Really appreciate the focus on deciduous material, I’m a back yard grower in South Carolina and thrive on the information. Any chance that your tree is struggling from long term nutritional issues like the guys from Apical crop science talk about with Mirai? I’m fascinated by some of the science that they have uncovered. So much so that I’ve added crushed oyster shell to my bonsai mix as a minor component to see how it impacts my personal collection! Keep the material coming!
Glad to hear the videos are actually helping people! I'm quite doubtful it's related to nutritional issues, this just happens with old deciduous bonsai from time to time, especially shrubs. Keep us posted on your oyster shell experiment!
Great Video and a beautiful tree! I plan on doing a native Ilex, as soon as I find a good one, might have to start from a seedling. The video seemed very dark.
Wow, it does seem dark! I am still learning the best way to use my camera and do the color balancing. I maybe made the mistake of editing the video on full brightness rather than making it look good dark

Great video, thanks. I have a few japanese maples that seem a little weak but have read up-potting to a much larger pot isn’t the best thing to do as they like up-potting in increments. What’s your view please?
It's okay to up-pot something as long as the volume isn't too drastically increased. 10-20% is fine

Thank you for this video. I have a maple that is not doing so well. What soil mix do you use in the grow box? I have seen 2 different bottoms for grow boxes; wood with holes drilled it, and mesh. What type do you prefer?
I prefer solid bottom with lots of small holes, the tree in the video likely had 30 small holes
We use our typical akadama and pumice/perlite mix
Hi I got some winterberry plants to grow for shohin. I wanted to know how to prune the plants to have berries close to the trunk (obviously I also have a male plant). I wanted to know if in spring by pinching I can get fruit closer to the stem thanks Pietro from Italy
Hi Pietro, pinching in the spring can definitely create compact growth which yields fruit closer to the trunk!
