    Hi Chris, came across this as a fairly new user of Logos with a huge library getting ready to start in master's work that might be multidimensional-- some practical/counseling, some theology, etc. I love research but have organizational issues. Someone recommended Zettelkasten Method as she is working on her PhD. I am not super tech oriented. Do you think I could manage lots of connections between material/ideas within Logos for longer term research? Does it have a way to work with bringing in articles? She also mentioned Zotero. She helped me identify that I have a research type personality that sees a lot of connections... but the issue is I also see A LOT of connections and sometimes have trouble categorizing information or being fearful I won't be able to remember where it is to retrieve it. My desktop both physical and computer is a mess. TIA for any input.

    • @chrisjwilson
      @chrisjwilson Před dnem

      Logos isn't really designed for Zettlekasten but here's the best way I can think of to do it. You make notes following the zettlekasten method in your various note books. You can use the numbering system, give tags, etc. You can have literature notes where you highlight your resources and you can have fleeting notes which are your own thoughts. You can also import highlights from other resources manually (maybe use zotero and then copy and paste your highlights/note). To do an index, you use the sermon builder feature and share your notes to the relevant index/sermon. That would allow you to group them together. It's not perfect but it would get yout 90% of the way there. Hope this helps.

    Awesome video, I've started using Obsidian a few weeks ago and consciously stopped importing my notes from Notion and Evernote because I was confused as to which was the best way to organize them. So many videos on CZcams about Zettelkasten, PARA, MOCs, but I've struggled to find a concise enough video explaining in detail when to use links, tags and folders. I'm very grateful you made this video as it now allows me to confidently import thousands of notes taken from years of work and reading, and knowing that I won't have to waste days and weeks of my life trying to re-organize notes because I started making connections between notes the wrong way (using tags instead of links because I saw a video showing claiming it was superior). I think that this tool is very subjective, and can be adapted to fit different personalities and workflows, but the learning curve is quite high and most of the content requires understanding a lot of concepts before knowing which system of organization works for you. Thanks for your help, and keep up the great work!

    • @chrisjwilson
      @chrisjwilson Před 13 dny

      I'm so glad you found it useful and I think you are absolutely right: this tool is subjective. You can use it in a totally different way to me and maybe you want to use mostly links, fine. Or maybe you want to only use tags, also fine. I think there are some principles that can make one better for certain functions than another, but that doesn't mean you have to go down that root. I suspect that's also why you've found the learning curve high... I wonder what the simplest first system for a total beginner could be which they could then adapt into any other system they wanted... I'll have a think and see if I can come up with something.

    • @cedric_ly
      @cedric_ly Před 12 dny

      @@chrisjwilson If you manage to come up with a simple system for total beginners to take notes very simply, with high adaptability when they'll figure out their preferred organization style, you'd solve a big problem in this niche I think. I have a few friends who also know of Obsidian and have shared the same struggles, and I have yet to find a resource online addressing this issue once and for all. Most CZcamsrs show their particular folder or linking style, but it's hard to find someone who says "If you're like this, then you should probably start with this system". I guess that's the cost of high personalization of the tool: we get easily confused in the beginning, but once we get the hang of it, we can unlock more of its power.

    • @chrisjwilson
      @chrisjwilson Před 2 měsíci

      I can understand your discomfort especially with a new version of Logos due and their current changes. It's part of what I love about Obsidian's approach especially as you can support via additional services (sync/publish) and even if they go away, it's just text files. I know some people do have an additional vault and some even seem to link across vaults (though I'm not 100% certain exactly what they are doing there. Perhaps it's a marioska situation where you can open a limited vault or the larger vault. Or maybe it's just putting all the notes into a certain folder which is what I do. Or perhaps it's something else entirely). To me, it makes sense to keep it all together for linking notes. That's me, and there may be a different approach that works better. For example, one person I've come across doesn't keep the Bible in their vault, they just link to the Blue Letter Bible website!

