    I forgot to mention it in the intro, as I do sometimes, but some people are asking why I chose Mr. House as the first Fallout character to cover considering the moral ambiguity surrounding his character. Well that's because I didn't! The patrons did. Mr. House was the patron pick for this month, and so he happened to be covered before any of the other more villainous organizations/people in this universe due to their selection. Hope that clears things up for people wondering why I went with him first!

    Robert Edwin House is a peculiar character. He definitely has an ego and is a businessman first above all else, but I believe him to be a ruthless pragmatist who isn’t easily sidetracked nor does he concern himself with the affairs of others as long as they don’t conflict with his ambitions. His authoritarian tendencies are his worst quality, without question, yet he simultaneously seems the best suited to ensure the long-term survival of humanity. The man is perfectly controversial.

    • @Franky566
      @Franky566 Před 2 měsíci +45

      i disagree. when it comes down to "how do we stop the actual extinction of humanity?" house is the only one in the entire series that provides answers. its about the survival of the species. arguably, new vegas is the only actual civilization in the entire wasteland.

    • @LordDaret
      @LordDaret Před 2 měsíci +31

      It’s because Authoritarianism is bad when you need peace between nations usually. Because House is trying to establish Switzerland without a Congress of Vienna, he has TO BE that force and thus establish himself as a stable nation not to be trifled with. You can’t establish this with words, just look at Haiti.
      I just realized the Haiti phrase is very similar to “look out the window” as House said.

    • @Ultimaton100
      @Ultimaton100 Před 2 měsíci +28

      @@Franky566I agree with House’s vision, I just merely, like others, question his methods in reaching those goals.
      That said, I disagree with the notion that his vision is the only solution to ensure the survival of humanity. Under President Tandi, the NCR was doing pretty well in that regard, bringing civilization and cooperation for the collective good back to the wasteland in California. Sure with corrupt individuals like Kimball subsequently at the helm, the NCR lost its way, but the potential for it to return to its original purpose remains.
      Honestly a major reason I sided with House on my first playthrough was also because, in addition to supporting his long-term agenda, I wanted to give the NCR a chance to reclaim its identity from corrupt politicians like Kimball, and it’s outright stated he’s going to be thrown out of office if the NCR loses the Mojave campaign.

      @@LordDaret I have to disagree, that Authoritarianism is a bad thing, especialy in good written Fallout universe (not counting Fallour 4 and 76). Everything in this universe in in shades of gray, even Legion (and underdeveloped as well, originaly map was supposed to be much bigger and even deeper than it is). Egalitarianism and Democracy have a lot of negatives, same way like direct opposite.

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the fate of Vault 21. As someone who sided with House, i find it to be one of his most interesting displays of ruthlessness that make him such a compelling character. He displaced an entire community of potentially hundreds of people, destroyed most of their home, and only allowed the remains to function as a hotel that would serve his Strip, all because he didn't want the Vault's tunnels to be used against him - only for Benny to have a secret escape tunnel of his own that went completely undetected.

      Him kicking the Vault residents out is what led to Doc Mitchell and his wife venturing towards California. She died on the way at Good springs, and doc Mitchell never moved on. You can actually find her grave. Anyway the very guy who saves you and never asks for anything in return, has dialogue trees where without expressing a negative opinion, reveals the consequences of Houses decisions. You could say it worked to the Couriers favor that things went as they went, but it didn't go to Doc Mitchell's favor. I like a lot of the good things about being under House, but I side against him for reasons like this. I love the way House built up a future Vegas, but I also prefer when the people win the jackpot and the house doesn't win. House won't bring as much change as his stans seem to think he will, most people's lives will never change, he is not the savior of the wasteland. House says democracy is what led to the war, but actually it was people like him too. The people running vault tec, were people like him. The Chinese government, were autocrats like him. He's not all to different from Caesar, he doesn't crucify people, but he just makes them live in squalor and abject misery.

It forces the player to truly believe that their faction is the one and only good choice, which is not easy. House is easily my favorite ending in the game. I always saw his endings as as a reflection of the Courier themselves. A good karma Courier resulting in a much more fairer House. The one thing that absolutely stood out to me the most from the rest of the factions is how he's not wanting to be the dictator, but a facilitator. He wants humanity to have a chance to thrive once again via interstellar travel and supposedly continue on without him.
    I've heard that the development team had to make some drawbacks to House like killing the BoS because he would've been an easy choice for players to side with over the rest. I'm one of the few that doesn't mind killing the BoS given how they refuse to adapt in the Mojave. In Veronica's quest, they literally gun down a bunch of harmless physicians and the fact that McNamara never addresses that not to mention he knows they'll die out shows how twisted the chapter is.
    If F:NV is to ever be given a canon ending, I think the House ending is the perfect canddiate as it leaves a lot of open ended scenarios with both the Legion and the NCR. Thanks for covering one of my favorite video-game characters of all time.

