    The Harkonnens were such fun villains in the books and in Villneuve's adaptation. Rabban was a wild dog, Feyd-Rautha was both sledgehammer and scalpel, and the Baron was a gluttonous, back-biting, unscrupulous degenerate.

    The Baron, particularly in the Villeneuve rendition, is a character who reminds me a great deal of Tywin Lannister.
    He's a character of absolute control, absolute intellect and brilliant resource management, who is a character utterly dedicated to the supremacy of their family. Like Tywin, he can coldly inflict the most heinous violence upon his enemies, but does not particularly seem to enjoy this.
    The Baron also meets his end through the exact same self assuredness and disdain for his enemies that Tywin does.

    • @blackosprey2219
      @blackosprey2219 Před 3 měsíci +5

      Maybe the movie's different, but he's far from an absolute intellect in the books. He constantly discounts the Fremen threat, never even allowing himself to consider that they could number in the millions and kill Sadukar until a Mentat baby-walked him through the logic.
      Granted, Tywin wasn't immune to personal biases and didn't account for the threat his own family posed. But I doubt he'd so utterly underestimate a big-picture tactical threat, or totally miss how a hell world survivors would likely be elite soldier material.

      That would be interesting. In the original novel, Hyde isn't so much an alternate personality as he is an identity/persona Jekyll uses to indulge in his darker impulses. Shows how anonymity can enable us to engage in things we would not do in our everday lives. Only at the end of the novel do Jekyll and Hyde show signs of being two separate personalities as a result of the formers desperate attempts to disassociate himself from his actions as the latter.

      I also read it as him going back to a more primitive form, as most hominids were short compared to Homo sapiens, and Hyde is often portrayed as ape like and described in the books as not quite human.

    So, I think the thing about Frank Herbert is that while he may or may not have given the baron homosexual tendencies due to his own thoughts and leanings on the subject, in the very least, he definitely understood that this alone is not enough to condemn a person, as the baron is definitely evil because of his reprehensible actions, and not just his sexual tendencies. Good video though a couple remarks are unnecessary.
    Personally out of all the portrayals of the Barons in visual media that is most close to the book even if the version didn't capture all the Baron's most abhorrent wicked lawless Book traits of his behavior and personality it is the Dune Mini Series version of the Baron played Lan McNeice is my most favorite.
    I liked how the Mini Series displays and shows the Baron's cunning, witty, intellect, and the true scope of how his plots to fulfill his ambitions while also when his nephews do something which they think is the most cunning he instantly educates and shows his loathing disapproval and criticism of the immature ways they did it which were subtle and in the impractical times that undermines the long term agenda and opportunities they could reap. Including when Feyd tried to set him for assassination through poisoning which the Baron wasn't impressed by.
    I liked how perceptive Lan McNeice portrayed that demonstrating such a personality to be active while being vindictive, ambitiously selfish, insidious and willing to talka down on Rabban and Feyd's unenlightened level and degree of scheming. He played a good wicked villain.
    Stellan's okay but I prefer Ian McNeice's portrayal.
    Book Baron is another sinful wicked person who is even more practical in both ruthlessness and foresight. If the Baron's character was a house in Warhammer 40k he would be a distinguished successful authority over a sector I think. Though the Inquisition's Ordos would be watching him real closely for heresy in that scenario. Book Baron's deviousness, adaptive political moves, emotional practice, and cunning pragmatic tone would make him quite a successful insidious house in a environment like 40k. So long as he doesn't stick his head out too much and stays in line. You don't want to invoke the furious wrath of the Inquisition even with that amount of power and political maneuvering.

    I genuinely enjoyed Denis Villieuve version of the Harkonnens, particularly the Baron. In the book, Baron Harkonnen while being a true threat and mastermind, also came off as a bit cartoonish overall. Stellan Skarsgaard however, brought a genuine menace to the character, leaving out the over the top villainy, and showing him as a grotesque schemer. Like a brain taking human form and plotting in the shadows as he moves everyone around him like pieces on a chessboard.
    Please do a complete one on Feyd Rautha. I think he was a perfect rival to Paul Atriedes and is a true menace as the Baron’s mad dog in the story.

Paul very much is a villain as well, he manipulated the Fremen into seeing him as a god king and then launched a holy war that killed mass numbers of people. Jessica used the Fremen as tools and even admits in the follow up books that she hates the planet and saw the Fremen as nothing but pawns.
