitely a misfit toy.
i dont think he could handle the mentality over there 😅😅
Rob Blake’s campaign as GM for the Kings last year reminds me of the Donner Party. There were all the red flags on why not to trade/sign PLD but he avoided them. Now as a consequence, he is cannibalizing the Kings’ chances of making a deep playoff run. This is gonna go down as one of, if not THE worst trades of the 2020s. To add insult to injury, he isn’t even getting bought out! They should have traded for a goalie, SMH.
Apparently the buyout period doesn't start until after the last day of the NHL Playoffs. Which is June 25th this year. So if the Finals goes to Game 7, the Kings won't have the one-third buyout option. Tough luck. (Source: SDPN)
Dude has a bad attitude on every team he plays for. Don’t know the guy but seems that he is just miserable all the time and brings his teammates down with him
You can also see it on the ice. He’s out of place on the rink, his teammates don’t pass to him and he doesn’t go to prime areas. He posts up near the net and just kinda stays there instead of fetching loose pucks. He’s a joke.
If LA keeps him.. next season he better have a better year. First year(after trade) in Winnipeg he wasn't great.. second yr he did show up.
Wonder if LA regret hiring Bergevin as Rob's senior advisor. Bergevin always wanted Dubois even in the draft.
Thank the hockey gods it never happened. PLD Berg and Brisson can stay out of MTL.
Loved pld in 21/22 when he bounced back, then came the rumors of him requesting a trade and it was so frustrating... He stayed for an extra year but the guys seemed disconnected from the team and the fans who really supported him, there was even a notion that he would become a captain before his shananigans... Being a Brazilian fan he reminds me of football players like Neymar, only cares about himself.
im so fucking glad habs didnt sign him cause mofo speaks french
As a Sharks fan, I hope they keep him on the team. Glad to see that he's taken the mantle as worse contract in the league over Vlasic.
Even Montreal knew better than to go after the so called “Francophone” star. 🤣
We got burned with Jonathan Drouin who sit up at home because he has mental issue back in 2021. Could use some extra goals to beat Tampa bay in the SCF and win the cup the guy was at home changing his 5,5 M$ paycheck. While his teammate were giving them all on the ice. The guy with trade in Michael Sergatchev eliminates us instead. No more French -Canadian Messiah in Montréal. it's been 30+ years wasted in Montréal following mediocre team barely making the playoff and a quick elimination. If i still want that i just have to be a leaf fans.
As a jets fan the Dubois trade was awesome
Could easily be coincidence, as you say, or even confounding variable (e.g. teams likely to acquire a guy like Dubois are on their way up). But there are better ways to look at a player's impact on a team, involving looking at a game- or shift-level rather than year-level.
What makes the Dubois situation *even worse* is that Blake 'ruled out' buying out his contract.
So the one quick fix (albeit with a bad aftertaste in the form of $1 million + in buyout penalties for years) is apparently off the table.
Termination of the contract is what LA Kings must do. If he doesn't show any effort, send him down to the AHL. Than he gets suspended with no pay if he doesn't report in.😅
To be fair the kings, jets and jackets have all had no success with or without Doobis.
I don’t believe getting bounced first round after having a good regular season is better than bottom feeding and getting a good pick. In a cap system nothing is worse than mediocrity.
I think Doobis has all tools but got to the big leagues and realized for himself that it’s not worth it to win a championship. He represents a growing life strategy within hockey’s young and gifted, whose priority is not about sacrifice for glory, but to maximize comfort and he’s incentivized to behave this way.
I can’t really blame the guy, he’s essentially the player counterpoint to Bettman’s de-hockeying the league for profit. What people don’t realize is that players are people and behind the scenes there are a pile of champions and would be champions who have life long health problems from playing at the highest level for our entertainment.
With the Kings Doobis hit the home run for the mail it in for profit strategy. He’s young, in great shape, lives in a nice climate as a professional athlete on a team that is irrelevant even if they become a dynasty. Nobody really cares. He gets to live in contrast to his years getting yelled at all the time in Ohio and Winnipeg surrounded by a level of life quality most people would do worse to achieve.
