Zoom F3 v PodTrak P4: Preamp Geekery
zhlédnutí 357Před rokem
Way too much time on my hands....tried to measure the preamp response of Zoom F3 and P4 using the sE Electronics V7 (extended range dynamic) into a splitter cable to send an identical signal into each recorder. Normalised both signals, then measured the frequency response using FabFilter Pro Q3. There is probably a lot of problems with this method, but let me know if you can you hear a differen...

    I have a question. I was recently gifted this microphone X1S to use it for recording podcasts. So in this case I am sitting down and would like to have the microphone in front of me on the table. But somehow I am not able to find a standard to hold the microphone, not even on the website of se electronics. Do you maybe have a recommendation or advice?

      There's the RØDE DS1 or you could just get cheap boom arm - both ideal for on a table. I think the arm is better since the table stand is more susceptible to knocks on the table, you just need to be careful :D

    Just putting a simple DMX Plug (which is a XLR plug with a 12 Ohm resistor on it) on the end of the cable, instead of whatever microphone would be more conclusive of the noise of the preamp / mic combination, because it would remove any room noise from the equation. Granted, there’s a difference in impedance of about 30 Ohms, but since the thermal noise of both, the 120 Ohms Resistor and the SM7B is well below the EIN of any preamp you will usually find on the market, it shouldn’t even matter, as the preamp will always be louder. The easiest way to have a consistent noise measurement, is to first set the gain on both devices to give you as close as possible of a signal on your SM7B, then plug in the DMX Plug instead and record the noise. And even in theory, if the resistor had the same frequency response as the SM7B, we would talk about a noise difference of less than 1dB, that a SM7B would be louder. Nonetheless, the noise of the the preamp/microphone combo - more often than not - is quieter than the room you’re recording in. Also the SM7B somehow rejecting room noise is - for the most part - a myth. If you use each microphone on the same distance and set the gain high enough for each microphone to reach the same signal level, the frequency response and pickup pattern will have a much higher impact, than the build of whatever microphone will ever have.

    Excellent! I wish someone would do this preamp comparison with a Zoom F3 and Tascam X6 ... I've been on the fence between these because I am not sure how often I'd use built in mics and people say the F3 sounds better but realistically I wonder how much better exactly

    • @thedarksidemic
      @thedarksidemic Před 2 měsíci

      Never tried the Tascam, it’s probably fine. I think we’re at a stage now where the quality of gear is so high, the focus is on application and decision making. Having said that I love my GAP pre73 - it just adds a bit of softness and warmth. I’m pretty sure few people on earth will hear the difference except from me. But I love that.

    Excellent review all around. As a fellow Scot, having lived in Australia for most of my (very long) life, I love the accent. Reminds me of my youth listening to my parents friends, but that aside, your voice works really well for the mic tests. I own a Dynacaster and always enjoy listening to the results others get using it. This is the best collection of useful comparisons I've heard here on youtube. Great job. All the best, Neil.

      The NT1a was the first mic I ever bought alongside the M3 when i started Uni, in 1996 😱 - it is a very over boosted high end, sounds very metallic and picks up every mouth noise. Having said that I loved it when I was 17 (the innocence of youth!) capsule change might be worth it for you or just look at something else - those PRoar mics sound awesome for the money.

  • @mudeth
    @mudeth Před 2 měsíci

    Thanks for doing these. I don't know if it's confirmation bias, but i do feel that the P4 sounds more brittle. At around 0:12 in the 'eh' sound when you say 'sending' for example. I felt this in your other video comparing the two as well. Almost like the preamp isn't reacting smoothly to transients. Again, could be confirmation bias. I wonder if I could pick it out in a blind test! Great channel, very interesting content, and I love the quotes you choose.

    Just received a 2nd hand MCE 85 in mind condition with the post today, great Mic for crisp and clear voice recording. I would say that it is a very underestimated specialized Pro-Tool, glad I found one for a fraction of what it was originally sold for. The V7 would be the most common one to use for singing, although many use the v7x for more low end and change the headbasket to avoid plosives. Very clean in terms of self noise. Check out videos by Anton Browne who does singing demo on both mics. 😀

    • @thedarksidemic
      @thedarksidemic Před 5 měsíci

      @@user-yc3pt3om1d so theoretically a dynamic mic will have no self noise, but the noise you hear will be generated by your preamp, not the mic. because dynamics typically need a lot of gain to reach good level this is where noise is introduced. So on my V7x here i give it about 50db of gain on my AA Zen Go (decent preamps) for spoken word (im not a loud talker!). Singing will need way less than that. At 55db I hear very slight preamp hiss - its really good, for singing it will be even better. So what preamp do you have ? This is key question for using a dynamic.

