And players would sometimes take roughing/fighting penalties if they were well behind. Showed they cared or that they wanted to send a message to the other team. (About as stupid as it gets, I know.) Coaching and team discipline changed a lot somewhere around the year 2000. I suspect this has to do with Olympic teams finally figuring out how to win (I'm thinking Canada especially.) PLD is the problem and I see him asking for a trade out of LA in 2 seasons. PLD's track record: Year 1 he's a slightly below average player. Year 2 he's a slightly above average player. Year 3 he starts out strong then gives up on his team and requests a trade out of the organization. so by the end of the 25/26 season he is gonna stop playing hockey and give lazy shifts and request a trade out of LA by the end of the season

Then Blue Jackets GM Kekalainen opted for Dubois over Pulijujarvi. Patrik Linne looked like a great pick but like Dubois was a problem in the dressing room. @dunsbroccoli2588 Před 22 dny +1

To be fair the kings, jets and jackets have all had no success with or without Doobis.
I don’t believe getting bounced first round after having a good regular season is better than bottom feeding and getting a good pick. In a cap system nothing is worse than mediocrity.
I think Doobis has all tools but got to the big leagues and realized for himself that it’s not worth it to win a championship. He represents a growing life strategy within hockey’s young and gifted, whose priority is not about sacrifice for glory, but to maximize comfort and he’s incentivized to behave this way.
I can’t really blame the guy, he’s essentially the player counterpoint to Bettman’s de-hockeying the league for profit. What people don’t realize is that players are people and behind the scenes there are a pile of champions and would be champions who have life long health problems from playing at the highest level for our entertainment.
With the Kings Doobis hit the home run for the mail it in for profit strategy. He’s young, in great shape, lives in a nice climate as a professional athlete on a team that is irrelevant even if they become a dynasty. Nobody really cares. He gets to live in contrast to his years getting yelled at all the time in Ohio and Winnipeg surrounded by a level of life quality most people would do worse to achieve.
It’s one of the contextual problems of the labour market of the NHL. This strategy was not possible when there was no money to be made playing hockey. We saw peak hockey in the late 80s where the true blue hockey for hockey players played to win and now we have money puck, where players are trained from birth like race horses to make profit.
Toronto is a perfect example of this. For all the drama of zero glory in the media, the organization makes money without winning. The team is made of five overpaid attention seekers and a bunch of plugs. Why? Because the market determines what is valuable, not the culture. There’s no real incentive to win. Everyone is fine even if your team is a joke across the continent. A problem without consequence is indistinguishable from a non-problem.
So, you should make a don’t hate the player, hate the game counterpoint to this video. It’s the less obvious, more revealing topic. It’s centred around the idea of everything being a trade off instead of more and bigger is better. We all love the show, but do we love the show because we love the culture of hockey or do we love the show because we have dreamified it into a distorted reflection of the excessive material fantasies that live in us all?

Great video with very interesting facts. Personally, I don't think Dubois is done. He will turn 26 this summer which is a very young age. His last two seasons with Winnipeg were actually very good. I don't think it's fare to blame Dubois for Winnipeg's lesser good 22-23 season : he got 63 pts in 73 games and + 5. Connor was - 11 and Scheiffele was -16. Also I dont think aging Wheeler was much of a help. I heard in an interviewe last year Marchessault saying (after they beat Winnipeg in the playoffs) that he thought Dubois was there best player. Dubois also had a few excellent performances with CBJ in the playoffs earlier in his career. After a tough year with a new team/new system he will know what to expect next season. And I really think he will be ready and will bounce back!

    His impact seems slightly negative.
But then look at Danault, his positive impact is off the chart. He made the LA Kings a bottom team to a playoff team, and the reverse for the Canadians. They pretty much traded places.
Dubois is in a tough spot though, can't really produce much on a fourth line, but he should still be able to have a positive impact or at least neutral and it does not seem to be the case.

There is a rumor floating around put there that LA and CGY might be interested in a Huberdeau/Dubois trade, with picks and prospects and other peices involved. I honestly would keep Huberdeau as a flames fan. It's a horrible contract, but he is finally gaining some traction in 2nd half of last season, maybe next season will be good for him. I'd rather have the bum contract for a mediocre player that's liked in the room for a bum contract for an underperforming prima donna, especially with alot of young players coming up through the AHL, and being Conroy and crews' first full season behind the bench, I worry that Dubois would be bad for the team culture.
Huberdeau for Gadreau might make a bit more sense but honestly I think we are stuck with Huberdeau and I feel that next season will be a return to form for him (70 point form, not 130 points). I watched the panthers wipe the ice with the senators living in Ottawa for almost 20 years, and I saw flashes of that classic Huberdeau brilliance this season. He never really played with Barkov, other than on PP sometimes, they were usually split up on PP1 and 2.
Huberdeau is an absolutely solid NHL player, damn near a point per game under normal circumstances. His 130 point season, and these past two are hopefully outliers. Getting traded put of the blue, he was obviously butthurt about the trade, he wanted to play his career in Florida. Hopefully he's gotten over himself by this point, because if he can get back to that 65-75 point form, he will still be expensive, but it won't sting as much, and then he has more value if you want to trade him later.
