Some EU statistics that might be interesting. (Figures not including the UK or Norway, I presume). EU meeting press brief in Brussels, 31 Jan. 2024. Josep Borrell and Ludivine Dedonder.
NB: only 155mm shells were mentioned. But we already know that some ex. Warsaw Pact nations are providing 152mm shells to UA. If those countries are in the EU now I assume those 152mm shells are also included in these numbers.
Borrell: The EU has so far provided €28 billion of military equipment and support to Ukraine since 2022. The commitment by the EU member states for 2024 so far is €21 billion, and that figure will be adjusted upwards because some states are still pending. The EU have trained 40,000 soldiers, and another 20,000 by this summer.
The EU ammo initiative: the member states promised last year to deliver 1 million arty shells per year. Since last March until Jan. 2024, 330,000 shells have been delivered. By March 2024 there will be another 200,000 shells. By the end of 2024 planned deliveries will reach more than 1 million shells. The situation is however changing every day.
The EU arty production capacity has increased by 40% since Feb 2022. Today the production capacity is 1 million shells/year. By the end of 2024 the capacity will be 1,4 million. It will continue to increase because the industry has been mobilised. Procurement contracts have the remaining spare capacity for an estimated volume of 1,5 billions. (I think Borrell meant €1,5 billion, not sure).
Borrell: “We need to move from an emergency mode for support to UA, to a long-term approach”.
Dedonder, in French and autotranslated, in short: The EU will provide short-term and long-term support to UA. €28 billion is not enough and we will certainly not stop there. Belgium will double its UA aid. The EU industry will produce at least 1 million shells. An enormous amount of work has been done here especially by the Breton commissioner (?) who visited lots of countries. Strengthening of the EU defence industry is needed. It's not easy after many years of disarmaments. We need to put everyone back on track. Everyone has understood the issues. There will be a paradigm shift and structural adaptation. She also mentioned rapid deployment capability in the EU.
A journalist asked what the unbalance on the UA battlefield is. Borrell wouldn't give exact numbers presumably due to OPSEC. But he said UA needs more support and he has passed on to the member states that they need to do more, and quicker. The battle is fierce.
Another journalist asked why we are only at 52% of our ammo goal and what lessons can be learnt from this. Borrell: “It's about creating momentum, setting a goal and expanding. When we said 1 million shells the production capacities were not well identified. We managed to increase capacity by 40%. At the end of the year there will be a new goal. I don't know because the process changes every day. But we have gained speed. There is an initial inertia. But when the movement has begun it's the energy which sets up the factory. We have frameworks for joint procurements. It's about creating a positive dynamic. We will reach a ceiling and continue there permanently. Europe must increase its defense capabilities. Today to help UA and tomorrow to help ourselves.”

He is above all, realistic. Proof that he's not politically oriented. He gives it a wide berth because it is outside of his control. He is playing the hand he's dealt, with what he's got to bet. No moaning, whining, complaining. Here's where we are. Here's what we need to do to win. He's given the government an actual goal or task list that is within Ukraine's abilities to focus and provide, and within his estimated abilities to carry out. As a political leader in a nation at war, you wish that all of your cabinet leaders could provide such clarity.

I will not refrain from my original suggestion to the UDF that along with their continued development of higher technological capabilities such as UAV's, UGV's)Ground) etc. they get to know the enemy - rather, use their knowledge of the enemy (their societal siblings over the past several hundred years!) and employ combat 'jujitsu' - that is instead of resisting the momentum of the average Russian, ROLL WITH the momentum, exerting control to increase the momentum until they collapse under the force of the burden of their own weakness. To explain: Ukrainians, being closely integrated with Russia since the 17th century, understand that Russian men will embrace the Russian cultural icon - VODKA- every time this elixir is delivered into their presence. This concept is TOO SIMPLE for the egg-heads, the 'think-tankers' to even comprehend. They are too addicted to expending trillions of dollars in systems, men, munitions and machines, designing strategies around them, maneuvering them in complex expensive and often FAILED operations, firing at each other trying to out-kill the enemy. They are trapped in their own group think illusion that a significant portion of national wealth and blood is the answer to defeating the enemy they are too lazy to understand. If they were on a soccer team against another team of equal ability with ONE exception; the opponent had just consumed a case of Russia's finest potato vodka- EVERYONE knows which team would win and who would lose~! And easily! EVERYONE knows that if the Russian occupier conscripts shivering, poorly fed, poorly led, lonesome for the Mommy-Land were delivered a bottle of Russia's Finest to cuddle up with and dream of home, borscht, their family while Ukrainian heroes safely approach their positions, this war would end quickly with much fewer dead Russians AND Ukrainians!!

