  • Bike was just released, so full details being confirmed
    The Optic Gen 2 Optic has been out for a few years now but won a lot of awards and praise as a super fun short travel trail bike that fit somewhere next to the Fluid line from Norco at 140/125mm of travel. It seems to be designed for those that want the benefits of a shorter travel bike but with the advantages and smoothness that comes from the High Pivot design traditionally found on their bigger travel bike park bikes.
    We just got our first one in last week and had a chance to check it out for a little bit. Per usual Norco, build quality is top notch. We looked at the C2 version that we ordered and have a C2 MX (Mixed Wheel/Mullet) version on the way in purple which we are excited about.
    Norco changed their sizing for 2024 to S specific sizing, so S1-S5. I'm 5'8 so fit right in the middle of S2-S3 which is interesting but gives me the chance to make a decision on more reach or shorter more maneuverable bike.
    The C2 spec will runs $6999 but you get full carbon frame, SRAM GX transmission or T-type, Nice mixture of Rockshox and Fox for your suspension and capable SRAM Code brakes.

      @@Filip-ki1yr Sorry! Yeah it looks pretty good and I'm curious how it feels on the trail. Don't be sad though, yours is still sweet and a lighter design. The new one is cool but a tad heavier than the last design with that high pivot. Thanks for the comment

      Those who need high pivots won’t be looking at short travel and those who want a short travel trail bike won’t be looking for a 33+ lbs bike that will pedal and climb like an enduro bike.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  Před 3 měsíci

      @@tombeck129 Ha! Valid point. I guess we will see what happens. My guess/hope is that it pedals and climbs better than an enduro bike.

      @tombeck129 Před 3 měsíci

      @@BikingRoots I was exaggerating a bit so I agree that it will pedal better than an enduro. 😀 But when you have bikes like the new Spur at 27-28lbs, it is hard to justify the weight of the Optic for a short travel trail bike. Still, for those focused on descending the Optic may be the ticket!

    How does it ride when you skip the idler? I think it's good that the chain doesn't go through the chain stay.
    But it'd be nice to not have to lube a chain on longer rides.
    Can it be setup like the old optic and ride well? (for epic riding holidays)

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  Před 4 měsíci

      No clue, but I wouldn’t skip the idler since its part of the high pivot design and without it you would have a ton of pedal kickback. From my experience on my Forbidden, you do not have to lube a chain on a long ride! Just normal lubing for me even with the idler. If you do not want the idler but same travel, they make the Fluid with various carbon and alloy builds

    • @doddsyist
      @doddsyist Před 3 měsíci

      @@BikingRoots thanks, interesting that reviews from the likes of pink bike suggest taking lube on long rides to keep it quiet. I find this weird because most lubes are supposed to be used post ride so the wax can dry which minimizes the possibility of grit sticking to the drive train (which also makes it noisy).
      I'm watching with curiosity to see how many they sell.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  Před 3 měsíci

      @@doddsyist Ha, yes I heard that too which I found very odd since they are supposed to be the experts! Nothing against them, but maybe they just had to find something to say against it, who knows. I would never take lube on a normal ride with me to re-apply while on the trail. You are correct, you need to let it dry or it will soak up all the crap on the trail! To me, high pivot bikes just make a bit more noise than normal bikes with the idler pulley, I got used to mine pretty quick and it didn’t bother me and instead loved the feel of it and how well planted it felt through technical trails.

      Our S3 C2 w/out pedals and not setup tubeless came in at 33.5. Not light but that’s not really the goal of the high pivot. With some lighter wheels and tires and crankset and some other bits, you could probably get it into 31 lb range.

    Looks unnecessarily complicated and heavy. I’ll bet the alloy version weighs close to 40#. That’s a boat anchor of a trail bike.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  Před 3 měsíci

      Valid point. I guess we will see how people respond to it and if the high pivot is worth the extra weight. I didn’t mind it on my forbidden. For some it may not be a compromise they want to make and there are other designs out there. The alloy probably won’t be that heavy, my guess would be around the 36lb range as our alloy sight that we also did a video on came in at 37 (has more travel though so a bit heavier & DD rear tire)
