  • For 2023 Marin redesigned their complete Rift Zone line of trail bikes. Included in that re-design was the smaller rift zone for the young people out there. #bikingroots, #marinriftzone26, #marinbikes
    They offer the Rift Zone Jr/26 in 24” and 26” versions. Wheels are interchangeable between the 2 sizes so if your kiddo outgrows the 24” you can buy a 26” wheelset and keep them going longer. The Rift Zone is usually for the 8-12 year olds or so depending on height.
    For 2023 The Rift Zone Jr frame gets a slacker head tube angle (by a degree), a steeper seat tube angle (by 7 degrees), internal brake line routing, UDH derailleur hanger, and some other new features.

    Love the new colors! Is it a big deal to change out the cranks? Can someone DIY that or do they need to bring it to a shop? What is the price look like?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  Před rokem +1

      Not a huge deal to change out IF you can find some small cranks. Historically it has been very difficult to source shorter cranks for kids but it seems to be getting better. You can DIY but you’d need a few different tools to take them out so you’d have to weigh that into your price. Cranks usually cost anywhere from $90-150 depending on brand and weight

    Hey champ. Awesome. Just a quick question, I have the 22 model for my daughter in the 26” , just wondering what size dropper you installed on the old one?
    Cheers

      Thanks for the question. So we installed a crankbrothers highline 3 100mm dropper on my son’s bike. It sticks up above a bit (because of the frame design) so not a lot of drop but works for him. If I did it again, I’d probably go with a pnw rainier which has travel adjust so you may be able to get it a little under 100mm (if needed). lowest they sell is a 125mm but it has pretty short insertion. KS I’ve heard also make a pretty short insertion 100mm dropper but haven’t tried one out in a while or on the RZ jr. Hope it helps, good luck!

    Hi there, thanks for the video. Any chance you can weigh these new rigs? Interested to see how they compare to the previous model.

      Hello, thanks for the question. Sorry, we forgot to weigh them when we did the video. I will get them weighed as soon as I can get my son’s back up here and comment back here when I have it. Stay tuned

      Here are the weights. 2023 RZ Jr 26 stock w/ DMR v6 pedals 32.85 pounds. My son's (or previous gen) w/ stamp 1 pedals and a crankbrother highline dropper post, maxxis minnion tubeless setup, 31.65 pounds. Surprises me a little bit but the stock non tubeless vee tires are pretty heavy. Also the longer cranks on the new one probably factor in a little too. Good luck!

      @@BikingRoots great thank you! It does surprisingly have quite a bit of weight on it! It would be interesting to see how much could be dropped with a light wheelset and tires.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  Před rokem

      @@MajorClod Yeah, wheelset and tires would help. Also the crankset is pretty heavy and the 51t sunrace cassette is pretty heavy as well.

    Thx a lot for this video! As it happened, next month both those bikes (Marin RF Junior 2023 & Norco Fluid 24 2023) will be available in dealership in my home town, Cracow, Poland. Hard to choose one for my 8 y.o. son... Do You know if 100mm dropper post insert fits all length to the seat tube of this new Marin? Or it needs to be a little bit up, to let the steering through this hole You marked? Thanks in advance! Merry Christmas! P

      Thanks for the comment and congrats on having some sweet options coming next month! We haven’t received an ETA for the new Fluid 24 yet but the 2021 that we have is still pretty sweet. I’m not sure if a 100mm dropper will fit all the way. I can try it out in a few days (well probably after Christmas) and let you know. Thanks, Merry Christmas to you!

      @@BikingRoots Thank You for an answer. I was rather asking about fitting a dropper post to Marin Rift Zone, cause in Norco Fluid it is already included as a standard equipment in stock version. Most of 100mm droppers has insert about 190-205mm. I wonder if you put it totally down the seat tube of this Marin, the steering is above or below this hole on the back of seat tube You pointed on the video to put the cable inside?
      Btw. It is amazing that we live in a global village. I contemplate the best choice of first full suspension bike for my son somewhere in the middle of Europe, and incidentally I found a video from a man, who has exactly those bikes in his store on the other side of the world... Maybe some day our boys will meet each other somewhere on the trails around the world 💪
      Merry Christmas once again! ✌️

      @@piotrzegarmistrz1120 Thanks for your reply and sorry I did not clarify my answer very well. I meant to say that we have not tested a dropper yet on the new rift zone jr so I’m not sure on the insertion yet. When we reopen though I will measure it and let you know! Yes, it is amazing to connect with people in different parts of the world! Yeah that would be cool to some how ride together! Thanks again and Merry Christmas

      @@piotrzegarmistrz1120 Hello! Sorry for the delay! So we measured the Marin Rift Zone Jr 26 and from the top of the seat tube down to the cable exit hole (a little bit above since the cable has to bend), it is just under 7” . We measured a crank brothers highline 3 100mm dropper and it is 8 3/4” long so the collar of the dropper would stick up a little bit from the top of the seat tube. If I remember right, KS might make a shorter insertion 100mm dropper but I can’t remember. Hope it helps!

      We actually have not put a dropper on any new ones yet so not sure what size will be best. On my son's bike we went with a crankbrother highline 3 100mm of travel.