Isn’t it sort of ironic that the Z army is being demolished by the ZZ army?
I love when General Zaluzhnyi puts his thoughts in print. I wish the mainstream media journalists were able to read and understand them, rather than picking sensational sentences out of them and repeating them out of context, but we are where we are. At least those of us who CAN read will now have the opportunity and it’s good to have it direct from the top.
I probably will read it for myself, a few times, but it already sounds very much like what I wanted to hear. It’s probably not good enough for the poo tin puppet in America, preventing a vote to clear funding for military aid, but we can hope.
It’s a plan, with a “path to victory “, as requested by Johnston.
Isn’t it time to open the scrapyard gates and allow Ukraine to salvage what they need again?

Didn't think it was that difficult to understand what the generale has written. Its basicly war doesn't realy chnage but each new conflict is differnt and you need to adapt to the new circumstances and not fight the last war. He also put doen the possibilitys and the impossibilitys for ukraine to make this a winning war. Did a list of external problems that need to be adressed. And focussed on the new tech thats introduced in this war and how to use it to let Ukraine win this war. to be honest i thought it was very basic stuff it needed to be written down but it wasn't something brilliant. Ofcourse getting it from writting to reality would take a real master and i ve got this sneaky suspicion he might be one.

The two are facing different fronts. Zaluzhnyi controls what and how goes out at Russians, but Zelensky has to provision the inputs. My suspicion is that this has to do with big money: someone , who pays the supplies, wants to dictate "who plays in the game" (what weapon systems gets used, consequently what strategy is used), even though "the coach" (Zaluzhnyi) knows that it will ruin his team's prospects for winning. So, basically, Zelensky got pressed to enforce those demands, Zaluzhnyi cannot authorize that in good faith, and this is what gives. Zelensky may not be the villain, probably he has no choice to e.g. backpressure on this, because the democratic leaders whom he pleads are held in power or removed by big businesses, e.g. military industries complex.

While I appreciate your optimism, the amounts of ammo needed is colossal. We are talking millions of shells. I listened to a recent press conference with Josep Borrell. In a year I think he said, the EU will be making 1 million shells or something like that. It takes the entire European continents' ammo factories running at full tilt to achieve this. As great as Nafo is, it can't do that. As for buying ammo, it will be very costly. IIRC the 155 mm caliber has gone up in price from €2,000 to €8,000 per shell . And millions of them are needed.

What I took away from this is that Zaluzhnyi's paper was a call to make Ukraine not only able to win this war but the next one. He is looking both short-term and long-term. Without stating it explicitly, he is saying that even if Ukraine "wins" and drives the Russians back to their own borders, there will always be the threat of a repeat conflict and he wants Ukraine to be prepared for that long-term situation. I think he is right. Even after Ukraine is in NATO (hopefully), it will always be at risk of receiving the first strike from Russia and whether Putin is in charge or not, that risk will remain. It is a sobering assessment, but realistic IMO. Being dependent on other countries to provide materials and systems is not going to cut it in the long-term although essential in the short-term. It is an unfortunate reality that the only thing one can trust Russia to do is push its borders as far as others will allow them. Maybe in another generation this mentality will recede, but in the meantime, that is how he sees it. Incidentally, his message is exactly what Putin needs to hear, that his assumptions about a weakened neighbor - that all he needs to do is maintain steady pressure and resistance will collapse - is flat wrong.
If Russia departs and signs a peace treaty does anyone think Russia will honor it? Hitler was in no small part motivated by his belief (a belief shared by many of his countrymen) that Germany had given up in WWI too quickly and needed a re-do. Putin feels the same way about the collapse of the Soviet Union, a belief many of his supporters share. Losing a border war is not going to change his mind about that.

