Also, that contract is ugly and he's gonna want a raise on his next deal. The acquiring team will obviously want him for more than 1 season, but at what price tag?
No doubt marner is an elite player, but he got over paid and he's a winger.
For example kucherov makes 2.5 million less than marner.
I mean marner makes the kind of money reserved for superstar centers like MacKinnon and mcdavid.
This dynamic is an obstacle for marners future.
In an American market a contract extension worth 9-9.5 mil a year makes sense, but no way in hell marner takes that pay cut.

I’d like to see Marner go to Utah for Crouse and Doan. Getting back some size in Crouse and some young scoring in Doan, reuniting Shane with his son. While keeping their core of Keller, Cooley, and Guenther untouched. Considering Utah is coming in next year and would need to make a big splash to make the playoffs in year 1, I think a trade with them would make the most sense. Also they wouldn’t have much attachment to the players.

@@codycassel8996who cares if he's a selke finalist? The main criticism of Marner is his playing style isn't suited for playoff hockey, or at least he can't be a player you build a great playoff team around when he's getting paid 11mill or 1/8th of the teams cap.
On the defensive end, Marner relies on stick checking and his hockey IQ to break up plays and on offense, he relies on creative perimeter play. Being great at stick checking and creating offense from perimeter isn't effective in playoff hockey. Leafs need top 6/9 forwards who are mobile but heavier players that can drive the net. That alone will equate to at least Marners offensive production if paired with cheaper but effective setup guys like Domi. And the other main pull of this kind of trade is the cap dump. They need to make a splash in Goalie and #1 RD UFA markets this summer

Put him on a line with the likes of Nathan MacKinnon and he would shine. But he needs that king of guy to carry the load. Different players can fill different roles roles. The Leafs lack those guys to make the best use of Marner. So they blame him for what he is not instead of realizing what he is. A great player.

Toronto gets a solid mobile defenseman that helps them now plus an underrated backup for Joseph Woll and New Jersey gets a good upgrade to their RW depth in Marner. But ain't no way they are sending Byfield anywhere unless it's some ridiculous return, and I don't think they would even entertain a 1 for 1 swap for Marner. They basically need to get rid of PLD in the process (either to another team or to Toronto) to even consider a player like Marner. The problem is that all the Star Leafs have NTCs. You can speculate this and that, but having an NTC in place will make any trade be a discount trade. Kesler got traded for 2 beans and a hockey bag. What do you think, Leaf fans, that all the other teams are going to give you top dollar for Marner. He's got another year and can walk as a UFA. Let's say he waves it. OK, but I bet he gives the team a small list of teams. That may get the Leafs some extra value. The chances of getting something even close to what Tkachuk got is slim. I think the best bet is to fire the coach and try to make it work with what you have. The problem is that the Leafs( Kyle) traded away too many 1st-round picks in the previous years. They don't have stocked cupboards. They thought we were so close let's trade away the first for a rental. You can't do that over and over and not have it affect your future. On top of that, one of the unfortunate prospects they did get with a first got cancer and died. It's a very tough situation. You're too good to get top ten draft picks, but not good enough to win cups. You got the Tavares contract coming off the books next year. Maybe the best bet is to try to sign Marner and use that 11 million across the lineup instead of on one player. Vancouver brought in a few guys in the off-season, and I bet what they paid out was around 11 million. They got Soucy, Blueger, Pius Suter, Cole. Call me crazy, but I would rather have all these players than Tavares.

As a Wild fan I like the mock trade of Brodin and Rossi for Marner.
Kaprisov and Marner are the same age so this would be capitalizing on the prime of Kaprisov.

    • @JJ............................
      @JJ............................ Před 14 dny

Except Marner isn't a 1C. He primarily played RW. Right now, Ek is their #1 center. I wouldn't mess with the Boldy/Ek/Kaprizov chemistry. Marner would provide more scoring depth, but it would be stupid for them to make their defense weaker by trading their 2nd best d-man. They are better off with Rossi because he has a nose for the net and Marner is scared of physical contact. If they can get Marner without giving up Yurov, Heidt, Ohgren, or Rossi this is a win for the Wild. Spurgeon also makes more sense because his NMC because a 10-team No-trade this summer.

If the Leafs' summer goal is to break up the "core four", they have to move someone, no matter how negotiations go. Some folks seem convinced that Tavares is more trade-able than Marner, butMarner can get a better return for the Leafs, and as you said, he's past his prime and it's all downhill from here for him. The biggest thing needed for a trade partner for Marner though is cap space. There's not many teams out there who have enough space to entertain such a thing, even if it's Tavares who gets moved for some reason.

Leafs add to the deal with that one. Both teams need a shake up! One team is young upcoming trying to make the playoffs with young talent, the other is trying to make a run in the playoffs.

Too many of these mock trades are to teams that I highly doubt Marmer would lift his NTC for: Chicago? no chance, they are at the beginning of their rebuild and Marmer is entering the second half of his career. Minnesota? That team has been mid at best for the last 20 years and that shows no sign of changing, that Florida trade is pure lol juice I don't even wanna comment on it.
I've been building a trade around Marmer/Saros for months now. Other pieces don't matter, this is by far the trade that looks the best on paper.... but I think it's mostly influenced by reports we had a few weeks ago about Saros looking for Sorokin money and the Preds possible not being willing to fork out the cash..... Because in any other case, I don't see Nashville trading Saros; Askarov is close but not there yet. And more recent reports are they are going to sign Saros...
At the end of the day, everyone is waiting for the Leafs and they see them coming. I think Marmer won't be traded because the Leafs have 0 power. The returns they are being offered are probably complete shit, much worse than just keeping him and letting him walk.
