So scary how this is STILL SO TRUE.
To share the same bed with someone you make children with, while at the same killing her family slowly one by one for that money is disgusting. The stupid American Government didn't help, thinking they were not competent enough to handle their own money. Hale was definitely heinous, Ernest came across to me as a low IQ imbecile, but still smart enough to know it was wrong and kept enabling Hale.
Although evil, he was under the duress of Hale whom he know would've had him killed if he went against him. Where Hale is an S-tier, Ernest was probably A or B.

@@llamasarus1Ernest's big problem isn't more that he's evil. He's merely weak-willed, cowardly, greedy, and stupid. None of it excuses his actions but he's a lot more complicated than simply being evil.
@@HBarnill right, Hale was more evil but Ernest was a blank slate whom Hale molded to do his exploitative deeds.
To be fair, Hale's gang was brought down by the FBI, if anything the Osage murders was the crowning achievement of the FBI while it was under J Edgar Hoover, Founder of the FBI.
Hale is the most heinous character in this plot. But I'd argue Ernest is worse because he knows his uncle is planning something devious, yet feigns ignorance and enables Hale.
Like Janis Ian from Mean Girls said: There are two kinds of evil people. People who do evil stuff, and people who see evil stuff being done and don't try to stop it.
If it makes you feel any better, James, Ernest and Mollie's son, received his father's ashes - and Ernest had asked for them to be placed in a certain area. James apparently threw the whole urn off a bridge into a creek.
Yeah! Hale is a monster who has always been out for enhancing the $ amount of net worth for himself and the powers that be whom Hale is in kahoots with. This monstrous character trait is coached into Ernest who ends up becoming more of an active trampler of truth by ways of terrorism and cultural invasion.
The length of the movie and the leisurely pace allows the viewer time to change opinions of the characters as the characters change themselves. For me in the theatre, I was constantly adjusting - “Is this guy bad? How bad?” Almost all of the white characters have to weigh their conscience vs “that’s a lot of money.” Some don’t have much of a problem with it. There are others who die. I think Ernest actually lies to himself.
Not even enabling, but he just didn’t care. Even as he ends up confessing, it really feels more like he’s out for himself.
One of the most disturbing cinematic moments is when, after the house bombing happened, Bill Smith is seen alive but severely maimed and bloodied, screaming, and begging to be mercy killed. The real story I heard was that he was kept alive on morphine for 4 days before he actually died.
That’s accurate. He died days later in hospital. More disturbing to me is that their servant Nellie was blown to pieces but hardly mentioned in the reports. For that matter, Lily Gladstone has revealed that she broke down while researching the court documents of that case when she noticed it only mentioned Bill Smith with no mention of Rita.
And he was really Osage

As someone who lives in Oklahoma, this book proved to be massively informative while also enraging. The audacity of William Hale to pretend to be their friend while being the one who was fucking them over. That's pure evil if I've ever seen it.
American pragmatism at it's finest.
I think he was delusional enough to truly believe he was their friend. Dissociation is strong. Case in point: my ancestors were slave owners. My grandmother (b. 1901) was the granddaughter of the last one to own slaves; she literally probably sat on his knee as a child. She told me (truly believing what she was saying) that “our people” stayed after Emancipation because “we” had treated them so well. Even as a 16 year old I could smell the BS and critically think about what few options the freed people would have had for survival otherwise and as I’ve grown up and studied it’s clear that the entire infrastructure was quickly set up following the Civil War to remove as many alternatives to servitude and independence as possible.
It’s frighteningly easy to conveniently paint a narrative that flies in the face of facts.

As a fellow Okie, I like to say this place is a horrifying microcosm of all of the worst aspects of America. This book is part of why I've drawn that conclusion.

The problem is not only the extremely reduced runtime for the story it tries to tell, but also how it depicted Napoleon as an unlikable creep, something not even the four-hour cut will fix. Without a doubt, the best depiction of Napoleon's whole career is the 2002 miniseries starring John Malkovich and Gerard Depardieu

This movie was perfection. From the casting to the story. My great grandma was part of one of the many murdered Osage people. Though watching it was hard. I am glad the story was told because it is still going on with missing and murdered indigenous women.