It’s one of the contextual problems of the labour market of the NHL. This strategy was not possible when there was no money to be made playing hockey. We saw peak hockey in the late 80s where the true blue hockey for hockey players played to win and now we have money puck, where players are trained from birth like race horses to make profit.
Toronto is a perfect example of this. For all the drama of zero glory in the media, the organization makes money without winning. The team is made of five overpaid attention seekers and a bunch of plugs. Why? Because the market determines what is valuable, not the culture. There’s no real incentive to win. Everyone is fine even if your team is a joke across the continent. A problem without consequence is indistinguishable from a non-problem.
So, you should make a don’t hate the player, hate the game counterpoint to this video. It’s the less obvious, more revealing topic. It’s centred around the idea of everything being a trade off instead of more and bigger is better. We all love the show, but do we love the show because we love the culture of hockey or do we love the show because we have dreamified it into a distorted reflection of the excessive material fantasies that live in us all?
I don't have "excessive material fantasies", but I agree with the rest of your thoughtful post.
Trade was bad enough, extension was salt in wound.
Great video with very interesting facts. Personally, I don't think Dubois is done. He will turn 26 this summer which is a very young age. His last two seasons with Winnipeg were actually very good. I don't think it's fare to blame Dubois for Winnipeg's lesser good 22-23 season : he got 63 pts in 73 games and + 5. Connor was - 11 and Scheiffele was -16. Also I dont think aging Wheeler was much of a help. I heard in an interviewe last year Marchessault saying (after they beat Winnipeg in the playoffs) that he thought Dubois was there best player. Dubois also had a few excellent performances with CBJ in the playoffs earlier in his career. After a tough year with a new team/new system he will know what to expect next season. And I really think he will be ready and will bounce back!
If I was Rob Blake I’d definitely consider a buyout!
I noticed that stat, it's a good stat to look at but you have to check if there were some other changes.
His impact seems slightly negative.
But then look at Danault, his positive impact is off the chart. He made the LA Kings a bottom team to a playoff team, and the reverse for the Canadians. They pretty much traded places.
Dubois is in a tough spot though, can't really produce much on a fourth line, but he should still be able to have a positive impact or at least neutral and it does not seem to be the case.
Imagine if he had been traded to Montreal. Those fans and that media would have destroyed him after his first 10 games.
It would have been so entertaining too see!!
However, PLD now has the last laugh. He's out of the Winnipeg winters and avoided the demands of playing in Montreal.
He's got a ton of cash, a great suntan, nice cars, a house with a pool and hot girls.
If I had all that why would I put in the effort?
There is a rumor floating around put there that LA and CGY might be interested in a Huberdeau/Dubois trade, with picks and prospects and other peices involved. I honestly would keep Huberdeau as a flames fan. It's a horrible contract, but he is finally gaining some traction in 2nd half of last season, maybe next season will be good for him. I'd rather have the bum contract for a mediocre player that's liked in the room for a bum contract for an underperforming prima donna, especially with alot of young players coming up through the AHL, and being Conroy and crews' first full season behind the bench, I worry that Dubois would be bad for the team culture.
Huberdeau for Gadreau might make a bit more sense but honestly I think we are stuck with Huberdeau and I feel that next season will be a return to form for him (70 point form, not 130 points). I watched the panthers wipe the ice with the senators living in Ottawa for almost 20 years, and I saw flashes of that classic Huberdeau brilliance this season. He never really played with Barkov, other than on PP sometimes, they were usually split up on PP1 and 2.
Huberdeau is an absolutely solid NHL player, damn near a point per game under normal circumstances. His 130 point season, and these past two are hopefully outliers. Getting traded put of the blue, he was obviously butthurt about the trade, he wanted to play his career in Florida. Hopefully he's gotten over himself by this point, because if he can get back to that 65-75 point form, he will still be expensive, but it won't sting as much, and then he has more value if you want to trade him later.
i'm glad Kent Hughes decided price was too high and didn't trade for him.. what an abysmal player. Montreal dodged a bullet!
