    Just got a pair of Primo EM158's and XCM6035's which are apparently equivalent to the Panasonic WM-61A and are still in production.

    I really like the approach you're taking with these videos. The production is excellent, they're informative and a little bit different without being gimmicky. I recently bought a Pluggy mic from micbooster, which is an EM272 built into an extended XLR plug. I've only made a couple of recordings with it, but so far I'm impressed. BTW did you take any special precautions when you were soldering the capsules? I've read that they're susceptible to damage from excessive heat.

      Thanks. Yes it’s barebones production ;) I can’t stand graphic intros on any YT video and if I filmed myself, it would take 10 times as long! Yes the pluggy mic is great, I think the XLR version will use some small circuit board in the XLR to convert 48v to 5v for the capsule. Mic booster sell the parts to make your own pluggy but as far as I can tell the AliExpress headbasket, clip and foam is the same for £2. For soldering, I’m no expert but a couple of things really help me, 1. Tinning the ends of the wires really helps it take to the solder points much faster. And 2. Little bit of flux helps as well. I use a small tip on my soldering iron (which is a cheap Amazon one) and I find I have to clean it with wire wool after each solder to get it working best.

    If you could make a double lav with the Pui and the Primo, I think you might end up with a really full range sounding mic setup.

      That’s a good idea, I think mic booster sell cables like that for that purpose. They are close in sensitivity too so it might work quite well.

    Hi, great video, great content, great execution!
    I've read on many online discussions people mentioning the fact that the face of the primo electret should sit flush to (or even a little proud of) the front of the housing. Do you think the quality of the primo could be further improved by not having it so recessed in this ali "case"?

    • @thedarksidemic
      @thedarksidemic Před 2 lety +1

      Hi thanks! , I guess you could have protruding from the case but then you wouldn’t be able to screw the the lid on, I have it as close to the front as I can, but I didn’t notice a huge difference in and out of the case. The Pui from what I can tell is more affected by the way it is mounted. Some electrets need air or space at the back. In my tests the pui frequency response isn’t as extended as they claim it is, it rolls off much earlier than the primo does. IMO the primo is significantly better and worth the extra money. It’s a decent replacement in a Rode Video Micro albeit an Omni.

    Can these be made into stereo and used with USB-C on a android smartphone? I would like to make a mic that looks like the Sony ECMLV1 and Olympus ME-51S but has the EM272 and USB-C connection where you can just plug it onto your phone and then record video with a nice enhanced mic for lots of ambient pickup, is this possible?

    • @thedarksidemic
      @thedarksidemic Před rokem +1

      I guess it would be possible, but in terms of the housing it might be difficult. One approach would be to try and find an existing usb-c mic on AliExpress then change the capsules. But the Em272 capsule are a bit bigger, so might not fit in existing T-mic designs. You might be able to use the wiring / part of the body and and enclose the capsules with Sugru mouldable glue. Alternatively, The rode Ai micro would be the easiest way to do it but a bit more cumbersome with the cables, not ideal for handheld recording. Saramonic do this : saramonicuk.com/sr-c2003-short-usb-type-c-male-to-gold-plated-female-3-5mm-trs-adapter-cable/ which might work to connect a T-mic although what I’ve read android phones are a bit fussy when it comes to usb audio adapters.

      @@thedarksidemic Thank you so much for the detail information, I will try the cable first and if that doesn't work will try the rode. Keep up the great work your channel 👍🏻

    Hello - just watched your video with much interest. I'm up for making my own lavalier mic using a 10mm EM272M capsule. But the Ali Express mic is no longer available. Its not obvious which mic could be purchased as an alternative. If you have an idea maybe you could update the links. May thanks in advance p.s. or maybe you have a lav mic / parts you'd sell ?

      Ive just had a look, can't find the aliexpress one either - i know mic booster in the UK sells them - micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/248-clippy-mic-enclosure-type-b.html - but i will keep looking ;)

    Interesting, the AOM 5024-HD-R seems to have highest sensitivity and high SNR. Is it correct, that this capsule is suitable to collect low audio volumes, respectively collect audio from larger distances ? Let´s say use it as a mic in 1-2 m distance for web meetings?

    • @thedarksidemic
      @thedarksidemic Před 2 lety +1

      yep the Pui might be a good contender for a boundary style diy mic - low noise and sensitive - its flatter than the EM272 which might favour a more distant pick-up. However, would it sound good from 1-2m? I don't think anything sounds good from that distance, from a spoken word perspective for recording, but it may be adequate (and cheap) for making out what people are saying in a roundtable situation.
