Bonsai is a great , though I never managed to investigate it. Best wishes
Great video. Keep them coming
What species is that? Fantastic trunk!
Amazing trees, but where are the larches?
Hi, I'm writing from Italy. I had already commented on one of your videos on chojubai. I'm still waiting for a video where you explain how to grow chojubai all year round, pruning, defoliation, fertilization and if possible explain how to create clump style or tree from cuttings. I have two large ones and I constantly take cuttings, because in Italy it has been forbidden to import rosaceae. think I can't find a white chojubai anywhere. Thank you
That wagon is awesome! Love the adjustable height idea!
Hey Andrew, great informative videos, keep them coming. So what if your spring temps are in the mid to high 80s for the majority of spring? My solution has been setting up spring benches in full morning sun, with afternoon filtered sun. My concern with the immediate jump to the higher temps with newly repotted trees is the added stress this heat might put on them right out of the gate after repotting? Should it be a concern? PS I’m in coastal South Carolina.
Cây đẹp quá bạn ơi 👍✌️
Hello, has this beautiful JM been cut back already? This year, Mine in a grow box has exploded! (Didn't pinch) I'm worried about this year's root graft being shaded, do you get a second flush out of this maple? Thx, u for sharing.
❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for this info! I’m fairly new to bonsai and I have about 5-6 varieties of Acer, so I wasn’t sure what to do with all of them. Some more sensitive than others. I suppose I shouldn’t have to worry about burn until it’s closer into the summer time?
Not me watching this thinking about this little Japanese maple in full shade at my work…..let me save you lol
Sadly in the UK until a week ago we just had constant rain and almost no sun. 😢 At last the weather is getting better.
So we thought until this week back to winter ❄️
Great to see you back!
You had me at cute puppy!
You have got most beautiful helping hands for bonsai 🐾

Short and accurate! Very useful information for us. Welcome back Andrew! And I love your dogs!
Thank you, they're the garden mascots
Andrew, I would like to know if you can make a video about the nuances of the shade cloth, I will install mine this year because I feel a lot of environmental Changes in my location but I never use shades before and I little concerned about what to install how to put it and hoy to take off etc. :/ please help :/ Thank you for your time!
goldens. best dogs ever. nice trees too! thanks rakuyo
They definitely are, and great garden dogs too!
Great quick video on such an important topic of bonsai cultivation! Give those pups and extra pet for us!! 🙏🪴🍁 Would love to see another garden tour with your trees fully leafed out!
Great suggestion, will plan for that soon!
I agree great point. Keep up the great videos and tips

Thank you for this video! That is a very impressive maple. I was wondering if you work with Amur maples at all? It’s hard to find good examples of this species in bonsai culture online and I’d like to know if we should pinch the new growth like we do with Acer palmatum in the spring? Thanks again for all of the info you provide through your channel!
Yes, I have several and pinch them in the spring. I also defoliate them in the summer if they’re very vigorous
@@rakuyobonsai Thank you!
👍
🙏🏼
Useful knowledge! Do you need a caveat to say this doesn't apply for recently repotted trees? I thought the general approach was to help the tree to recover by positioning it in the shade for the first 6-8 weeks, if not more if you did heavier root work.
So long as the trees were repotted at the correct time (before or just at bud break) this advice still applies. I think he's talking about the best case for spring while temperatures are not yet super hot. You'll want to protect your deciduous trees for a week or two after major prune back of running branches later in spring or early summer, since you'll be exposing more delicate interior leaves. 🍁
Recently repotted trees need to be protected from wind, freeze and frost but sun isn’t an issue
@@rakuyobonsai interesting thank you!
Anyone doing bonsai with 2 x goldies gets my attention 🙂
They’re the best dogs!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful knowledge! Amazing maple! Peace from England :-)
Thanks for tuning in!
Great to see you Andrew and your wonderful trees. An excellent and helpful tip as usual. Here's an interesting take.. for trees in development (especially large pots to thicken trunks), would it make sense to start them off in shade to get larger leaves and then move them into full sun for the growing season? I know it sounds a bit whacky but I'm just going off the mantra from Ryan Neil that the leaves are the solar panels. So I wonder if larger leaves will help produce more top and bottom growth?
