This tree will be beautiful in the future. I was really inspired by your winter hazel at the Pacific Bonsai exhibition and I have been on the hunt for a starter winter hazel to develop since then.
Sometimes you have to make the mundane stuff fun! Good luck on your winter hazel search, I’ve seen them at garden centers from time to time

What kind of substrate are you using for this tree? I think Stewartias need a acidic ph
Always akadama and pumice, about 80% akadama and 20% pumice.
Do you use 100% kanuma in your stewartia soil?
No I don’t, the few dozen Stewartia we have in the garden are all in mostly akadama with some pumice or perlite to break it up
what about the stub on the main trunk????
Good catch, that one is a little too big to cut right now, we'll grab it during the growing season
