Saw this one on sale for $50 today. I wonder how much the disappointment from many that the CAD e100sx wasn’t just an updated e100s turned people off from anything CAD for a bit. Seems silly, given that the sx doesn’t seem bad at all, just different, less bright. I’ve heard the e50 before and thought it sounded solid, but wondered if my ears betrayed me due to no one else finding it interesting. Great work on the comparisons here. Always a great pleasure to see your videos arrive on my feed.

Yeah it’s the product placement strategy I find odd. From what I can tell is the 100sx is much more veiled / flatter than the much sought after E100s that everyone loves. Nothing wrong with that but I’d say that sound is a much more niche market than the E100s. So for me there’s a glaring gap In their lineup that could potentially be the most profitable.
If you look at the CAD website some really good products are surrounded by what looks to me like utter trash, or products that have one production cycle and are then discontinued. That devalues the good stuff and dents consumer confidence in the brand. IMO they need a complete rebrand (looks dated and ‘cheap’ at the moment), a slimmed down portfolio of products that focus on ‘audio heritage’ and craft. Get rid of all the cheap gimmicky shit that looks like it belongs on Wish. Then they’d be back in the game.

The Cad E100SX sounds very much like the original if you switch the high pass filter on. I have used both and At the moment I am using the E100sx as a voiceover microphone, and I love the sound.

Very interesting and surprising review. The E50 sounds very good, although I was surprised how well Bayerdynamic performed in this competition of condenser microphones.

Yeah the Beyerdynamic is crazy smooth and extended, incredible for a dynamic.

@@thedarksidemic I really like my old M201 NCS. I bought both cheap second hand, and both work well. And yes, I use them with sm81 foam windshield thingies.

  • @theglobalzrecordingproject

I did a nine mic comparison with the e50 and it held its own quite nicely and seemed to outperform some surprising mics above its weight class on voice. I only have two criticisms, and they are small-ish. The e50 may sound a tiny bit thin for some applications. The bigger issue I have with it is the shock mount. The general design is quite nice. However, if you intend to use this mic at a severe angle or upside down, you will have to really crank down on the thumbscrews to ensure the mic does not slip out of the mount. Over time, I can see this being a point of failure due to metal fatigue. Just something to be aware of. All-in-all though, a nice mic. Also, from the little I have heard, the CAD e40 sounds nice as well. I do agree that CAD could do a better job of marketing their mics.

Yeah I have my shockmount upside down on my boom arm. I like it but I do wonder if it will last. But yeah, considering the cost, it’s always on sale, it really is a nice mic.

Hmmm I acquired mine for $50, and find it a good value for that price. I disagree, however, it is as "dark" as you make it sound. I find it is much brighter on the high end, and it picks up much more ambient noise from the venue (room) than other condenser microphones I own, and I have several from a Behringer B1 to a Shure KSM44 and lots more in between. It is far more open, airy and bright you you indicate - which is not a bad thing, just saying I have a different take on how it sounds in my studio. Still, very solid construction, good shock mount that looks kinda cool, and surely the best chance you will have to get a full size 34mm capsule for a mere $50 - and even less than $100 which is likely a final street price, higher than the sale price I acquired mine. So ... in my view it sounds better than you make it sound ! Not being critical - just MY take on it. Thanks for yours. JT

Have you seen any sightings of the e40 on sale in the UK? I've become interested in supercardiod mics for vocal uses, and given that the e50 is a nicely balanced cardioid, I'm thinking the e40 might also be useful.
Of course, I shouldn't be thinking along these lines, as my sE4400a condensers get pretty good results in what sE calls hypercardioid but from the polar plot looks more like supercardiod to me. The proximity at my usual 'spread hand plus one fist' is a touch fierce and requires EQ though...

@@thedarksidemic I see that now - it didn't turn up for me earlier.
It sounds reasonably promising, though so far I think I've mainly heard it used by generally harsher-voiced mic demonstrators.
Something that concerns me is the lack of a frequency response curve. I find a curve useful - but I appreciate that companies who publish curves for inexpensive models may get uninformed negative comment.

I have the E100SX and I actually like this one quite well in comparison. I find the E100SX a bit darker than this one. Based on what I've heard about the E100S (now discontinued), the E100S is just a tad brighter and clearer than the E100SX. The E50 here has what seems like a similar sound to what I might have expected with the E100S. I do wish it was super-cardioid (like the E100SX is) so it would reject room noise. I love this comparison you've done -- very useful!

As for me it sounds really close to ksm 32 here... or I need to change my headphones. Also it seems like the 416 picked up more room sound than the CAD...
Anyway, thank you for the great review! The beyer is definitely fits your voice the best, because of the room issues :)
