- In this video Andrew shares some of the deciduous conifers at RAKUYO bonsai and discusses his plans for their development. Check out our new bald cypress bonsai, as well as a couple dawn redwoods showing a diversity of form. We're on the hunt to add more deciduous conifers to the garden to help provide more high-level education on the deciduous conifer group. We also introduce Birch, the newest member of the RAKUYO family!

Lovely trees Andrew. I love my deciduous conifers and have 2 group plantings planned for this spring. Nothing so big as your trees, but the scale is perfect for my needs. I would be honored if you watched along.

Bold statement about the bald cypress! But i agree. I have one in the coniferous style and prefer it... unless you go all out and denude almost all of the trunk apart from a couple of branches and then the flat top. That can be stunning.
Me too, would be nice to see more bald cypress in the style of which 99% of them grow

Nice, however I live in Florida and have seen some super old bald cypress swamps. Trust me they definitely tend to grow in the flat top form when really old. I like the flat top form but it will be cool to see other forms such as the more traditional conifer form you mentioned.
I spent 5 years living in Florida and know they can make a flat top form in nature, but in my experience it’s less than 1% of the cypress that I’ve encountered. I definitely respect that style but prefer the form of the 99%
@@rakuyobonsai Idk why I'm so triggered by your statement lol. First off, you said "in the Carolinas" not Florida. FL also has a lot of pond cypress which has a different growing habit than BC despite ppl waning to call them the same thing. BC definitely naturally grow into flat tops in SC. Having a preference of one over the other is fine, but making a blanket statement calling a natural form unnatural is misleading and incorrect. It's okay to have both. I have both. The conical form looks like any other conifer for the most part IMO. The flat top is what makes bald cypress unique.
That said, I look forward to seeing you create a conical form with natural taper and no gigantic wound on the back side of the tree. Most people that make conical forms with large trunks tend to desperately make sure that you only look at the tree from one specific angle.
@@Bonsai_Bentley I agree, I think most of the older cypress I've seen tend to be flat tops as well. I am 29 and have livd in Florida my whole life and have seen many massive old cypress flat tops. This tends to be much more common when they grow in close proximity also, maybe if an older cypress is isolated from others and has more sun exposure on more of the trunk it may lean towards a more conical form. However 80% of conical forms are just younger trees still.
@@BeesBonsai a form I've been toying with is a tree that's transitioning to a flat top. Basically a flat top with lots of lower lateral branching.
@@Bonsai_Bentley I like that, a nice way to break up the monotony and add some visual interest. I have a nice old collected baldy from around where Mary Madison collected. It has a natural flat top already but I also like the Idea of fostering some of the lower branching and buds. However, I have to be careful they don't run wild and sap the upper canopy's energy. After all, I guess bonsai is a great deal about balance.
The music is nice but i think it would be awesome if you recorded a little flute thing for the intro/outro. Great video!

Andrew , really love your work! Dawn Redwood"s triangular form for sure, but having spent my entire life in the swamps of the Carolinas practically all really mature Bald Cypress are flat tops, Please dont make it look like a Dawn Redwood.

I love your trees, and content. My only observation (and it's not a criticism) is that it's not relatable to most hobbyists as the trees you feature are normally goliaths. If you have 30 to 60cm trees perhaps that are attainable for most, and did a bit of content on them too it may help to grow the channel along with the monster trees 😊
Thanks for the observation, you’re totally right. Even though we enjoy big trees we have plenty of smaller ones around, will make a note to feature some more!

Bald cypress don't grow as flat tops in the south? Weird, I've seen hundreds of them when i lived in South Carolina. 🤔🤔😂
I didn't say they never grow like that, you definitely see hundreds of them but my point was more that you don't see millions of them