Even when growing it’s better to build in short internodes so you have more bud potential on the inner part of the tree when you cutback and start doing branch work
Hmmm, I guess low cost is relative. I’m guessing Peter is not giving these away. Peter is awesome and he certainly knows how to assess trees including knowledge of correct market values. It’s always a bit of a mystery how much trees cost or are worth. A bit of a taboo subject it seems. I think it’s a great exercise to learn how to properly assess a tree including an understanding of what is the potential and required time frame to finish the tree would be. I just heard Peter speak on this subject (and others) at the ABAS (Sacramebto club) monthly meeting. Based on that I’m guessing the price for the tree was $6000. Most bonsai growers tend to not bring up cost or prices. It is proper and appropriate. That said for those still learning(I guess that’s all of us) I think understanding the value of trees would be an important exercise. There are few to none in regard to actual pricing or values videos on CZcams. Personally I try to never miss a local auction because that is to date the best place for me to understand pricing, quality and desirability. Your video inspired me to buy a few of these maples from Mendocino maples, they were all crudely grafted but I will layer them once they get established. Unfortunately there is no movement in the trunk which is a challenge and a reminder of the importance of early selecting decisions. Thank you again, Mats
Good luck with your new maples!
This is my favorite species for bonsai
One of mine too!
I have a question i hope you can help answer. When you collect a birch yamadori and you successfully transfer it into a trainingpot or a wooden box, do you put it in full sun, or do you recomend shade for a while?
All deciduous trees at RAKUYO are in full sun in the spring, and then 50% shade cloth in the summer heat.
Great instructional video!
Glad it was helpful Vicki!
Would that pinching tool work good on azalea flowers also? Or beter stay with small Bud sciccors? A W E S O M E tree again!🌳
I usually use my fingers with a twisting motion to remove azalea flowers
Hi, excellent timing! I will be doing mine... may I suggest a video on pots? I remember your great interview with Nao but I can't find much good info on pots (what makes a good old pot in particular) anyway, could you recommend a book on Oriental pots with more than photos, size, maker? Beautiful tree/pot. Thank you.
The next one I have in editing is about pots, coming soon!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful winter Hazel, Andrew. I love the purple pot you have it paired with. Have you worked with many different cultivars?
Yes I've worked with a few and if they're the only thing you can find I wouldn't rule them out. However my two old ones are just regular Corylopsis spicata and I tend to prefer working with the straight species
I have but my two old ones are plain Corylopsis spicata and I usually find working with the straight species (with any plant) to be the most rewarding
@@rakuyobonsai thanks for the feedback! Love your channel!
Great video and wonderful tree. I’m developing some winter hazel from nursery stock at the moment and would love to see more as there is little available on this wonderful species.
We'll do some more winter hazel content this year, good luck with yours!
Thank you! Inspired me to chase one down.
Good luck with it! They're a treasure to have in the garden
What a gorgeous tree - the branch movement and cascading golden flowers are truly a work of art! What kind of light conditions does this species enjoy?
Full sun all day with 50% shade cloth during the summer
Thanks Andrew! Amazon information and amazing tree!
My pleasure!
where can you find winter hazel in OR?
Try John Eads at Left Coast Bonsai
nice tree. i had a vision you did a loblolly video around decandling time 😊🖖
Vision or wishful thinking? ;)
Amazing rock to complement the forest
Thanks
Absolutely love this
Cheers!
I have both Arakawa and Nishikigawa in my collection, the long internodes are a pain at times, I've tried holding right off with the fertiliser in late spring, a very challenging maple to grow. Great tutorial video, thank you :-)
They are definitely more tricky than a standard Japanese maple
What are your experiences with bark corking? I have an Arakawa and i noticed that about 5-6 year it starts to create the rough bark.
Bald cypress don't grow as flat tops in the south? Weird, I've seen hundreds of them when i lived in South Carolina. 🤔🤔😂
I didn't say they never grow like that, you definitely see hundreds of them but my point was more that you don't see millions of them
I see those knees on my Metasequoias all the time.
Would love to see more of them in bonsai bald cypress! They add a really nice feeling
Thanks for the video-- keep making them! I love seeing your nursery.
Thanks, planning on making more in that style
Another great video. I’m always seeing these huge bald cypress’s on Instagram, would love one myself but you just don’t get them this big/grown much in the UK. You got such amazing pieces of material. 👌
Thanks, try hard to source some special trees from all over North America