I live in Creek County and know descendants of Henry Roan (Roanhorse) so I tried to imagine it’s being my grandfather being treated all those ways. I cannot imagine the sadness, anger (largely internalized), sense of futility as MMIW/MMIP continues to this day, sense of relief for the telling, and sense of pride for the survival and resiliency and even thriving of a culture and language. My deep hope is that we’re all as an integrated community now turning the corner closer to appreciation and mutual respect and justice. A girl can hope…
One of the best pieces of advice I've heard when learning history is to put yourself in the perspective of the villainous, the evil, the perpetrators. Don't assume you'd be the outstanding heroic figure. It's much more likely that you're the villain. (Even if that means you're the good guy who stands by silently, doing nothing.) If you can't look at it like that, you'll never be able to prevent it when the situation arises.

All humanity is more alike to one another than they are apart.
That's a good thing, it means we are all capable of the same kindness and empathy
And also terrible, we are all capable of the same evil and violence
You make a great point; throughout the course of the film I badly wanted to believe that I would have been a stand up human and somehow stood up for what is right and just. Realistically, I'm not so sure that would have been the case, given the different types of programming we're all under.
In many cases, I think that people may not necessarily contribute to such atrocities directly, but will most likely just remain quiet so that they can stay out of the line of fire.

I read the book in college for an assignment and it was one of the hardest reads and analysis I’ve had to go through. I’ve watched confessionals from Osage tribesmen and other Natives that had to go through this and it’s heartbreaking. You can see some of them just disassociate as their words trail off and their mind is taken back to that time. It’s so sad
The relationship between Hale and Ernest is such a great illustration of the banality of evil.
The movie didn't feel like 3 hours long. I was so emotionally invested in the film, and was left dismayed after it ended, but in a good way. Everyone needs to see this movie.
I know it sounds weird. But I know why the ending might seem abrupt and some people have croqueted the movie for it.
Alot of things have changed.. but alot has stayed the same. There are still issues with keeping Native kids in Highschool and going forward. Mental health is weird. The Rez is slowly changing but still has its ghosts. And there is encouragement over outside marriages still due to the fear of overlapping native genes. And the fear of us going off the deep end due to the deaths of Jerry Shaw, Bill Joseph Hickey, Janet Price, Mae and Sonny, and so many others. Either old, sickly, or addicted.
I clicked on this expecting a movie video but got an insanely respectful, informative, fascinating history lesson

You're setting yourself up for dissappointment. People are capable of evil and virtue in equal measure. There have been societies that experienced centuries of true peace and freedom. There have been societies that never knew either.
What we reap is based upon the organization of our societies, and the values we practice. How we consider the stranger, and the non-conformist.
It's a choice. To be evil, or to notbe evil, is a choice we make every day.
Yeah but this particular case is part of a singular footprint of devilry and demonic evil malevolence.

@@DreamersOfReality It's not always a choice. Lots of people with personality disorders who literally can't do good things because they're incapable of true empathy/introspection. No excuse, just an explanation. Labeling humans as "evil" ignores the complexities of being human.
Come And See will literally change you forever. See it first, then go read into it and find out that the reason these people in the film are so good at the parts they play isn't because they're incredible actors. It's because they actually SURVIVED the events portrayed in the film. I just know I'll never be the same after seeing that. Salo, too. Salo, Or, 120 Days of Sodom by Pasolini. That'll mess you up real bad too. They ended the director because he made it...
It's one of the few films that deserves to be called a tour-de-force.

It's a good movie. Good acting. But it's a strange story because the main character, DiCaprio, is a villain and you want him to fail. Which he eventually does.
What a shame that this amazing movie completely bombed at the box office, probably because its excessive length scared away potential viewers. It's sad and ridiculous that the duration of a movie can diminish the reputation it can get. As Sergio Leone said:
"A movie is only "long" if it bores you"

I agree however at the same time I am pretty shocked that the film had a $200 million dollar budget. That's a budget that would usually go to a cgi action film with lots of special effects but I wonder why this film needed that same amount when it is very practical driven

These movies are making money, just not breaking even. 200 million dollars for this movie was unnecissary. It made 159 million, which is ALOT of money, but its a bomb because the movie costed so much to make. People are going to the movies, theyre bombing from costing to much to make. Look at Godzilla. It was made with a budget of 15 million, and it made 42 million world wide. Most horror movies are made with small budgets too and make tons of money. Its all about the cost.

