CUTTIES & BROOKIES | Solo Fly Fishing for Wild Trout in the Pacific Northwest Mountains
I recently headed out into the mountains near home to get in some solo time on one of my favorite local streams. It was mid-week which meant I had the place to myself. The weather was perfect and the trout were looking up at dry flies.
I nestled into a nice little riverside camp spot with the truck and Four Wheel Camper Fleet model for a night. I woke up, did some work, then hit the river.
I brought my Sage 1wt setup as this is perfect water for a smaller rod like that. I did manage to catch a pretty decent sized Cutthroat Trout which was pretty great. Later that day I headed upstream to fish the mountain meadow section of the river and to try to catch some Brook Trout.
All in all, the trip was really fun and a great way to spend a few random week days out in the woods, fishing and getting lost in my own head.

Thank you! Greatly appreciated. The bookies likely got there from one of the nearby reservoirs\lakes. Yeah that bigger cutty was a beautiful fish. It actually surprised me when it took the fly. I was expecting a fish like that in that particular spot. I was wishing I had grabbed my net and that my 6X line would hold.

This is basically how I taught myself to fly fish... pick a creek or stream on a map that hopefully is near a road and start walking. Sometimes it all comes together with some fish but either way, a sense of accomplishment is there at the end of the day for exploring a new area and spending time on the water. Great shots and narration as always!

Hitting up the Rogue Salmonfly hatch on Tuesday gonna try to float it if not I’ll be on the shore. Caught a couple nice cutties with the hopper dropper today on the Applegate. Gotta get you down to Southern Oregon sometime to make a video!

Nice video Sean, and great music as well. I’ve fished the Deschutes for over forty years with good friends, our nickname for it is the Stingy Bitch, but we keep coming back. I always tell people it’s about the river/location first, fishing second and catching third. This river haunts me like no other. Good luck on the next mission. Was out last weekend and it was work getting fish, because temps had dropped. Was still able to coax a good number of fish up to take a Yellow Sally or PMD though.

We had an epic time fishing a couple weeks ago. Didn’t throw the big bugs but we saw some around. We caught fish all day on dries and had an amazing day in that special river!

Greetings! Long time watcher, first time commenter here..... I can totally relate to this video. I like to fish the usual bigger rivers like the Deschutes, but I spend many a day during the season fishing a particular small creek in my area and I love it! Use my 3WT and usually any dry fly will work. Hardly ever catch anything larger than 6 or 7 inches (with an occasional 9 or10), but it's my Zen place. The sound of the creek, the solitude, the occasional wildlife and knowing that I'm in a special place (for me) makes a great day! Love watching your vids! Keep it up!