    I like how all 3 factions have the element of *Past , Present and Future* and their different leanings on each one are what give them their good and bad sides:
    *NCR* is focused on the present while taking inspiration from the past , but not considering the futue. Its the most "good" faction on a base level , but it doesn't remove the fact that many of its officials are corrupt and their lack of forethought could lead them to make the same mistakes the previous government made. No matter how many well-intentioned people there are.
    *The Legion* is all about bringing the past into the present. A time whem human life only mattered if you were born into privilege or if you were strong enough to be the last man standing. Its the most prosperous faction for sure, with the most territory, resources and army.
    But what does that prosperity really mean when it was built on the backs of slaves who are ready to rebel at any given opportunity or when vast army is mostly made up of just slightly more disciplined and better equipped raiders who are itching at the chance to get more power.
    The Legion, like the empire they take so much inspiration from, is a house of cards doomed to fall in on itself because they aren't looking to fix potential future problems, just bury them with more conquests, which is ironically having the opposite effect.
    In fact, the conversation with Legate Lanius you can have if your Speech is high enough is essentially just you pointing this out. How the Legion's constant rapid expansion will one day stretch them soo thin that actually *defending* all that territory will be impossible. Be it from attacks from rival factions, from rebellions and/or traitors in their own ranks.
    And, to Lanius' credit, he does show himself reasonable enough to hear you out and has a *genuine* "Oh, shit!" moment when he does the math himself and realises that you're right.
    He leaves to convince Ceasar to retreat to fix the festering problems with the Legion, which he HAS been warning him about for years, albeit not before giving you a great deal of respect by saying that he's looking forward to the day he meets you and NCR on the field of battle once their hold on the east of the country is stabilised. Basically, acknowledging you as an equal for your cunning alone.
    This , to be fair, shows that there *are* people in the Legion who are competent leaders and who can turn into something more than what it is, but its quite unlikely
    The titular character of the video House, is focused on the future and learning from the past, but is completely dismissive of the present.
    Sure, House has an actual plan to save humanity, with the intelligence, patience, longevity and resources to make it happen.
    But the problem is that the guy was completely blind, whether its willfully or not doesn't matter, to the festering problems his style of governing was creating.
    He didn't care about the growing inequality between the citizens of New Vegas and he didn't care about the growing anemosity between the factions helping run his city or that they were all basically mobsters.
    When your faction is mostly made up of robots who follow your every whim and people who are only following you out of self interest, with growing inequality on top of that, what does that say about the society House would have created? How many problems will his "ideal future" really have when its foundation is this rotted?
    Despite his longevity, House can't live forever so, like the Legion, even if he had the time he needed to build his utopia it would eventually crumble in on itself the moment he died.

      What he did to vault 21 what he continues to do to freeside are proof he is evil. A leader who does not care for all of the people he imposes his rule upon is inherently evil. He forces freeside to follow his rules and continues to not allow them the same benefits as the few wealthy people that live on the strip. Actively making a decision that condemns hundred to thousands of ppl to starving to death and other horrid living conditions is evil. You can't argue that he isn't able to help these people or that it's just a side effect he didn't intend. Keeping freeside in perpetual poverty is a conscious decision he makes to keep them so focused on day to day survival that they don't have any opportunity to push back against his rule. If he at the very least saw to it that the people of Freeside were well fed and had clean water and that it's ppl had their basic needs cared for, you could make the argument he's just utilitarian. But he chooses not to help them just because they want to be independent and his ego cannot handle doing something that doesn't end up with the people he's helping not being kept under his thumb. He very clearly can afford to extend relief to at the very least the people of Freeside and it would benefit them, but because they understandably don't want to give up their freedoms, he forces them into poverty and doesn't even allow those who are okay with being at the mercy of a corporate autocrat the opportunity to enter New Vegas unless they're wealthy enough or know someone who is. Hes just good at pretending like he's just being pragmatic even though his actions are very clearly poisoned by his ego and need to be in control and always profiting. Thing is, House isn’t evil though. For all intents and purposes, he’s actually right in his analysis of the Legion and NCR, both are fundamentally worse for the Mojave and the country as a whole than he is. He has a plan and a solution and means to get there, he just needs time. And for a lot of people comparing him to Musk in the modern day, House is actually a real genius with a history of success, he doesn’t make discussions solely in his own narcissism. The only similarity is that they’re both rich businessmen. House is directly inspired from Howard Hughes as can be seen by the numerous clear references. None of the New Vegas factions are inherently “good” in the conventional sense, especially the Legion, but House is clearly the best option out of all of them, and the only one the has a plan for long term success and sustainability.
    Also, if you’re covering the Fallout games now, might I suggest the Master, the Enclave, the Institute, Caesar and his Legion, the corrupt NCR bureaucrats, Alistair Tenpenny, Kellogg, Benny, Father Elijah, The Children of Atom, Ulysses, and the reformed Joshua Graham? The latter two are my favorite characters in the series.

    @nickchavez720 Před 2 měsíci +38

    Mr House really isn't evil though, especially when compared to other Fallout antagonists.
    The worst you can say about him is that he is Machiavellian in the sense that he is not so much concerned about whether an action is right or wrong, but what is going to be best for the State. Now that doesn't mean anything goes, but it does mean needing a willingness to perform acts of necessary cruelty if it advances the glory and interests of the state in the long term; key word there is necessary. New Vegas is between two much larger powers that wants to take it over and will do anything to make it happen. It is well established in the game that the only reason the NCR hasn't tried to annex it is because the Legion is a bigger problem. In a situation like that you need to be willing to get your hands dirty because you don't have the time or luxury to think about the moral implications.
    Whether or not you like House comes down to if you believe democracy is inherently good or not. If you do Mr. House is evil. If you don't Mr. House may not be a "good guy" but he is hardly a tyrant either.
    If we are going to say House is evil then it is only fair to say that President Kimbal is evil as well for the things he does.
