Salam. I would posit that the trend is not only to turn away from religion but the word itself. I have observed of late, the statement made by many that "I'm not religious" or "I don't belong to any religion". The substitute catch all is, "But I'm spiritual". How does this factor in or are we sticking to the script so as not to go off into the weeds?

Another problem with the word religion now is that it is associated with some particular acts of worship . So when someone says I follow the religion Islam, first thing that comes to our mind is, "Oh so he prays 5 times a day." but it's not even in the remotest parts of our brains that Islam is much more than prayers and zakah. It guides us about economy and science and humanity and everything that we need guidance in. So no, Islam is not a religion and yes it is a complete comprehensive way if life -guidance for humanity.

( God Allows Interfaith Marriages And Eat Food From the Christian And Jew And Vice Versa ) Quran 5:5 ''This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture (ie Christian and Jew) is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers (ie Muslim ) and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture (ie Christian and Jew) before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless and he in the Hereafter will be among the losers.''
