The Lotus Esprit - The Best Classic SUPERCAR Money Can Buy! Full Review & Test Drive Video. AMAZING!
The Lotus Esprit was easily the best James Bond car, probably... The DB5 was the original but Bonds white Esprit S1 trumped the classic Aston with its aquatic abilities. The Lotus Esprit doesn't belong underwater though, no, it belongs were it shines... On the tarmac.
In this video Tim takes us on a trip down memory lane to see what all the fuss was about and take this brilliant British Supercar out for a spin.
As Lotus's flagship model for almost three decades, the Esprit was launched in 1976 and remained in production for over a quarter of a century. It received regular refreshment along the way, principally to its original Giorgetto Giugiaro design and, from 1987, to its later Peter Stevens incarnation.
Production of Esprit ran from 1976 to 2004, lasted for an incredible 28 years. Moreover, it rarely showed its age as continuous development kept it updated and competitive. Apart from long life, Esprit was also the most significant Lotus because it lifted the British company to the same league of Ferrari and Porsche, washing away its previous kit-car image.
Having experimented mid-engined technology with Europa, Colin Chapman determined to take a more ambitious approach. The target was clearly to build a rival to Porsche 911 and Ferrari Dino, but it should beat both in handling and at the same time deliver a stunning message in the same way as contemporary supercars like Lamborghini Countach, Maserati Bora or De Tomaso Pantera. To achieve the latter goal, Giorgetto Giugiaro was called to submit a proposal. The on-form Italian design maestro did not disappoint Chapman. He created a sensational design that combined Countach-style wedge profile with simple lines and perfect proportion. It looked every bit like a supercar.
Unfortunately, the supercar look was not backed up by the engine. Lotus originally planned to offer two engines, i.e. an entry-level straight-four and a flagship V8. However, due to financial reasons the V8 did not materialize (until 20 years later), leaving the sole powerplant to be the four-pot engine. The 1973cc unit, designed and built by Lotus itself, was truly state of the art. It had all-alloy construction, twin-cam and 4 valves per cylinder to produce some 160 horsepower, remarkable for its size. Nevertheless, compared with the 3-liter V8 or six-cylinder engines of Ferrari 308GTB (255hp), Lamborghini Urraco P300 (265hp) and Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 (200hp), it was way less powerful, let alone De Tomaso Pantera with its 350hp American V8. The four-cylinder engine would be the achilles' heel of Esprit for many more years.
But two things saved the game. First, the Esprit weighed less than 1 ton. Colin Chapman's trademark backbone chassis and glass-fiber body shell, as well as the small engine helped the car undercutting its rivals by 200-300 kg. This mean Esprit was pretty accelerative until its lightweight advantage gave way to aerodynamic drag at higher speed. With a 0-60 mph time ranging from 7.5 to the low 8-seconds range, it still failed to match its more powerful rivals, so it took the second thing to save the game - a lower price tag. The original Esprit was priced at £8,000, £2,000 to £5,000 less than its rivals. This justified for its performance loss.
Like all other Lotuses, Esprit had first class handling thanks to its lightweight and excellent chassis balance. Its chassis was wide and low built. Its lightweight engine was mounted longitudinally behind the cockpit and in front of the 5-speed transaxle (which came from Citroen SM). To lower center of gravity, the engine inclined to the left by 45 degrees. It was mounted on a tubular rear subframe together with the rear suspensions which consisted of semi-trailing arms and lower transverse links. Up front, double wishbones provided optimum wheel control. Relatively soft springs brought excellent ride in the tradition of Lotus. Traction, roadholding and braking were all superb. The unassisted steering was quick and precise, if not as sensitive as Elan's. The same went for handling, which induced more understeer than previous Lotuses. In return, you get a more forgiving behaviour at the limit.
Esprit was not very good at being an everyday transport. Its lowness implied a relatively cramped cabin and its floor-mounted seats were difficult to get into. Its fast angle windscreen might look spectacular outside, but it also resulted in poor visibility and serious light reflection. On the run, refinement was hampered by excessive wind noise and engine boom. Luggage space was in short supply as the front was occupied by the spare wheel, leaving a small boot behind the engine. Moreover, Lotus' build quality was some way behind its German and Italian rivals. Many of these flaws would never be sorted out. Like many supercars of the 1970s and early 1980s, Lotus Esprit was not easy to live with.

In the family we had a second hand smart for2 and the IQ. These are not comparable. The IQ is a real car with a lot of options. It has assisted turning, comfort, high manouverability, a trunk where you can pack suitcases, comfy camping gear for a week, etc. The price comes from the fact that Toyota managed to put all this technology in such a small car. The IQ is wayy better than the smart (older version at least). I could buy a Mazeratti but I stick with my 2008 IQ with abroken AC. People (girls especially) find it ugly but once they try in the city, they just don't understand how to get back to something else. I use my mother's audi sport A1 from time to time and it is nice to have a stronger engine but the trade off is just not worth it. It is hard to explain.

Thanks Billy. Everything was designed around making the car light. There was no carbon fibre in them days, so designers had to get creative and more importantly technical. lots of new innovations were discovered as a result. The knowledge from winning lots a championships on the track transferred to the cars for the road. Inevitable this early pioneering start meant that sometimes things broke and back then smaller engines just did not have enough power. Although Colin Chapman managed to wring out over 210 BHP from a 2.2 4 cylinder. Large American V8 engines of this era were agricultural in comparison. Happy to help Panther. The F Type is a fantastic car and definitely a better looking car than the Merc. You’re certainly very lucky to have these choices as your first car. If you can afford a nice car while you’re young then just go for it, you might regret it when children come along and a sports car no longer suits the family. So your choice depends on what you want to get out of it. If you want something to look good then the Jaguar is purrrfect. If you want a car for performance and handling and fancy taking your new toy to a track day then the choices might change slightly. The Jag will do but you would be better off getting an early 5.0R Coupe RWD from around 2014-2015. A Porsche Cayman GT4 is also a great handling car. Lotus Exige V6 would also be a great choice. Good luck and enjoy.

