    Astonished.
    What's next, a GZ47 but tube + Sennheiser Hd800s?
You are awesome man, love you.

The GZ251 sounds fab; more natural and clear than my Warbler IV, I suspect. Or maybe it just really suits your voice. I'd better go and play with the Warbler IV again...
I remember seeing radio soundies using headphones with distinctive orange muffs years ago. Finally, I know what they were and why they were using them!

Yeah it is very beefy but more in the high end than my warbler MK1 but I still need to do a back to back. There’s a bit of saturation there that’s really nice. And I’m a sucker for everything retro, I should be locked up!

@@thedarksidemic Lol! I don't know whether this is considered bad manners (delete this message if it is), but having been interrupted in a household chore I thought I'd dash off a little comparison that might interest you. (It's still going up as I write.)

The Yaxi pads look nice. I've used Sennheiser HD 414 pads on PortPros, I assume they're pretty similar. One benefit of PortaPros is that they've been measured a million times so finding frequency responses to base your corrective EQ filters on is easy.

Yeah the consensus from a few headphone gurus is they are transformed with a bit of EQ, I’ll need to give it a go. The response does seem fairly consistent from different sources. Someone commented on my Instagram that VE pads are meant to be even better, but I can’t find them anywhere, the yaxis are very comfortable though.

@@thedarksidemic They really are. Properly EQed all headphones sound about the same, it is called an equalizer for good reason. :-) There's a little gotcha if you want to use non-stock pads though, most of the measurements you can find online use the stock pads and since custom ones change the sound (even if it is for the better) the EQ filters won't be a perfect match anymore. I didn't expect to find measurements with the Yaxi pads online but turns out they're out there so I'd definitely give it a go.

Good point, and that's one of my factors when buying pretty much anything - how easy is it to find useful information on [whatever it is]...

Found this searching for videos about the 3U GZ251; it sounds great!
I was hoping to find a comparison between a Telefunken ELAM 251 and the GZ251, but I guess that's a long shot.

    • @thedarksidemic

There are a few example out there but none that I could find, I’ve kinda held off doing a full review of this cos I have nothing that’s really comparable to this. I’ll probably do a quick one comparing it to the warbler MK1 which might be interesting for people to compare the two options and price points (ideally the mkiv would be closer though). But I love these mics, they’re not ultra bright and sharp, but slightly darker and smoother - I don’t think you can get better for this sort of money.

@@thedarksidemic I'd definitely be interested in a comparison between the GZ251 and any of the other 3U mics. I've been on the fence about 3U mics for years.

I’m just not digging 3u’s sound at all for some reason… I know some or all of warm audio mics use their capsules…. But it’s definitely the capsules I hear and I’m not liking it, they sound to “whooley” or too smooth that it just sounds sorta boring but yet you can hear vocals resonating off the grill which is super annoying , dunno if any others hear it… but I heard it in all the warm audio mics I’ve tried and I hear it on gearspace samples for 3U mics