      I'd say, don't move away from folders! Start using links alongside folders and see what works for you. Maybe you use more folders than other PKM people, that's fine. Maybe you drop them completely eventually, that's fine too. You don't have to go all in straight away (or ever!)

    how do I do this with learning Greek? Fully mobile? S Pen capable?

  • @ToddParker
    @ToddParker Před 3 měsíci

    What I really want is an Android equivalent to Pencil Bible. Logos puts their tech behind a massive paywall that only mega Church pastors can afford because of Church budgets. I do not want a pdf equivalent because it is limited given my desire to continue to learn the original languages. Thoughts?

    • @chrisjwilson
      @chrisjwilson Před 2 měsíci

      I've heard of the pencil bible but not checked it out. I thought they were working on an android version though but I see they haven't. What's the limits of a PDF bible? There is a greek PDF version you can get (not hebrew I'll admit). I think the only way to get something like that would be to comission an android developer yourself! I'll add that I'm not a mega church pastor and I've built up my logos collection over time. I picked up a free previous generation fundamentals pack, then added a legacy library with a load of good commentaries, then a few more here and now I add a package when it's discounted or when there's a book I need. It's still not cheap and I could get kindle versions of most commentaries for cheaper but the value for me is high (but that may not be the case for every Christian).

    • @ToddParker
      @ToddParker Před 2 měsíci

      @chrisjwilson last I checked, logos had stylus support in a new notes engine in their bronze package; about a $500 buy in. Cost prohibitive for a lot of people. I use pdf Bible journal in a notes app just so my stylus can be effective. In my opinion developers are completely missing it. The notes app is fine, but limited from a perspective of how a proper Bible app ties everything together. Part of the power of a system like logos is how everything gets hyperlinked together. I am glad you believe you have found a way to make their system work for you, I simply think they are over priced to the point of alienating a lot of people who could benefit from their service.

    The biggest advantage of a digital Bible vs a paper Bible is I carry around my iPad and it has ALL my resources and access to the entire internet of resources within an easily carried unit. No bulky resource books. No stuffed pencil bag. The biggest advantage of a digital Bible vs an E-BOOK BIBLE is the ability to add pages, write directly on the page, and add decorations if you like to Bible "journal". I solved the problem of finding a version by making my own. Yes, it took me a while and, in truth, I’m still tweaking it, but it is serving my needs. I can do portrait, landscape, landscape with 2 pages so I can read on one side and make notes on the other. I can have a reference resource on one side and the Bible on the other.

      I grew up with the NIV and I became too familiar with it but since I've spent the last few years jumping between translations, I appreciate its decisions a lot more. I also like the NLT which I am very surprised by!

    • @allankempson6951
      @allankempson6951 Před 4 měsíci

      I found the NLT a bit too dynamic for me, but the NIV has a good balance between formal and dynamic equivalence in my opinion, similar to the CSB. My favourite translations are the ones that are in between formal and dynamic equivalence, and so far the NIV is the best for me.

    • @chrisjwilson
      @chrisjwilson Před 4 měsíci

      I can definitely understand that and i still find the NLT to be a bit too imposing at times, but there are times I find they’ve chosen an idiom rather than just a word for word switch and it does add something.

    • @allankempson6951
      @allankempson6951 Před 4 měsíci

      I can understand that, I always think its good to try a variety of translations anyway. Another reason why I prefer the NIV is because it can appeal more to an international audience at times then the NLT, the NLT sometimes seems to lean towards US readers. For example in Matthew chapter 18 in the parable of the unmerciful servant the NLT uses dollars, but the NIV says bags of gold and silver coins.

