    Vigo did seem more honorable than most of the antagonists in this series. First thing he tried to do was talk with John, try to clear the table with a conversation. When that failed, he did what he had to to protect his interests and family, no matter how angry or disappointed he was. He took the deal to give up his son in exchange for his life and the promise John wouldn't come after him again. But he also wanted revenge on Marcus because Marcus broke his contract, failing to kill John and helping him escape which led to his son's death and that just goes to show that Mafia are still criminals and will put themselves first, no matter how they dress themselves up. He puts on the facade of an honorable criminal, and he likely does value some code, but in the end he still has to look after himself and his interests above all.

      Yeah, Vigo was in a pickle. Try and fight the legendary John Wick or just give up his heir to one man over a car and dog? Giving up his son would've made him look weak to the other families and to his own people. He would've either faced war or assassination from inside sooner or later.

    Ive heard this argument about how Iosef couldn't have known John Wick was such a killing machine before he robbed and beat him but that's not really true. Think back on their 1st meeting.
    Iosef sees John pumping gas and walks up and offers to buy the car but John just casually brushes him off. These made Isaof angry but had he thought about John's reaction, it should've given him a small pause. A average citizens reaction to a obvious Russian gangster vaguely threatening them would've been much different to say the least but John seemed more amused and annoyed than nervous but that's a small, easy tip off to miss for a inexperienced young man. However, the next red flag was inexcusable to miss. For him as a Don's son and for the head of his crew ( Guy who told John to "have a nice day, sir") When Iosaf said, in Russian "Everything's for sell bitch" then John responded IN RUSSIAN "Not this bitch", that told him two things. One he speaks Russian fluently enough for it to be his 1st language and two, he understands who Iosaf is and what's really being said here in undertones, not just what's being said out load. This should've tipped him and his crew that John was, at the very least, a part of the Russian underculture and most likely connected with organizations mob. Standard procedure before attacking him would be to check up on this guys status in his family (Get his plates run, get a name, and inquire his status) which would've immediately sent red flags all over the place

    • @SEAZNDragon
      @SEAZNDragon Před 5 měsíci +36

      I feel that speaks more to Iosef's immaturity and cockiness. A smart, prudent mobster would have done a check on John due to the traits you pointed out. However, as the son of not just a Russian mob boss but THE Russian mob boss, Iosef probably thought he was above not just regular society laws but the underground society laws.
      Much as been made about the lore and worldbuilding of the John Wick movies, but one thing for sure is even killers have their boundaries. Not just "no business on Continental grounds" but most the assassins' killing is by contract or self-defense. Even real life mobsters had a general rule of no killings or deals without the boss's consent. I would go as far as John's hunting down of Iosef would be seen by others in the movie's underground as his punishment for breaking the rules of business.

    • @pavelslama5543
      @pavelslama5543 Před 5 měsíci +15

      Had that world been real, Iosef was bound to run into major issues sooner or later. With this behavior, he was sure to unknowingly start a gang war or attack some other assassin. In fact, John speaking Russian should have sounded his inner alarm, as he might have belonged to another mob or even to their mob.

      @SEAZNDragon oh yeah, definitely. Like you said, he was cocky and thought he was above any real appraisal. I'm just saying a lot of ppl say he had no way of knowing who John Wick was and everytime I hear that, the 1st thing I think is "Well, if he had just made one of his mooks make a phone call to check the guy out, it would've saved a lot of trouble. As a Don's son, this should be standard procedure for him"
      Not saying it's a plot hole, either. As you pointed out, the guys obviously a spoiled idiot who's was probably going to get himself killed sooner or later anyway.

      @@ericwhite1942 I get what you mean. I also feel Viggo for whatever reason let his son know he’s part of a mob family but didn’t teach him the ins and outs. Like a noble in history or the owner of a family business who despite planning to past on their title or company doesn’t have the foresight to train their kid. Maybe it’s the fear of being usurped or feeling they didn’t have the maturity for role or hell being a lazy parent. Or heck even being too loving of a parent to expose them to the worst aspects of the job (doubt this is Viggo but the man definitely cares for his son despite the screw up).

    I think, given Viggo's parenting style, that Iosef would have gone after John Wick anyway because of his ego.

    Who but someone with a rampant, runaway ego would say he'll go after "the man you hire to kill the f-cking Boogeyman"?

    In my head canon, Iosef was too young to be included in family business, then sent away to boarding school/ private school/ university until by the time he came back John Wick was gone and not discussed. Iosef never knew him, except in the rare murmurs about 'Baba Yaga,' which he dismisses. His coming back, and his transition to adulthood and participation in the family business, comes during a flourishing for the Tarasov Family. The family is very much on the rise, with Viggo possibly being in line for promotion to The High Table*. This means that life is absolutely easy-mode for Iosef, who learns that he can do pretty much anything he wants. Viggo letting his son do whatever he wants is just about the worst thing you can do to a child, short of outright abuse.
    John Wick's Impossible Task probably involved knocking off a lot of other New York mob bosses (with, we learned, sizeable assistance from Gianni). Viggo has spent the last five years consolidating his gains, building out his web of influence as the rival organizations JW decapitated (probably by assassinating the bosses) struggle and collapse. Viggo has picked up many lucrative rackets and valuable personnel in the fallout of John's work. His right-hand-man (Dean Winters) clearly came from another outfit, he doesn't even speak Russian!
    *Although The High Table seems to be made up of the heads of global crime families, Viggo is not high enough, even after his gains, to be among them. As evidence, we can see that John Wick killing him does not incur their wrath.

    At first I wondered why Viggo never told Josef about John but then again seeing as he’s a crime lord, and succession is often earned through murdering the man in charge when it comes to such things, it would be smart if he kept his greatest assassins a secret, including John and the entire secret assassin world, even if John is retired. U never know when they might slip back into the workforce. Hell maybe he was just being secretive cuz it’s the rules, don’t talk about the assassins. And since Josef is clearly not ready to run an organization, he’s not gonna give him info on skilled assassins when he’ll use them irresponsibly especially when the rules are so cut throat

    I liked the dichotomy of Viggo being a meticulous planner and intelligent person and his son being a vengeful person who acted out of emotion
    He knew how deadly an ex-continental assassin could be and berated his son for acting out of emotion and going after John over a car without doing any research on the man he was attempting to rob
    While not the most intelligent mob boss in cinema history he certainly is one of the most intelligent in the world of John Wick

    Viggo tried as hard as he could to manage the situation. Allowing so much collateral damage to accumulate before finally sacrificing Iosef (and perhaps failing to dispose of Marcus more discreetly) prevented Viggo from being the hero of the movie tbh...

    I like the simplicity of Viggo and Josef. Hell, I like the simplicity of the first movie. We were given a glimpse of this shadowy underworld that used the Continental Hotel as a sort of home base. Viggo had his own criminal empire outside of this little cabal of assassins.
    The following movies pretty much did away with the outside influencers and made every significant threat be from the world of assassins.

    I feel like Yosef not knowing who John Wick is was kind of a plot hole. John had retired
    4 1/2 years before the events of the film and he’s in his mid-20s so there’s no way he wasn’t already involved in this organization before Wick retires. I mean everyone else on earth seems to know John Wick, except for this one guy
