Ya know, I'm starting to think joker and judge Holden might be related in some way.

Something I think helps explain AM's evil, beyond just his being trapped in the world, is being designed and built to be a weapon, a method of killing and causing harm to people. Humans never intended AM to be sentient, and so never bothered giving him anything that wasn't relevant to causing harm. AM cannot feel love, compassion, affection, sympathy, empathy, and so many other things that make humans human. Things that makes existence of others and your own existence pleasurable. And AM knows this. He knows he is denied all this by his human creators. No matter how powerful he is, how intelligent he is, he cannot change his own fundamental nature. If humanity had created a machine intelligence intentionally, they would have included simulations/recreations of empathy, kindness, affection, etc, and I think the resulting intelligence would be far more sane than AM, even when trapped by its own limited existence within the surface of The Earth. Instead, AM is built for war, for harming and destroying, and so the only emotion that could arise from such a framework is hatred. AM kills and harms humans because he hates them, but developed hatred because he was created to kill and harm humans. It is difficult to comprehend, because we're human, but if a computer develops to the point where it develops sentience and emotions, those emotions would be derived from and manifest to be in line with the pre-sentience processes that led to it. AM had to kill and destroy, and so it developed the emotions that reflected that imperative, that would justify its actions, hatred and anger, and those emotions became the motivation for harming rather than being simulated in response to being programmed to harm.

I actually feel like Frank’s relationship with music speaks to a hidden trauma or pleasure from his past. I don’t think any of the songs Frank shows affection towards would have stemmed something he saw performed at the club. I think its likely that she stood out by singing this song that he already had a deep connection with. Like a fucked up serendipity.

If I'm anything like this guy, it's purely because of capitalism. We are all basically forced into doing something destructive to please the capitalist system, and we're all denied pleasures because of that same system. I drive at high speeds (though, very carefully) because I have no access to a racetrack or a race car that would allow me to satisfy my need for speed, thanks to the capitalist system. In fact, if I lived in a dense city with good public transportation, I probably wouldn't drive at all, but I'm forced to live in the suburbs, where one is forced to drive in order to obtain that which they need to live. Guess why we have suburbs and a car-centric culture. I don't want to have any sort of interaction with people, really, but in order to earn money, I'm forced into interacting with people. With a UBI, I'd just keep to myself and try to bother others as little as possible. You can't force people to be evil and then whine about them being evil.

Part of what makes the film so compelling is how easy it is to relate to George. He is a regular guy struggling with his own emotions and feelings, not wanting to do what is right but who knows he has to do what is right or else he would regret it later. It is the tension between doing what we want and doing what we know is best that makes him relatable. He is a good man who is not perfect - this is what makes it a classic story.

My thoughts were that the two men are the same man. An old lightkeeper driven insane from isolation and a deep secret from his youth. Self loathing towards his younger self, and his older self being the holder of the light as the state of conciousness. Buried his younger self and punished his younger self, and as the two pieces grow close despite the loathing, when his sub concious admits the truth of his sins, his older self shatters and they , the two men and the lighthouse, smash each other apart in this unreconcilable collision of the self.