    • @chrisjwilson
      @chrisjwilson Před 2 měsíci

      It sounds like a great idea for a video. I think the main mistake people make is assuming that they can just drag and drop/create a new note with in-line blocks and that's enough. It can happen, but it's rare and you risk self-plagerising too. Instead, 1. make a note for your outline and link your atomic notes there. (You can use this to rearrange etc). 2. Write out your essay using your outline. You can copy bits/quotes etc from your notes, and you can make individual notes for certain sections (the intro/conclusion/each subsection) which can help to move things around but these shouldn't be "atomic" notes as they are your final form. 3. Once made, I keep it in my vault as a final product which can help for referencing. Hope that helps, I'd love to know any insights you have too. Always keen to learn.

    Hi Chris, just came across your channel. I've been looking for something like this. I was starting to use Good Notes, and it's okay, but I have to "create my own Bible," so to speak, in order to put scripture in and then put my notes across from the verse(s) I want the note to be about. I told my husband I am struggling with finding something that would allow me to write as much as I want in a note but still attach it to a specific section of scripture/verses, etc. I just recently got an iPad and was hoping to use it there, but I think you mentioned that it's not available for mobile devices. I need to learn how to use Obsidian more to see if it really is going to work for what I'm looking to do. I have considered Logos, but it's so complicated, and I feel like I have to take a class just to learn the program. I do love all the resources that I use, but the notes section is lacking, in my opinion. I did see another video on Canvas Candy. Do you recommend it? Are there any other things you would recommend getting for Obsidian? I also prefer digital, but I would like the ability to print out everything and have a hard copy, just in case something happens with technology. Are you able to do this in Obsidian? Thank you so much for your videos, your patience, and your willingness to help.

    I would have thought that linking all the verses in between was useless unless your Bible is formatted as each verse is its own note. If the Bible is set up as each chapter is its own file (as you have it), then as long as you link the starting and end verse, you won’t loose out on the relevance of the in between verses. Just check your back links while reading the passage

    Christians struggle to read The Holy Bible at an atheist’s pace. It’s too moving. We slow done. Well done, thanks for sharing

    Just ran across this old video while searching for an alternative to using Evernote for my bible study notes. Wondering if Obsidian can link to and from external online resources like Blue Letter Bible. So, instead of populating the bible text in Obsidian, I'd be interested in setting up links to and from the URLs for the verse(s) in Blue Letter Bible. Would this be possible with Obsidian?

      Sorry for the late reply. Yes, you could do that. You'd just include a link (via markdown) and point to something like blue letter bible. The advantage of having a bible in your obsidian system is that you can see what notes you've made as you read the Bible, or find multiple links to the same note. You could still do that with an external Bible but it would be trickier.

    You can select a Bible verse on Logos or a text from a book, then go to the tree dots on the top right. Once the tab is open, you scroll down then you will see several options to copy that text: URL, HTML, L4, etc. If you choose the URL or L4, you can then go and type something on obsidian, select that texto, then press cmd+k, and paste the url. Then you have the option to open that link in Logos.

    You touched on this a tad here 2:56 but here is another option for consideration. You can always link to one verse but then give the link itself an alias so that you can link to the specific verse but see the context in your link. For example ([[Rom-12#v2|Romans 12:1-2]]) will just show up as (Romans 12:1) but when you click on the passage it will take you to verse two in your vault. Like you said, there is no easy and perfected way with this system quite yet. For me, these aliases have helped me make a point in teaching. For example, I can say "Paul talks about being transformed in Romans 12:1-2. Notice specifically verse 2..." etc but this is another possible solution that has worked for me so far.

    Obsidian is nowhere close to Logos. Been using Logos even before it became Logos. Yes it is expensive if you want everything in it. If you haven’t tried Logos, you should. They have payment plans to. Start small.

    Thanks for the comparison video. Logos Bible is good for detailed and specific research. But for a general overview, I think Obsidian is better. It would be wise to keep it simple and summarized so you don't get tired. In my case, I also use zotaro (PDF MANAGE PROG) in parallel. This's how I use books that isn't on Logos

      Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean by "it would be wise to keep it simple and summarized so you don't get tired." I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to.
