Upgrading and Riding My New Transition Spur All Country Bike
Recently I purchased an NX Build of the Transition Spur non UDH model. Transition recently updated the Transition Spur to allow UDH and therefore SRAM's Transmission drivetrain. It was a hefty price jump to go to that model, I already had a nice wheelset, carbon cranks, nice brakes, spare cassette, so decided to buy the NX build with the intentions of upgrading it. #bikingroots, #transitionbikes #transitionspur
So before I even rode it stock, wheelset came off, brakes came off, crankset, cassette, chain, shifter, grips, I think that was it. Since this video I also changed out the bars to some oneup carbon bars and an industry nine stem.
Shave about 2lbs off the bike which wasn't too bad. It would have been nice to get it a little lighter but without spending a lot on lighter carbon wheels, suspension, and cassette, this will be fine for now.
My first ride on the Spur was awesome! Riding a bike roughly 5lbs lighter than what you've been used to does make a difference. In addition the way that it puts the power down and its overall efficiency makes a big difference on our flat Houston trails.
While it felt light and fast, I felt like I could jump it (as much as I jump which isn't much) without fear of the frame breaking. I did bottom out once on one of the drops so I'll need to add some PSI to my rear shock before I ride here again but other than that, no complaints and can't wait to ride it again soon!
If you are local the Houston, come check out my Spur at our shop and throw a leg over it and take it for a spin! If you don't live in Houston but are still interested, head over to transition.com and order your Spur today!

I finally bought a Transition Spur! It’s been on my radar for a while now but we haven’t been a Transition dealer for very long so I was leaning towards this or the Smuggler but decided to go the lighter/shorter travel bike since I think it will be great for the Houston area. Not sure if I’d take it to any bike parks but at the same time, I’m old and not necessarily doing anything crazy anymore...

If you didn’t see the first video, go back a few videos and this one will make more sense. In summary, I was recently reunited after 16 years with my mountain bike from college. do you ship to Russia?
Can this bike with-hold smaller jumps and drops.
Yes it can. It is considered a trail bike and can hold its own especially with the front and rear thru axles. As far as new ones, we are down to only 1 unfortunately. A new model is rumored to be coming sometime in the future but I do not have any details on that right now
Whats the average range with that battery?
30-50 miles is the estimate but that depends on a lot of things like your weight, your terrain, what assist level you are in. I am probably going to buy one for myself and can give some better data soon (at least for where and how I ride)
Hi BikingRoots - I'm from Johannesburg, South Africa, and have been looking for Marin Alpine carbon 2 frame. Does your store ship overseas?
Thanks for reaching out from South Africa! Unfortunately we do not ship overseas, sorry... I'm trying to think who might. What size frame are you looking for?
@@BikingRoots thanks for the reply. I’m looking for a size small (I’m 167cm tall). Happy to pay the Aramex shipping costs if this is a way for shipping it. Do you have an email which we can correspond on? Thanks Jason
Evan, how are you? Not sure if you remember me from highschool or not. I am getting my GT lts 3 back this week and started looking at restoration videos. After watching yours for a while , I was like, this guy looks familiar! Hope all is well!!
Hey man! Oh my goodness, no way! Right when I saw your name, I was like, "that name sounds familiar" then I saw your comment. Ha, no way, crazy... Even more crazy that you are apparently restoring an LTS! That's awesome. How long have you had yours? Where are you living these days? Hope all is going well
what does the bike weight now?
Right around 28 I believe so shave off about 2 lbs. My carbon wheels aren’t the lightest (they are more trail oriented than XC). My fork as well is on the heavier side compared to some lighter forks but for me it feels great! So much lighter and faster than the enduro bikes I’ve been riding and used to over the last 5 years
What is the travel on this rear shock?
130mm of rear travel
@@BikingRoots Thank you because it was almost impossible to find that info on official website so appreciated, thank you
@@interceptor7905 Yeah no problem. I know it can get a bit confusing with shock travel. Usually most brands list the travel with the frame, then they give the eye to eye length and the stroke specs under rear shock but don’t list travel because the numbers along with the frame design = rear wheel travel. Hope that makes sense, more technical than fork travel.
I just ordered an orange/blue 27.5 model today. Happy fella here.
That's awesome! Congrats! Can't wait for you to get it and get to riding! Where are you located?
@@BikingRoots New England….Connecticut to be exact.

