100%. I don't think anyone expected Slaf to become an extremely potent playmaker but what a surprise. His puck possession/retrieval is elite already, his playmaking is really starting to shine, his scoring touch is coming out, good defensively.
Absolutely a unicorn player. He's accomplished all of this at 18/19 years old, he only JUST turned 20years old this week. Tremendous growth from a young, physically gifted player. His potential is completely unknown but it increases every week. I can't imagine what he will be like at 25 years old.
As a side note, this kid is a Slovakian celebrity. The entire country follows this kid around, for many years now, because of hockey. The habs have a huge Slovakian fan base now. Low bar considering what he's doing at the moment. In the last 13 games he has 3 goals, 11 assists for 14 points. When you also consider that Caufield has under 25 goals and Suzuki has under 35 I think it shows that as soon as next year he will be an 80-90 point player. I've watched 100s of hours of this kid. I've been very much loving it. His growth is unmatched. He went from in this season pacing for 27 points in 82 to pacing for 66 in 82. Even if you don't look at his great level of growth physically and defensively. You still see that he's over doubled his offense. One season he had that much growth. Not to mention he's not afraid to get into the gritty area of Hockey. If the Habs have a scrum he's almost always there. Not to mention his backchecking is elite. To have that complete of a game and that level of offense to me screams Matty Tkachuk. When you look at the other 2 options for Montreal in Wright who probably will be like a Danault and Cooley who will be like a Forsberg. I think Montreal for sure chose right here

@andywest4134 Clownish? Shane Wright has been in the AHL for his whole career and the OHL. He's lately shown some strides in the NHL in his last 6 games having 3 goals and 1 assist but that's still at most a #2 two way center which is basically Danaults role in a contender. Forsberg is an elite skilled top line winger who puts up 70-85 points per season with lacking physical and defense. Pretty sure it's safe to say both those guys do fit those profiles.

people have been so hard on him but they're comparing his growth and game to that of players who are no where near his same build and height - of course hes going to play and grow differently, its comparing apples and oranges - and the people who classed him a bust instantly are either dumb, never actually watched a full game of hockey before orrrr were just doing it to ride the hate train. either way, slaf is not a bust in my eyes because hes shown that he can work hard , actively contribute to games when hes needed the most and, most importantly, that he can/will continue to elevate and grow his game

Wasn't surprised to see him have a slower start because of his frame and weight the bigger players can sometimes take longer like we've seen with Brady, Byfield, etc. Your analysis is bang on and seems like people just assume teams see the big frame and just draft players off of that but the teams see the big potential of that player with that frame especially in the playoffs

Soderblom is the typical long and lanky player that looks like he will be quite awkward on the ice, but he has some really NICE stick work, and actually has a nice stride. Anyone who said Slaf didn't have the hockey IQ wasn't paying attention.
The question was never about his IQ, it was always about his stability, balance and his skills in general.
In his rookie season, he didn't seem to be able to stay up, he didn't show much of a shooting ability, he wasn't quick, always behind on the play.
It wasn't a matter of IQ because anyone who was watching could tell the kid was paying attention and his positioning was decent for a rookie. And his work ethic is absolutely unmatched.
Something changed about a month into the season where suddenly he went from out of his depth to dominating. And I don't use that word lightly. Slaf has kept producing at higher and higher paces as the season progressed and his poise, vision, and power have become anchors of his gameplay.

Slav - Suzuki duo is criminally underrated because Montreal is in the Tank and people look at point totals to evaluate talent. Both can make plays, both can score. It's a nightmare to defend against. Both can force the defense to over commit, giving the other more ice. Once Montreal has more forward depth (including a healthy Dach) and some of their offensive defensemen prospect mature and join the team, these two will have even more space to shine. Imo, Montreal and Anaheim are the two trains people need to hop on now !

He's insane. Last year he was falling on the ice all the time. I think he just never had to use his body... But this year, he's impressive. He win a lot of battle over the board, create some space for his team mate and of course, he's very skilled. He have a really good vision, good shot. It was a good pick for montreal. They told they draft the best player to be in 4-5 years. But he's already impressive... He just turn 20 years old... god!

When he started, he was all instinct, at 18 y/o. That's not the case anymore and he got real potential to be a key asset to any team.

And now there it is... He's getting better and better. I'm not saying he's gonna be a SUPERSTAR but a good 1st liner or a great 2nd line potential.

Just like you, I had said from his first season that once he figured out how to use his size and strength, he'd be able to become a modern power-forward. He has good hands too, he was just shy in his first year. Like he was too worried about losing the puck with a fancy dangle. He's hitting his stride and will definitely be a regular 60+ point scorer. Regular all-star? Not sure, but definitely a player the team keeps long term. Will be part of Montreal "core-four" along with Suzuki, Ghule and Caufield.

I remember back in the day. Scotty Bowman was not a big fan of Guy Lafleur. There were also some fans that were impatient with Lafleur. Bowman asked Sam Pollock more than once to trade Lafleur. Pollock kept telling Bowman to be patient and Lafleur was going to be dominant. You see this all the time through the years with different players. Slafkovsky is a different type player than Lafleur. But he's going to be an important cog in the machine. I kind of laugh when I see how big some the guys are on Vegas, Tampa and Florida. In the playoffs size matters.

People have no patience. Just give young players the time to find their way. Sometimes it doesn’t happen. And sometimes a 1st overall doesn’t have to be a hall of famer consistent 90+ point producer to be considered a good 1st overall pick. If you pick up someone who contributes on the top lines with around post per game production and makes your team better then what else could you ask for

I think a lot of folks give him the stink-eye simply because his formative years weren't televised like McJesus, like Chicago Bedard, like the Hughes Trio. You said it best, he went under the radar for a lot of folks; and on top of that, Slovakia is a tiny, landlocked country once part of Czechoslovakia, and the amount of people I see that utterly disregard the rest of the Slavic countries that are NOT Russia is appalling.
Slafkovsky has put in the work, and so what if his rookie season didn't put up god-tier numbers? Kid's still putting in the work, and HE'S 18 YEARS OLD!! These Monday-morning Refs need to sit all the way down and let the kid finish growing before they start trashtalking him.

Speaking as a Slovak first, ice hockey fan 2nd - we take all the haters with Slaf very painfully, and gotta he honest last season was worrying with the injury but Canadians did the right thing not to play him anymore and let him work on things during the summer and put on extra weight (like he needed it lol). If you look at that line, they needed exactly this- size and strength that can play with Nick and CC - and let’s be honest they are very talented but not the most intimidating bunch. I think that line in 1-2 years will be very scary. Slaf being the enforcer, using his size and strength to let the Ds worry about him and let the space for the rest to skate around and score bunch.
