  • Today I'm fleshing out the book of the bible MOC or hub note that I started in the last video. In this example I look at 1 John and show my process of dropping in idea, summarising, and linking notes together. If you make digital bible notes or Bible Knowledge management and use a tool like Obsidian, Roam or Craft, this will be useful for you.

Hi Chris. You have done great work! I'm happy to see a techie guy who is also a Christian and using technology i.e., Obsidian with the study of God's Word. Your videos are a big help in my study and preparation for Bible Studies (personal and for small groups) and for teaching/preaching. Blessings to you, brother.

Thank you so much Benji. I merely wanted to share how it’s helped me and hoped some one else would find it useful too. Let me know if you have any particular struggles, I can provide answers for everything but maybe I can certainly try!

There are 4 questions I like to answer when studying scripture.
    1. What is the backstory?
    2. What did the scripture mean to the original audience?
    3. What does it mean to me?
    4. How can I interpret it for today’s world?

When you say interpret, I’m I right that you mean this to include how it affects your actions? The word interpret makes me thing of “translate” or “understand”. I’d normally think of application as a final step, but I’m somewhat taken by the idea of “interpreting” instead. I remember reading an article about the differences between British and Italian soccer players. British players “played” and were judged on their performance. Italian players were evaluated on how well they “interpreted their roles”, like actors. Maybe that’s a good metaphor for the Christian life?

@@chrisjwilson love the comparison between British and Italian players. Have to use that sometime in my writing or podcast (if I can ever to where I am happy with content and presentation).
Greatly appreciate your CZcams channel. Especially those on Obsidian. There is so much I have found and filed that I can not find when I needed it. So right now am reconstructing files with Obsidian and Zotero.

What markdown syntax allowed you to do a preview of the verses you were linking to? (Around 20:23)

You just need to place a ! before you open the square bracket. So ![NAME OF NOTE/VERSE] Hope that helps. I can see it's not the most visible.

Is there a reason you wouldn't do this using the Logos Notes feature. It is convenient to link notes to references in specific resources and there is a way to link your own notes (even if clunky).

    • @chrisjwilson

There’s two reasons. 1) I started building this system in obsidian (actually notion) and didn’t realise I could do this sort of linked notes in logos. (I’m fact I’m not sure how I can link to my own notes but I’ll investigate that).
      2) I have no bible notes in my system as well. I have notes on my day job and random books. BUT there can be connections that emerge between theses sources.
Having said both of those points, I have wondered about moving to use logos more/exclusively so I might do that in the future.
Is that what you are using?

@@chrisjwilson I am using Logos notes. I can imagine if I had lots of non-bible notes I would hesitate, especially as they would be vulnerable to software updates. I did start with obsidian but didn't like switching between different apps. The set-up was much easier: open a new note and start. If you want to know how to link notes, search for "How to link a note to another note?" in the Logos notes forum.
It does have it's downsides. Being in Logos it's not the fastest way to make notes. Also on mobile, while links within existing notes work, I can't make linked notes with the app. I have to wait until I have desktop access to add them.
