  • Andrew wasn't happy with how this birch looked in the last video ( • 3 Tips for Growing Bir... ) so we brought it in the studio here at RAKUYO bonsai to make some improvements.

    Its great seeing birch being used more as bonsai. I think its a overlooked tree. Thank you

    Great production and I love the wire through the drainage hole tip for greating another anchor point. Also fun seeing you take the time to display it at the end. All the best for 2024

    Great video Andrew. I find it's hard to look at my trees objectively. After I've had them awhile, I get stuck in a mantenance rut. Asking another person helps. Your (unintentional?) technique of using video sounds very effective to get a fresh perspective.

    great topic, I defiantly relate to this, (2d)ing the trees seems to really help. I noticed your birch clump is much more balanced and seems now to be moving from left to right instead of right to left.

    Nice video and awesome tree! Love the philosophical points about changes in perspective causing you to be aware of flaws in trees. One of the things I love about bonsai is how you can see these things in time and eventually make improvements. Always feels nice to set the tree in the right direction.
    I am curious if you think that small trunk on the right could have been moved with wiring the length of it, perhaps with something like 5mm. To me, it seems a bit straight along the length of it compared to the other trunks.
    I also noticed that John Eads is a proponent of aluminum wire. Makes me wonder if your shared teacher has similar feelings. I’ll definitely give the aluminum a shot and see if I notice in checking for wire bite.
    Looking forward to getting to meet you at the end of this month at the Shohin School seminar, as well as next month at a PSBA workshop!

    • @rakuyobonsai
      @rakuyobonsai  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, not everything needs to be done at once. Bonsai is a process not a before/after. Yes that trunk could be moved with a big wire, might have to explore that! Common practice among most bonsai pros is aluminum for deciduous, we kind of pioneered using silver wire to be able to see more clearly!

    • @Will.Schnicke
      @Will.Schnicke Před 7 měsíci

      Ah yes, meant to say he aluminum colored wire. I’ll be jeeping an eye on the tree I have with silver wire and seeing if I notice a difference. might pick up a few test rolls next time I see John.

    Great video, glad to see you doing more of them. I know making videos is time consuming, so thank you.
    I am no expert by any means and you are so you may have already thought of it and have a plan, but what what keeps catching my eye or bugging me as you said, is the small trunk on the right that you put a guy wire on. Seems very straight compared to the other trunks. I think a little bit of movement in it would be great. But I don't know you may plan to cut it back hard in the future to achieve that or it may be too thick to bend safely. Just my thoughts, thanks again, love your work.

    I love that this video is just normal styling work instead of the crazy insane transformations you usually see that don't really teach you anything. In this you go through every step of the process and explain exactly what you're thinking and why. Good to watch for all levels.
    If this was my tree I'd tip up the right side a bit more with that new front you choose, which would tilt the whole composition anticlockwise. In Ireland at least, Betula pendula in forests or groves will often form a long spindly understory canopy that goes in crazy directions at very low angles, almost like a snake leaping into the air. The trunk on the left is very reminiscent of those trees for me, and I would try to highlight that by placing the big trunk directly above it to evoke the shading that causes this. But I think that angle would make all the branches on the main trunk really odd, so that idea probably wouldn't work in reality haha
    Keep the birch videos coming!! Any videos, actually. I love seeing your collection in more detail than I can get on Instagram, and getting updates on your trees.

      Thanks Pedro for the suggestions, they're all fused at the base/nebari which limits a change in inclination in a major way, but might be nice to play with some minor adjustments next repotting!

    I missed this the first time around so a little late in commenting; the original configuration had the main trunk tilted a bit off vertical, which I thought was nice. Will you tip it a little to the right in the future?