I nearly bought one but ended up buying a Smart diesel instead which I've owned for the last 13 years, my choice was based on the Smart being more economical in diesel format as at the time fuel prices went through the roof and it was automatic, as someone who drives for a living i prefer automatic as I hate driving with a passion, I don't regret my choice as two seats is more than enough for one person, 150000 miles on, mostly motorway driving, making a 60 mile round trip daily for work, for a city car it works well for me, that said, I would certainly buy an IQ, I love the design, don't know what the automatic is like but that would probably be my choice, it's not about speed or the ability to overtake, for me it's about low running costs, which incidentally, the IQ was only slightly more expensive on servicing and it incurred road tax whereas the Smart doesn't. I like these small cars, my older classic car favourites are the Mini and the Fiat 500

02:37 ..Owner lifts the bonnet and says "This car has been upgraded" In his opinion anyway 02:38 ... Brian walks away and says ... No thank you "This car has been bastardised" and then walks away Yes, I am well aware that these only had around 110 BHP (ish) from an 8 valve 2.0 Litre carb-fed "Pinto" engine. Factory standard is ALWAYS best with these historic cars. Sometimes less IS MORE! "Factory bog standard" examples of these cars fetch powerful £££££/$$$$ ... Ones that have been "Bastardised" fetch less. If I wanted a "Fast car" ...I would buy a BMW M3 It is like when you see a Ford Escort RS Cosworths and some nob head has stuck naff bits of plastic on them from Halfords and "Lowered them" It is like "What the f++k have you done that for????????? Spent money making your car worth LESS ... Yes that is smart!

Owned a ‘94 Jaguar XJS Coupe, I6, always appreciated the styling of this car, especially in coupe version. Unfortunately I was too Jagged up at the time, with E-Type V12, neither being a daily driver and a young family. 10 yrs later the kids always said that the XJS was their favorite car we owned and liked driving in it. Regret selling, but at least I had the opportunity, they weren’t easiest vehicle to get in or out of, but once sat inside they were sooo comfortable. Once driver Las Vegas to Saint Paul, Minnesota in it, which was EPIC!

Sacco Bruno really did a job on these vehicles. His design is truly a timeless masterpiece. I will pick this car over many modern designs today, despite the passage of time. It is a rare thing to find a car that has been able to age so graciously without being ancient. These cars are a testament to Mercedes engineering and design. There are many people who will gladly buy a new one today if they could.

I agree, "modern" designs are an eyesore (to put it nicely). I really don't understand what design aesthetic -- if any -- car manufacturers are going for nowadays. Tonka Toys? Transformers? Japanese Anime? No style, no elegance, no graceful lines or harmony whatsoever. Sacco did a fantastic job with the 190, as with the contemporary S-class. And yes, they certainly don't make them like this anymore -- particularly Mercedes, which is but a shadow of its former self! ☹ I drove a 1983 190D until the late 90s. As a Diesel, it was an abysmal performer and deafeningly loud on the Autobahn (where it was more of a navigational hazard). But it was also rock solid, very reliable, and efficient even by today's standards. Oh, and it _did_ have ABS, Tim! 😁 Now I drive a (petrol) C200 which has nearly TWICE the consumption and had teething issues when it left the factory (fixed under warranty). I really miss the 190's beefy steering wheel; the C-class oversteers too much for my taste.

No offence but you have to know how to drive little city cars to get decent performance out of them. You have to constantly drive on the gears, drop down early and keep the revs up. You can't rely on torque to overtake because there isn't any. You have to plan your overtakes and get the engine right on the edge of that sweet spot before you floor the throttle in a low gear. Time your gear changes and overtakes and they're fast enough. If you don't have power to overtake there's no need to overtake because you can't go faster than the car in front. I can easily keep pace with modern traffic, I'm fine on motorways up to 80mph and I don't drive faster than that anyway. No I can't go faster than a hot hatch or big diesel but so what? I actually prefer a tiny car with modest power because they're fun to drive. What's the point of having a 150 mph car that does 0-60 in 5 seconds on modern roads? And let's remember these are designed as city cars not long distance cruisers or performance vehicles so I don't think it's fair to criticise them for not being fast. That'd be like slagging off a kazoo because it doesn't sound like a grand piano. Hats of to Toyota for having the guts to offer such a distinctive and innovative car. I like it.

@@TheTimBushChannel The term 'better' is subjective. I have a colleague who drives a leased Mini Cooper. She's in agony if she drives more than half an hour in it and every pot hole, of which there are many in my town, feels like a crash landing on the moon. She had to wait outside hospital for 4 hours a while back when her daughter was having treatment. She said she couldn't sit in the Mini for long because the seat was causing her pain. I sat in it out of curiosity and the seat were like granite. This trend for sporty cars is ridiculous. To me a soft comfortable ride with less excitement is better than the rock hard seats, suspension and sporty characteristics of something like a Mini. I'd take that Toyota any day of the week over a Mini. And good luck when your Mini breaks down. Poorly engineered cars.
