I was told about Carnatic music by my yoga guru one chettiar before I actually heard any And then the first concert I heard, which was really nice was a budding young singer the son of a Brahman priest, from a village near Thillai Chidambaram but it’s when I heard concerts such as this, which I got on Cassett it back in USA after my first trip to India, 1978, that I fell madly in love, It’s almost as if SSI and MMI at their best are two completely different planets in the Carnatic music, solar system or universe, Ss is Mars and Mm is Venus there is so much gravity and fire in Ss and so much otherworldly beauty in Mm Just a non expert barely educated impressionistic response
This is a masterclass, stuck with me since the time I first listened to this epic 4.5 hour marathon concert. The 'ayyo's he lets out are truly ethereal, adds a lot of value experientially, the master is almost guiding us through this exposition!
Could you please point out 2-3 timestamps where we can hear the 'ayyo's? And one more request to all the uploaders. Please mention a few details of the concert, if and when available. Based on a comment here that MSG is on the violin, it looks like this is a 1960 concert at Krishna Gana Sabha, uploaded in full on Raju Asokan's youtube channel.
@@aueee99 And here (czcams.com/video/uZHVSP4ky2Y/video.html), one of the greatest Bhairavi renditions ever, on par with his Amba Kamakshi in 1974, Semmangudi's head keeps dancing with the beats more than was usual with him. He is rarely this animated. Between 20:30 and 20:45, he nods appreciates on some beats at TNK's accompaniment. At one point, as he is about to sneeze in his handkerchief, the camera moves discreetly away. He needed his snuff a few times, and he was 80 anyway, when the human brain slows down a lot. I was quite tickled to listen to Mallikarjun Mansur in Pune on 1992-04-12 when he was 81, just recovered from cancer, and exactly 5 months from his death on 1992-09-12. But it was more in the spirit of a waning master, singing to offer his tribute to Bhaskar-buwa Bakhale, 70 years after Bakhale's death. In Semmangudi's case, he was giving commanding performances even when he was 88.
Out of the world Neraval and swaram, MSG sir on Violin, Mirudangam by Ramabadran sr
