“John will come for you, and you will do nothing because you _can_ do nothing.” Imagine having to tell your only son something like this.
And then the parting shot of Wick with his box of pistols, suppressors, magazines, and stacks upon stacks of Continental Coins.
In other words he is telling his son he will be dead soon😄
Even deeper because he knows it's a death sentence for himself too. A boss can see his son killed and do nothing. So he knows his son ruined both their lives.

His weakness was apparent when his first response to getting punched by John Leguizamo was to whine to daddy about it.
Isn't that what all parents who have kids with terminal illnesses go through?
THE SPEECH THAT STARTED IT ALL!!! It is undeniable that Michael Nyqvist's delivery of this speech set the tone for what was to come and was a pinnacle part of Creating the Legend of JOHN FUCKING WICK!

And as for his wife, she was working for the family John had to wipe out. And he had to take them out 100% because he couldn't leave nobody left alive who could call in his wife's marker. Completing the impossible task is how he freed them both.

Imagine knowing your son is a dead man walking and realizing, for all your power in the criminal underworld, there is *nothing* you can do to save him from the consequences of his own actions.
And then trying to save him anyway. Dude could have avoided everything, all it would have cost him was his son -- blood for blood. He told John no. He knew he couldn't save him, but he was willing to risk everything to try -- not a good man, but he was a good dad.

@@atlasgraham154 Vigo couldn't just let John kill his son, not even necessarily out of love- that may be a part of it, but his station doesn't allow weakness.
As a crime boss, especially in this setting where reputation and codes have extremely high value, he has to fight back- otherwise he will have set the precedent of vulnerability.
I love the whole "buried in concrete" thing. To me it shows John knew if he EVER had to return, he would need enough strength, will, and purpose to smash through all that. Pretty dope.
Either that or a DeWalt SDS hammer drill. :)

What I love about this scene is that Viggo is one of the few people who have seen the monster that John can be and you can see the fear in his eyes when he tells the bar story.

@@takinheat1494 To be fair a lot of times shows have plot armor they put their characters into those situations by random bs/stupidity. I guess you could argue it is likely something was bound to stop John at some point but eh he was on a total rampage and only caught because he got surprised by a car hitting him. He also had no backup plan for being caught although that could be realistic, I suppose.

That one line of dialogue tells you all you need to know about John Wick!
Every actor in this scene seriously did such a damn good job. From telling a story about the man who singlehandedly built your empire for you through piles of bodies to the fear that is shown in the sons eyes when he is hugged, the small mannerisms when sipping the "alcohol" in the scene make it feel so real, even the advisor/lawyer dudes reactions are on point and his body language says he does not want to be there. So much about this scene comes together to make it good but holy crap the actors made it flawless.
The fact that be poured crap vodka for his son, didn't drink it himself, gut punched him, then grabbed an expensive bottle and pour it for himself.. that little detail is so amazing.

Why can't the father simply tell his son about John Wick before it becomes an issue? It seems like it's pretty important. Just show him a photo and say "Look at this guy. This is John Wick. Don't mess with this guy under any circumstances." How hard is that? Instead, this seems to be the first time the son has ever heard of John Wick. The father even says, it's not what he did, it's who he did it to. So, why can't he warn his son who not to do things to? This should not be a random surprise.

Usually a “This is how bad a person is” speech feels too much like a grinding info dump. Somehow Michael Nyqvist makes it sound like a terrifying omen.
It easily could have been that. He absolutely crushed it.
I think it's because he keeps it super vague about what John actually did. The only specific that he brings up is a bar fight. That and the delivery of it.

The way he hugged his son knowing what was coming for him was as inevitable as the next sunrise. He wasn't mad at him, he was mourning for him.

This scene has more layers and storytelling than some films.
So much told and explained you can’t go into it all at once. My favorite part is how this organization actually honored its word when John completed “an impossible task”.