@@BikingRoots Thanks. Thank you for the vid as well. Cheers.
Are the tires tubless ready?
No they are not unfortunately. Wire bead. Rims are not taped either. You could tape them and attempt a ghetto tubeless setup with existing tires (but results vary). Or wear them out then buy tubeless or just buy some tubeless now and be done with it (if that’s your goal)

1:29 if you've earned that money and have your finances in order you should never have to to consult with anyone on your purchases. Enjoy your life and buy the bike you want.
I guess it depends what agreements you have ahead of time with each other on big purchases! For many people an ebike is a pretty big purchase so I'd say most like to at least be given a heads up but again it depends on where you are at financially and making sure you are both on the same page! For me, once my wife got into biking and saw the differences in components and why some bikes cost more and how they ride compared to lesser bikes, she gets it now and understands my purchases on bikes much better than before.

Any bike under 2k is kinda junk or at least come with wack specs
These days as higher end bikes are on sale at closer to the $2k mark, I can see where if you spend a bit more, you can get a better bike. Which specs in particular on this one do you think are wack?
@@BikingRoots well a lot of lower and bikes come with sram SX ,micro shift , in avid mechanical disks. I just picked up izzo core 1 for 1900 and seams to be a good price n spec. Pike base , select + rear shock. Sx drivetrain. Crank brother wheels , sram g2 brakes