I wish you'd cover HBO's "Rome" which was unfortunately cancelled after 2 seasons when it was supposed to go for 5 as an entire video, not a character alone. While the characters don't come off as evil on first glance; when you realize Titus Pullo, the guy who killed a man just for liking the same woman as he did with his bare hands, raped women as spoils of war during the Gallic wars (or at least is likely to have done so as Vorenus hinted), bit a dude's tongue off and kept him in a small cage for months if not years around to "keep people from being dishonest", and assisted in the 2nd Triumvirate's massive bloodbath that was the proscriptions and killed Cicero with no mercy is probably the most likeable dude in the entire show, you realize just how monstrous the other characters really are.
Also, maybe an episode on Biff Tannen and his family? I know, he's not that interesting of a villain but damn he's so iconic.

I purchased the film today and viewed it before finding this video. As a result, I cried not from being saddened per se, but out of anger! Scorcerse proved his brilliance with this masterpiece. I was mystified by Molly's dedication to her husband despite the fact he was poisoning her with tainted insulin injections that made my blood boil. Yet, we the audience were privy to facts unknown to her. Only too late did she realize the possibility of his involvement. However, her sweet nature made it too hard to wrap her mind around his culpability. I dreaded the possibility she was dead before the agent of the FBI seized her to be hospitalized and I was surprised she survived. She lost one of her daughters due to this reign of terror and as far as I'm concerned, everyone involved should hang. However, they didn't. They were entitled!
They say life itself causes one to become hardened with age. Yet, it's the opposite with me. In my youth, these events seemed horrid but could be easily forgotten due to my short attention span and commitments. Yet, today after many decades of aging, news reports of evil deeds make me cringe! The ironic aspect is that I love people but I detest mankind for its evil tendencies. And every time I hear of a terrible crime, especially on children, a small portion of me dies. We were sick then as we are now and it's getting worse for our children and their future. The sad fact is, that too many people believe we are witnessing progress when in fact we are not. Only when certain artists, poets, storytellers, songwriters, and craftsmen remind us to "feel and aspire" to the true human potential, as Mr. Scorcerse aptly demonstrated, we can sense the true difference between right and wrong and how we deviate from it.
All I can say while I take this in and think about this episode is outstanding job explaining and thank you.

I’m liking your full length videos that analyzes the evil of multiple characters in a work, Vile Eye. Might I recommend you do one on Road to Perdition (2002)? Many characters in that movie are on the dark side, but very complex, despite, or perhaps, because of that.

Thank you for your dedication to this journey Mr. Vile. When I heard that this is episode 160, i was stunned. Your work and research is very much appreciated. The current political climate needs objective truth that you are providing.
I like how Ernest is shown to love his wife somewhat and at times be completely horrified at the bloodshed caused by Hale's plot, but he still knowingly orchestrates and goes along with it anyway because he is still a greedy bastard who loves money more than anything else in the world, even his wife.

It is insane that so many were able to get away with this! Makes you wonder how much more has gone on and continues to go on without our knowledge.

The big problem for me after watching the movie was Mollie, or at least the representation it gave her, specifically that she could not discern that her husband and his uncle had nefarious intentions towards her family and her people. It's like she had no suspicions, was blinded by "love" until it was laid out for her. She couldn't have been that dense, emotionally, spiritually, or otherwise.

First would like to say amazing video, one of the best you've ever made & given it was real events, you showed a lot of respect. Second, have you ever seen the show version of Fargo? I think you'd love it, it has some all time phenomenal villians in each season as it is an anthology show. Some are as evil as it gets, others are more all over the place & somewhat redeemable. Malvo (S1), Mike & Hanzee (S2), Varga (S3), and Roy (S5) would all lead to fantastic videos on their own imo
I would like to suggest a villain: Angela, from Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina. The setting for the first game is a facility that draws energy from abnormal entities, and Angela is the assistant to the manager. You could probably cover the manager and the setting of The City as villains as well. My suspicion is that The City is an organism, with humans and abnormalities being cells that make it up.

The movie only touched the surface of some of these things, and didn’t cover others. But at 3:30 hours, it really couldn’t cover more. I’m glad these video essays exist.
