    It's ironic. The prophecy Shen overheard said a creature of black and white would defeat him, yet if you look at how he died, the thing that ultimately defeated him was himself. A creature also of black and white

    Think one of the biggest reasons why Shen thinks his parents never loved him was because they learned he was going to die but punished him for eliminating a perceived threat, he doesn’t get why they side with the pandas and not him who was supposed to be killed by one. They didn't trust their own son and sought help from a soothsayer. distrust from parents can be pretty traumatic to people. along with him being a different color and all the doubts his parents have own him, add up and Shen just assumes that his parents hate him even though he knows they love him, evident from the interval scene with the soothsayer.

Plus she probably didn't include the fireworks to not raise their fear and he literally slaughtered an animal village. Any compassionate, sane being would be horrified. 1. Gary Oldman's performance absolutely elevated the material
    2. I love how, even though Shen is an *evil* basterd, they don't shy away from showing that he has a softer/more vulnerable side. You can tell that he is afraid of his prophesized death, that deep down he grieves his parents and wishes that he could fill the gaping hole in his soul that the absence of their love left in him. Heck, in some of the deleted scenes its implied that the Fortuneteller was basically his nanny, making their interactions *very bittersweet*
    But instead of dealing with these emotions, which would have also changed his fate ironically, he buries them with ambition and hatred.

    Lord Shen made the mistake of letting his soothsayer go. She not only constantly warned him of his demise but also saw it through by aiding Po when he was beaten by Lord Shen the first time around.
    But the most interesting thing is that the soothsayer also helped raise Shen as his nanny. Rather than execute or imprison her he let her go much like how his parents banished him.

    What I like about this villain is, that even though he shows no redeeming qualities, no remorse or hesitation in his dark path, he finally not only fails because he was unwilling to stray from that path, but also because he had a shred of something else in him.
    He let the soothsayer leave unharmed, where the clichee check all boxes villain would have killed her for no reason and then she fishes Po out of the river, heals him and gives him the clarity he needs to defeat Shen.

    One thing I think could have been mentioned is that, I think Shen is partially inspired by one of the darkest periods in history for China and it's people. The Second Sino-Japanese War up to World War II
    Not only are the markings in his feathers supposed to represent Yin and Yang, as well as what Vile mentioned about the symbolism of White in Chinese Culture, but the markings are incredibly similar to the Imperial Japanese Red Sun in terms of how they're drawn. I think Shen's background of royalty is also partially inspired by Emperor Hirohito of Japan, who either ordered or allowed the genocidal war crimes their armies committed against Chinese people(and many others).
    Shen is a representation of real world evil manifested in the form of a peacock.

      @dionettaeon Před 4 měsíci +17

      My guess would be that Chameleon represents the "dark mirror" to Po. Perhaps, as Shen is connected to Po's past, Chameleon will be connected to Po's future, a warning of sorts should he stray onto darker paths. Since previous prophesies were mainly just spoken, and those attempting to avoid it fail, the key to avoiding this dark fate could be Po confronting the consequences of it before he's strayed too far.

    In the end, it all comes down to the very lesson Po tried to impart on him. 'You have to let go of those things from the past, because it just doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is what you choose to be now.'
    Shen was a man deeply scarred and defined by his past and believed that ones past created the kind of person you are in the present. And then along comes Po. A man who should, by Shen's logic, be deeply scarred, angry and traumatized by the things Shen did to him. But he isn't. Po let his past go and focused on the present and Shen just can't comprehend how such a thing is possible. And so he rebukes Po's lesson, because to accept it would mean he'd be forced to acknowledge that his entire life could have gone right for him, if he'd wanted it to and the only reason it didn't is because he chose to live a life of misery. Shen created his own pain, his own misery and even in the end, he can't accept that it could have been different. Even in the last minutes of his life, Po offered him a way out and he refused to accept it, because he couldn't cope with the fact that he was a monster of his own making.
    As many people have already pointed out, the warrior of black and white was never Po, it was Shen himself. He externalized the threat of the prophecies onto the pandas and Po in particular, but failed to grasp the symbolism of the prophetic warning. Po is a warrior of black and white and right before their final bout, he even resembles the symbol of Yin and Yang for a few seconds, which freaked Shen out, but despite all those external signs, Shen was always his own warrior of black and white. He defeated himself. Po would never have been a threat to him if he'd left the pandas alone. But Shen refused to accept that. Even in the very last seconds of his life, he chose to fight Po and refused to save his own life when he saw he was about to get splattered by a falling canon (a weapon of his own creation), preferring even death over accepting the truth.