But such wars are decided usually not on the battlefield but more on the economical front. If you try to look a bit behind the propaganda curtain you can see that the Russian economy is in a devastating situation and only works with the savings of the last 10 years Putin made for this war. But this savings will not last very long.

The position of a Chief of General Staff per se is a political one as the person installed is the interface between political decision making and military decision making. Politicians usually have no clue at all about military thinking and operation, about military needs and the need to have a military at all.
Western democratic politicians usually have a strategic horizon spanning one election cycle, military must think and act over decades.
In wartime, this interface is even more relevant, as politics tend to rather give in in order to not sacrifice more lifes and with that playing in the hands of the aggressor, while military is putting lifes at risk to repel the aggressor and with that preserving the attacked society from being overthrown.
The military mission can only succeed, if both elements understand this challenge and act in unison. So far we have seen thus unified action in UA and that's a good sign, that the above mentioned interface is working.

Hello Georgijs. I think this guy is the right man for the job. A person with vision is worth countless yes men. Drone warfare pioneered at the level Ukraine has done has changed warfare forever. Back in the old west days in the US an inventor named Sam Colt made a hand gun that left the standard of one shot then reload behind and created the revolver. It held five cartridges, meaning five chances to win against a gunslinger or professional hired gun. The nickname given that gun was the Great Equalizer.
I think that is exactly where we are with the introduction of Drones that have become more sophisticated every day. Lets not forget that a single Drone used in an attack in Yemen and the result of that attack and in the wrong hands how much power it can giver to an idiot. However in the hands of professionals such as the Ukrainian military they are an assume destructive force that will in the end be principle to the Ukrainian victory in my opinion. Everyone else is playing catch up and still others are investing billions in Drone programs. Nevertheless Ukraine has two huge things going for it right out of the gate. First Ukraine is the the pioneers in field working these weapons, so they know what is practical and they know what works and what doesn't and they know what they wish the Drone could do. The second thing is command is not about to let that brain trust go to waste. The Ukrainian officer's corp has demonstrated they want to hear from their people in the field and want them involved in every step of crafting these Drone weapons and surveillance systems so they will be the best tools that lands in a soldiers hands on the battlefield. I have faith in the Ukrainian military, and those who lead it and in every soldier in it. Victory is coming for Ukraine of this I'm certain. This is the time to push small thinkers aside and let that undefinable Ukrainian creative force loose with all of the monetary support they need. Slava Ukrayini!

He realized quickly enough about the use of unmanned apparatus, where others were still going with tanks and so on. I don’t think he and Zelensky cannot walk through the same door. There may be irregularities, but in the end you can see them as two brothers fighting the same war.
I rather point a finger to our western press and opinion makers, that they have very little knowledge of what is happening on the field, but they like to be called ‘experts’

There was a moment in history when the professional military class recognized that gunpowder had irrevocably changed the nature of warfare forever. It would have been very similar to this moment with unmanned vehicles. Those who understood and were able to would manufacture gunpowder. They would develop various ways of tactically deploying gunpowder based on real-world experience in combat. The logistics would evolve to make sure gunpowder was available on the battlefield when and where it was needed. And the training of personnel in not only the actual use of gunpowder but also the evolution of both offensive and defensive tactical doctrine that reflected the new reality on the battlefield. in the long run, unmanned vehicles may very well end up having the same magnitude impact on warfare as gunpowder did once upon a time.

Zaluzhny is a military man - a specialist and an expert. Ahead of his time in his country, and even since the experience he has gained in this conflict in the world, this man is an outsized asset to Ukraine and the west. Rumour has it that Zelensky sees him as a political rival and wants to eliminate that threat. Frankly I do not buy that. Zaluzhny is a military man through and through. Every word he says is about military capabililty without even the smallest hint of any political aspect. After this conflict he has a future as one of the all time great military commanders. Politics is not his interest and not his strength, and he knows that. If Zelensky is truely afraid of that he is not the political giant he is presented as.
