Ghanaragamalika Thanam by Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer & Mysore Chowdiah | Shanmukhananda Sabha, 1964
Many would have come across Semmangudi's legendary ghanaragamalika thanam with Lalgudi from the Perambur Sangeetha Sabha concert in 1966 (Kedaragowla RTP), but this recording predates that and is probably the earliest recording we have of SSI's Ghanaragamalika Thanam. As much as I dislike Chowdiah's music, he has played well in this recording. Refer to the raga timestamps below:

Did Semmangudi sing these six taanam-s in one concert, and that too over a 17 minute stretch with nothing else in between? More doubts, did he start with R in some raaga (which one?), then T in these six segments, and then P(allavi) or keertana in which one? I have heard one raaga-malika by Ariyakudi, which he apparently sang quite often, which I think I followed a Todi taanam or shankarabharanam taanam. But never heard a taanam-maalikaa.

Y do you dislike chowdiah's music @ Shreeram ?
I don’t like the tone of his 7 string instrument. Moreover I think his approach to music lacks subtlety. He more often than not overplays and disrupts the flow of the vocalist during accompaniment. Many examples of this can be seen in his concerts.

@@bala94ms many artists from the past did not prefer him as the accompanist if I am not mistaken. They preferred younger artists (and hence their race to fame) like TNK, MSG, LGJ. Vishwanatha Iyer did not call Chowdiah ‘violin workshop’ without a reason. In my opinion (extrapolating from anecdotal evidence) many artists put up with the bully on stage because you had to be in Chow’s good books to get a chance anywhere in Karnataka (RSM, Parvathi to name a few)

That drop to the pallavi line 'Vadaraka', with the plain dhaivata is everything for me. Brinda's plain notes are ever so sharp and contain a lot of emotional depth. I couldn't find any other Kambhoji rendition by Brindamma apart from this padam, although Muktamma has sung Balavinave solo.
She has performed the Kambhoji Varnam (in the 1962 Trichy radio concert posted recently on Vaak) I have also heard her rendition of Evari Mata and Balavinave

Do BM usually sing the last charanam with the words 'rama rama i menito..'? I remember the pradarshini says in the vaggeyakara charitramu that those were the lines composed by kshetrayya when he returned after challenging the court to complete this padam. Also curious to know what is its meaning.
Brinda does not sing the 3rd Charanam. But here are the lyrics and meaning Charnam 3: bhAmarO sakunamulaDigiti muvvagOpAluDu vaccu nanucu kAminci nAdula galayu celula jUci karagi cinta nonditi rAma rAma I mEnitO nikavAni mOmu jUDa valenA modaTi ponde cAlu Meaning: I even asked the birds for omens if Muvva Gopala was coming. I grew weak, watching my girlfriends join their husbands for love. O god, do I ever have to see his face again with this body of mine? Once was enough! Just go away !

This is from a 3 hour live concert and NOT a radio concert. I would date this concert around 65/66, which would imply that he was in his late 50s

The phenomenal and unexpected take-offs of Pazhani and the Gambhiryam of Mani Iyer for an unparalleled GNB from the 1950s have indeed filled my heart to its fullest. There are places in the first recording Pazhani literally makes one sit up with his manodharmam. No words to describe those masterstrokes. Top class!!

Semmangudi has sung Swathi Thirunal’s Shambo Sathatham in this ragam . He announces the ragam name and adds “ Idhu Darbar llamal kaanadavum illalmal oru ragam . Good compilation and good observation about Darbar .
The legendary Lalgudi sir has delineated the Alapana for us so clearly SRGMPMDNS- SNSDPMGMRS is the clear cut arohana avarohana ; anyhow, pl refer to the Dikshitar’s composition for a slightly varied version of
@@vidyamsvidya7112 I would humbly suggest that the avarohana ending should perhaps be PMRGMRS - both GNB and Lalgudi have rendered it strictly like this in the virutham .
Also , the vrutham has a pronounced DNSDP motif a la Sahana