It's not a code of a honor it's more so out of fear...Vigo says its an impossible task because once your in the crime world you don't get out they feared John Wick enough to leave him alone they feared John Wick so much that the suspension of him ever going to the cops was never something that they considered so there was never this idea of cutting him off as a loose end 😊
@@BostonBori92It probably has more to do with the High Table. The “impossible task” was probably apart of a deal overseen by the High Table. So if they went back on their word to let John go, they’d all die.
@TheAluvisify While I do think that the HT had involvement since John's family sits at the table I still don't think Vigo is talking about them...Because the fact that his family is apart of it protects him as we saw from the 3rd movie when he returns and the High Table didn't really care about him until he broke their rules...So was the presence of the HT around sure but being who John is I still think it was about leaving especially since his family holds a ton of resentment for it amd seems to the only ones that do

This scene was so intense. Although a gift from his late wife, It’s almost ridiculous that the death of his dog and stolen car was the prime plot but it intensifies the magnitude of Wicks sheer ability. The delivery set the tone and carried it out through every Wick kill

I know it was a gift from his late wife. It’s the fact most action movies have a more strategic premise than a “dog and car”.
This scene still gives me goosebumps every time I watch this movie. Never fails. IMO, it's truly one of the best scenes in an action movie.

This is just a master-class of writing and acting on all counts. The casualness which Viggo lays into Iosef, like he's just a hired lackey, not his son at all. Putting his jacket back on, adjusting the cuffs. The shock on the other guy's face. And the way Viggo tells what is basically John's origin story....................
So sorry that Michael Nyqvist is no longer with us. What a talent.

John Wick is not mayhem. He is Calamity.
It’s funny how in movies of this genre the assassin who works for the mob usually does not get a chance to quit the life and start over. They wouldn’t have another choice.
In this case Viggo gave John the opportunity to leave, with the condition of doing one final “impossible” job, which John ended up doing anyway. A man like that is an asset. Someone that, from the perspective of a mob leader, you can never let go. But Viggo knew that there was no way in hell he could deny John Wick the opportunity to quit. He knew what John was capable of doing and was terrified of John. You can tell by how he tells the story, and how he knows his son made a grave mistake.
Viggo had massive respect for John, but you can see in his eyes that he’s also freaking out big time. He knew his son was dead, and there’s nothing he could’ve done to prevent it.
There are a bunch of movies, especially in the streaming age, where a former assassin/operative/person with a dark past is pulled back in or has to use their old skills to protect somebody (usually a kid). Which means they all got out at some point, whether cleanly or sneaking away.
A father telling his son he is dead no matter what happens..
No amount of apologies can make up for what that stupid idiot did to piss off John Wick w/o knowing his history. That idiot signed his death warrant and not even his father can save him from Wick’s revenge.
This is how you introduce a character. Good exposition.
It’s perfect exposition because it doesn’t feel forced.
We obviously need to hear the story. But so does the son who was apparently too young to know what had happened in the past.

This speech means A LOT more after you've seen all the movies and then go back and watch the first one.
Throughout the Wick movies we hear several character reference John Wick having killed 3 men in a bar, with a pencil. It is always related 3rd person, except here, by Viggo - "I once saw him kill 3 men in a bar, with a pencil." So he was actually there and knows it is not an exaggeration. In fact he makes reference to the stories, if anything, being watered down.
One of the best, if not best introductions to a character! That scene was, the creation to Mr Wick!

This scene is given such a power house delivery. You get the sense of just about every emotion for all parties involved.
The father's sense of immediate defeat and fear, the son's naivete and arrogance and John's righteous unbridled fury.
I mean..just wow. You can absolutely tell that Vigo is scared witless of John and what he can do. Not just to his son but to the entire empire he built. Hes no push over himself but he at least has enough sense to have respect and fear of John.
From this point on, the entire empire John helped Vigo build is about to get absolutely wrecked.

That scene is still amazing, to see the fear in his eyes as he told his son, with all his wealth, resources and power, you fucked up and I can’t save you. I wish I could never say that to my children

The absolute disrespect Iosef had for John despite how his father spoke of him. His father who runs a very dangerous and successful group.
The kind of person Iosef was has led to his own demise.
He is neither going to be missed more mourned for.

"You stabbed the devil in the back and forced him back into the life that he had just left. You incinerated the priest's temple. Burned it to the ground. Now he's free of the marker, what do you think he'll do?"
As with this amazing scene, it is the words of others that convey what John is - death in the shape of a man. That was the genius of good writing. John never blows his own horn. He's made his rep by being the best and walking away from it.