    A lot of people seem to miss this. In the final battle, A warrior of black and white does Shen in, but it's not Po. Po offers a ray of light. The warrior of black and white that undoes Lord Shen, is Lord Shen.

    • @fernthaisetthawatkul5569
      @fernthaisetthawatkul5569 Před 2 měsíci +2

      exactly, it was never po that defeated him, it was shen himself! po was merely acting in defense of himself and his homeland the entire time. it was shen who murdered the pandas, it was shen who initiated his conquest of china. ultimately it was shen who initiated every event that led to his demise. that final 'fight sequence' was simply a metaphor for shen's journey this whole time, he thought po was the one who needed to be defeated, but in reality he was destroying himself!

He's also the reason Po was found, adopted and raised by Mr. Ping. How he met and befriended Master Shifu and the Furious Five as well as how he became the Dragon Warrior in the first place.

    Lord Shen reminds me of Lord Frieza. Both characters committed a genocide of species due to a prophecy. Additionally, both Shen and Frieza are still ultimately defeated by a member of race they nearly eradicated. Their personalities are also not too dissimilar, with both Shen and Frieza being arrogant, prideful, vindictive, etc.

  • @peridotite

    seriously like the best villain i've ever seen. everything about him is all so good
    his character design is god tier. ofc all the character designs in kfp are super good but i LOVE the way shen looks and moves. how his color scheme is all white and it's yet another way in which kfp subverts expectations because white is usually associated with goodness and purity. and the red accents really make it a sick looking character. not to mention the fact that in every single scene he's in, he's ALWAYS illuminated by red lighting, even on his final moments! the color symbolism on kfp2 goes OFF. red represents evil, and shen is pure evil. also, his fighting style is beautiful. the feather knives are cool as fuck and he actually uses his tail during the fight with master rhino to distract his enemies and throw them off!! just pure love for this design. plus he looks elegant and classy and then he's just completely unhinged in some scenes its so good
    then his actual character i adore. he's interesting. you understand his motives even though you know he's completely irredeemable! in his eyes his parents rejected him for no reason and he thinks they exhiled him out of hate. he actively refuses to acknowledge otherwise because he's so caught up in the past, he's so obsessed with proving his greatness to himself and his late parents that he can't fathom the idea that they truly loved him. he can't let go! also his relationship with the soothsayer is so good. she genuinely felt sorry for him despite everything he'd done and she so badly wanted him to see the truth, its so interesting. and he just lets her go instead of having her killed because he too cared about her to some extent.
    and then there's his relationship to po. which is so GOOD!! in this movie, po is yang and shen is yin (despite shen being white and po being mostly black! expectation subversion subversion!). they're foils. their destinies have been intertwined since po was a baby! everything shen did to try and stop his destiny from happening caused po's life to happen the way it did and bring him to his own destiny; stopping shen. like oogway said, one often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it. the traumatic ties they have are just too good. shen literally took everything from po, he left him without a home and without his parents, just like shen was. and yet po was able to let go of the past and focus on who he was now, and he came out on top. however shen couldnt and that cost him his life in the end. and another great scene is when po confronts him at the factory and shen projects his own thing with his parents onto po's!! he believed his own parents hated him and didn't love him, so instead of telling po the truth about his, he says "your parents didn't love you". again, he never lets go of the past. also! while shen is always lit up by red, po is constantly surrounded by golds and greens. during the inner peace fireball scene it's very clear, when po catches a fireball and redirects it it turns from red to gold (the clouds in the background too as the scene progresses)
    and bonus he's SO funny in various scenes. like his perfectionism and unhingedness make for hilarious moments in the film despite him being a terrifying and dangerous villain. also bonus bonus, the voice acting is top notch and his music cues are gorgeous!

    "Goodbye, Shen. I wish you happiness,