First run Spur owner here with the SID, XO1 build. To tackle the steep, rocky, rooty trails here in the PNW, I made a few changes. Upgraded to Code RSC brakes, 180mm rear rotor, 35 degree rise bars, and DHR II tires front and back. I dont care about weight and needed to beef it up a bit. I have many miles on this setup and over the past year I've been riding this over my Sentinel. Enjoy!
Thanks for sharing. Wow, that's impressive that you ride it more than your Sentinel! Especially in the PNW. I've had codes before and they work well, good call. I've heard beefier tires are needed up there! Thanks for sharing and glad to hear you are enjoying it so much. I look forward to my time with mine. Take care
What the different between a san quinten 1 2023 model as apose to a 2024?
Good question. No difference between 2023 and 2024. Marin is actually doing away with model years which will take a bit to get used to, but they will just go to generations not yearly changes or updates.
@@BikingRoots that's sounds much better 👌🇭🇲
Marin bikes are just fantastic. I bought the Bobcat 3 and I LOVE IT!!!
Awesome! Congrats on the purchase! Glad you are enjoying it so much. To more bobcat memories!
Very nice! Great overview. Would have considered if I didn’t already have a Fuel EXe. Looks very sleek, with great geo. Love the nimbleness of the lightweight e-MTBs!
Thanks for the comment. Nice, I like the Fuel EXe and have a couple friends with them. I like the display it has on the top tube which gives you all your data. Yes glad to see there are more lightweight emtbs on the market now. Take care
So is that a straight neck? Isn’t that a lot harder to find forks for vs a more modern tapered neck?
yes you are limited but at least it has quick release front axles so the straight steerer forks like the Rockshox Judy or Recon or Manitou Markhor are straight steerer w/ qr axles so a direct swap. If someone already has or wants a tapered higher end fork, usually they have boost thru axles, so that would require them to have to install a lower cup adapter and a new wheel with thru axle.
The Spur is a fantastic bike, I live in the UK and have had mine for a year and a half now in the original powder black that I still think is my favourite colour. It was custom built with SID Ultimates, Shimano XT, Hope brakes, One up dropper and bars and some Hunt carbon wheels. Weight is just under 27lbs. The bike has been ideal for my riding that is pretty varied from rocky loose terrain to smoother trails. What I love about it is that it is so versatile it really is the one do it all the bike I was after replacing my longer travel Orange five and a Whyte hardtail. I would say it’s easily the best mountain bike I have ever owned. Fast, capable and comfortable to ride. I have just returned from a two week riding holiday in the Yorkshire Dales and it was brilliant. My only gripe with bike is the paint is pretty thin and is easily damaged so definitely have some protection on it and just be careful when not riding it.
Thanks for commenting from the UK! Sweet custom build on your Spur! Glad to hear you've had such a good time on it over the last year and a half and that it is your do it all bike. I bet riding in the UK is amazingly pretty. Yeah I hear ya on the paint, it does seem to be a bit fragile so we shall see how it holds up to me riding it. Thanks for your comment and for sharing!
Gorgeous bike!! I think it’s cool you can change out bike parts to make it what you want. I’m all for that! 🙌
Thanks, yep it is pretty. Yeah, thankfully bikes are pretty modular these days so with a few exceptions, you can build and try different parts and go back and forth. In the end, most bike manufacturers are just frame builders and they all use similar parts for their bikes
Sweet ride! My spur was a beast. If you upgrade that rear shock, I'd highly recommend the Ohlins TTX2. HOLY SMOKE that was a good upgrade. I also ran a 130 pike with a hc97 damper upgrade. That was a fun bike. You will enjoy your time on it!
Thanks for sharing! Hmm, I'll keep that Ohlins in mind. I've never run Ohlins (usually out of my price range!) but have heard great things. Pike would be cool. Thanks for the tips and for sharing. Take care!
Nice build!
Thanks! Since the video I did end up changing the bars to carbon and a new stem. Only 2 rides on it thus far! Need to ride more
Nice Build!
@@brettm.1115 thanks, you should build one
Why not just buy the frame and put on what you want? Buying a new bike and taking off a lot of parts makes zero sense.
So many reasons. Color, deals, sometimes you get it then Just decide after a few rides you want or find better components. My main problem is always framesets don't come in the same colors as the built ones.
@bhcrox, you stated in the description that you didn't ride it stock. So, how can you really justify swapping parts?
@@CJGrand1 it's not my post. I was just commenting on why I've done the same thing with a new bike. When you start getting into having multiple bikes. Parts just end up on different builds. It's fun if you like to tinker and turn wrench. If you look a lot of times a full bike is only a few hundred more then a frameset and you get more parts! 😉
@@bhcroxsorry, I didn't realize it was not someone from the video. 😂 You are correct though.
Yes, normally I would agree with you and do a frame up build with my parts on it which I've done many times in the past. This time was a bit different. 1) they no longer sold the old frame and color by itself, only the new one and the price for me to buy it even at dealer price was less than a complete NX build 2) Even at my cost, suspension isn't cheap, so I was probably going to spend $500 or so for a fork, the NX build had a Fox 34 (rhythm) but still fine with grip damper. 3) If I didn't use the wheelset or brakes (which is why I didn't even ride it stock) I could sell the wheelset, brakes, crankset, cassette as "new-take off" and often do to customers in my shop that busted a wheel, want new brakes, cranks, etc. The parts go into my supply to use on another build or re-sell to those that need it and want to save money over new. 3) I'm doing my own labor or having my guys do it if they are bored so I have all the resources and tools to do it quick and easy and it is fun for me. That being said, yes I know it doesn't make a lot of sense but for me this time it did! Take care
Spur owners, how have you enjoyed your bike and what upgrades if any have you done?
I love high pivot norcos, I think many other bikes have mid pivot ie the session and comencial sorry for spelling errors. I won’t a range or a aurum . Ross and jean 🇬🇧. Thanks for video buddy.👌👌🇬🇧🤘🤘
thanks for the comment and sharing your love for high pivot Norcos! Yeah, I need to get on one on the trail to see how it compares to my forbidden I owned. Hopefully soon! Take care
Pretty nice, I'd be too eager to ride it, screw the video 😂 I had a streak of freeride and DH full suspension bikes in the last decades, but now some short travel trailbikes are so capable the line is getting blurry, even XC is at it 😂
Ha! I know right, yes finally I've been on a couple rides with it after my upgrades and it is way fun... video coming soon on that. Yes, even short travel bikes can do a lot more than the old freeride and DH bikes of old! These days bikes are pretty incredible compared to what I started out on. Have fun on the trails
I have this exact bike. I really like it. Accelerates super fast. I Upgraded the entire drive train to X01 and the wheels. Wish it had UDH but for the sale price it’s hard to pass up.
Thanks for sharing! Awesome you have it. Yes, I noticed on my first 2 rides now that it does accelerate much more quickly than my previous bikes. Good call on the x01. In the next video I'll show what I upgraded. Yeah, UDH would be nice, but yeah couldn't justify the expense just to go UDH. AXS GX works well for me
I am very interested in this bike. I hope more reviews come out soon with some range resting.
Nice! Glad you are interested in it. Yeah, if I end up getting one for myself/the shop I can do some range testing. Stay tuned
Thanks. I was able to give a S4 size a parking lot test over the weekend. I was able to try all four power modes going up a small punchy hill. The motor felt good. It was quieter than my Bosch CX, and the bike with Chester pedals weighed 46lbs. That is 9 lbs. lighter than my Rail, so range is currently my only hesitation.
@@khodges3333 oh nice! That's good you could test one out in person. Nice to hear that feedback. Yeah range is a question. I guess in theory, smaller/lighter, doesn't need as much juice to power you around so should be similar but not sure yet
I really like the look of this one
Glad you like it! Yeah they did a good job i think on it.
Who is intrigued with the new Norco Fluid VLT EMTB?! Would you buy one? Who has one and what are your thoughts so far?