This scene was marvelous, and considering he has to tell his own son who John Wick is tells me that either he never warned his colleagues to 'never target Wick', or that his son HAD been warned in subtext before but had no focus or commitment to being careful about his targets. Maybe a mixture of both.
Looking back at it, I thought it was strange that Iosef didn't seem to have any knowledge of his family's history, specifically WHO it was that stacked all the bodies that built their criminal empire. Or if Iosef WAS told to never mess with John, the poor sap was too ignorant and cocky to bother remembering haha.
3:55 - 4:18 I feel at this moment viggos son truly realized how royally fucked he was because the anger and fear behind his fathers eyes combined with his hug showed there truly was no escaping John Wick and that this was his end
Iosef refuses to care about messing with John Wick, but he cares about the consequences he will be facing.
Iosef met his end, but his suffering would being in the afterlife where everyone wants a piece of him.
What an intense scene! RIP Michael Nyqvist..... such a great actor!
I like to think that Viggo isn't just horrified that his son potentially has destroy his whole operation and doom them all to death.
Maybe a little, at least a little part of him is genuinely upset at his son for messing with John Wick after all he did for Viggo and their 'business' before retirement.
I’m guessing the afterlife, Iosef will be tortured and the people who were killed by John Wick would be out to get him and blame Iosef for their deaths.

I love how you can see throughout the scene how scared Iosef gets seeing how terrified Viggo is of John. Really gives him the sense that he just died, and the Boogeyman was coming to get the body.
Alfie Allen really knows how to play these characters that had kissed their ass goodbye without realizing it.

Out of everyone, Iosef was probably to closest to actually killing John Wick. Literally had him unarmed and beaten up. Had he just finished the job, we wouldn't have the sequels we had lol.
He thought Wick was just a nobody. Not worth killing, in his eyes.
He came across John at his weakest. The guy was grief-stricken over the wife he just lost, he was depressed, and IIRC he had been drinking for a while before they showed up, so he was probably kind of drunk. What Iosef and his boys did wasn't just beat him up and kill his dog... they gave him PURPOSE again.

I love how he immediately just disowned his son like yeah you’re not with us anymore. You’re a dead man walking there’s one person on this earth you do not mess with and you messed with that person and you’ll pay the price.
Michael Nyqvist's last sequence in this movie was amazing. He literally went through every emotion you could think of before the hand-to-hand confrontation with John Wick. Great acting.

I like how simple the storyline is. It's as basic as it gets for a revenge story with a great background for the characters. The action and the acting to me is what makes this series great.

Got passes to an early screening of this movie. It was like a month before the release. My son and I went in not knowing anything about it at all. We left John Wick fans for life. I kept telling people for a month that they were not ready for this film.
I love how Vigo approaches his son invading his personal space, making him step back, totally occupying the place where he was. That level of authority, telling him immediately 'you have no power here, so shut up and listen.' Love those details.
The guy in the background having a headache listening to Vigo's retelling of John's power level. The stress he portrays when taking the smoke, understanding that Vigo forced him to stay because this was now a problem for the whole organization. They are in deep shit. Because of one man. A terrifying man. A man you dont f*ck with.

the running gag of "...oh..." any time john is brought up in a story just gives me chills every time...also its thought that you're paid in gold coins for contracts, possible 1 coin per contract. The amount of coins he has....there's maybe 30 or more coins per sleeve with 24 sleeves which would mean there's at least 720 gold coins (also each one is valued at $2-5k)

Agreed. Powerful intro to the main character. This one scene sets the stage for the rest of the movie and as it turned out, all the sequels.
A few “ Flashbacks” to his earlier life would’ve enhanced the character and storyline but obviously not necessary.
I think the lack of flashbacks accomplishes two things. It further mythologizes his boogeyman reputation and it leaves room for further interpretation and development. Prequels and the like.

Literally the catalyst that started it at all. I love how this echoes throughout the movies. For me it’s just awesome seeing John be an unstoppable force that’s exactly what I want. To see this man overcome an impossible task to be the one that got out and laid the foundations of that very enterprise. The man you send to kill the boogeyman that’s what’s awesome about these movies 😃

Iosef is the most hated character in the John Wick Franchise.
He is greedy, arrogant, selfish, remorseless, and a jerk. He doesn't care about the damage he has done, but he cares when he faces the consequences, including getting punched, scolded, and killed. He tries to beg for his life and justify his actions, but he meets his end with dishonor.
Everyone, including Aurelio, would be happy.