    I can see why this is a mic you either love or hate. It doesn't sound like other mics, so it sounds "wrong" to people who expect the same. It seems to have a pretty flat response that extends much further into the low frequencies than other mics, which usually roll-off sharply below 100-120Hz. You are dead right that mic placement is key to using this thing, as its proximity effect seems to extend much further. I've heard it sound absolutely awful on an acoustic guitar, and I think it's because they put it in the same place they always do with other mics, so the low end drowns out everything. I saw another review where they tested it on an acoustic guitar, but from further away, and it sounded much better. The Element is currently heavily discounted where I am, so I'm thinking of getting it for my new home studio setup. It seems more versatile than other mics in its (discounted) price range.

    • @thedarksidemic
      @thedarksidemic Před 7 měsíci

      Yep I think it’s all about mic placement and forgetting what you traditionally know to be the way of doing things. It’s incredibly quiet too, I’m not a musician, but you can see a lot of uses for it in a recording setting.

      Is it good to record outdoor elements or better get shotgun mic for that? Is the CM4 still good if your room is untreated for sound? • @thedarksidemic
      @thedarksidemic Před 7 měsíci

      I think you would need extra good wind protection on the cm4 for outside. Not impossible but the capsule is right and the front. For me CM4 is a better sound for more neutral recording, the SE8 is much brighter and crisper, both are are excellent. But if you are in Malaysia you may want to consider the 3U Audio Warbler 127 pencil condenser with the cardioid capsule. Transformer coupled, has that zing to it. He ships out of Hong Kong.

      The first one I got had to be returned, it didn’t work. The second is fine but it takes a few seconds for everything to settle once phantom is engaged, longer than other mics, if you listen when you turn phantom on, it sounds like it’s booting up and the output volume gradually increases. Once it’s on it’s fine not had any problems with it. But if buying second hand I would test both of them beforehand.

    Have owned modern akg 414 and several neumann tlm mics. Currently own at4040, jz bh2, and Warbler mk1. Have loaned a u87ai some time back. The Warbler Mk1 has a vintage grain and smoothness that the modern transformerless mics don't have. Capsule and transformer both give vocals nice saturation. Especially paired with a Neve style pre. Doing rock and indie music. The transformerless mics are great for clarity but can sound hard and too dry on vocals. Unless the acoustics and voice are fantastic to begin with. Warbler is the closest thing to a u87 that I have tried. Maybe a bit cloudy in comparison. But getting this vibe for a fraction of the price is fantastic. I would describe it as 'mid range thickness'.

      Thanks I’ve never had the chance to try a U87, but what a brilliant contribution to the thread, thanks so much!

    I would buy a capsule from microphone-parts, who knows what you are really getting from a random aliexpress seller!

    Thanks for the review! Two small things - It might help search results if you change your spelling from Sennhesier to -> Sennheiser. And also, I've never heard a Scot pronouce Sine wave as Cinee wave. Excellent! Going to start using that.

    The Cad E100SX sounds very much like the original if you switch the high pass filter on. I have used both and At the moment I am using the E100sx as a voiceover microphone, and I love the sound.

    Have you seen any sightings of the e40 on sale in the UK? I've become interested in supercardiod mics for vocal uses, and given that the e50 is a nicely balanced cardioid, I'm thinking the e40 might also be useful. Of course, I shouldn't be thinking along these lines, as my sE4400a condensers get pretty good results in what sE calls hypercardioid but from the polar plot looks more like supercardiod to me. The proximity at my usual 'spread hand plus one fist' is a touch fierce and requires EQ though...

      @@thedarksidemic I see that now - it didn't turn up for me earlier. It sounds reasonably promising, though so far I think I've mainly heard it used by generally harsher-voiced mic demonstrators. Something that concerns me is the lack of a frequency response curve. I find a curve useful - but I appreciate that companies who publish curves for inexpensive models may get uninformed negative comment.

    I am very surprised you did not mention anything about the biggest difference between these two mics. M201TG is a humbucker. That translate into an EMF hum rejecting noise cancelling quiet as a mouse pro tool. The choice is all yours.

    Nice comparison. But the beybey now retails for like 400 bucks. 😅 That happens a lot with stuff like this. Good videos though keep up the good work. 😊