How does the Marin 3 compare to the Marin 4. Looking at both but unsure as to which one
Thanks for the question. We did another video a year or so ago comparing the 3 at the shop (if that helps). In summary though, unless you are in love with one of the bobcat 3 colors, I'd go to the 4. Everything is identical basically minus the drivetrain. So for $100 you get a 1x9 drivetrain with a clutch derailleur... so single chain ring up front, big cassette in the back. This will lighten up your bike a bit, make shifting easier, and be quieter and stronger if you intend on using it a good amount off road. Good luck!
Do you have that up at the shop? I want to come look at it super bad.
Yessir! Come on by!
Thank you for not getting another “Cheater bike”
Ha! Well… possibly soon. Haven’t decided yet
I love how this bike looks. Very clean design and I love bikes where the top tube continues to the back in a straight line.
thanks for the comment! Yeah, agreed, it is a looker and yes it does give it a nice clean look when the top tube transitions nicely to the seat tube. I’ve had some kind of goofy looking bikes over the years so it’s nice to have something clean and more simple! Take care
Are you faster than Julio on that bike?
Hands down… he is slow
There ain't no motor on that thing. 😁
Ha! Not this one… possibly coming soon though 😀
What's all country?
I guess they preferred that term over “down country” basically meaning it works everywhere. Isn’t cross country or trail
Who owns a Transition Spur? If so, how long have you had it and how has it been? If not, who’s interested in one?! Looking forward to some fun adventures on mine
I have a Riftzone 3 27.5” and love the metallic charcoal gray and black
oh right on, congrats! Yeah, it looks pretty good, thanks
@@BikingRoots thanks I have a 2022 model and I hope my seat tube don’t crack :(
@@waldowsxxghostxx8577 Haven’t had any seat tube cracking that I’ve seen. A couple top tubes on XL bikes with really tall guys and also a good amount of chain stays (under warranty), so watch the chain stay right where it curves into the bottom shell by the chain ring.
@@BikingRoots what are you saying about the chainstay I got a visual I have my chainstay protector wrapped up in lizard skin propylene with Velcro then zipped tied it so their or their following the linkage connects to the bb ? What should I look out for?
@@waldowsxxghostxx8577 If you follow your chainstay protector towards your crank you will get to a weld, then it indents inwards towards another weld. That section right there is where sometimes you may develop a crack. Just keep an eye on it. Most haven't had issues but we've done some warranties in the past. Hope it helps
Is the front fork an air or coil fork?
comes with a Rockshox Recon air fork
i want to see the fork service :D
Ha ok sounds good. I just found a video the other day with a guy showing how to do it so I may be able to save it. Stay tuned
none, all too noisy for me
Ha, no shame in that. Onyx hubs would be for you then
