Good part of this episode: The "evil" Kirk had necessary leadership and command qualities that the "good" Kirk lacked. It wasn't just black and white. The bad part: Didn't they have a *SHUTTLE CRAFT* on that ship???

It has been said that there are only about 6 or 7 original Star Trek ideas, the Transporter Malfunction being one of them - they all do variations on it. The other is probably the 'Shuttle Crash' idea, Galileo 7 being the original.

Apart from the two pilots The Cage (1964) and Where No Man Has Gone Before (1965), this episode was only the fifth episode filmed when season one production began in May of 1966. The Naked Time was filmed June 30-July 11th and in was in strong consideration to air first - since it introduced everyone and was a good showcase for ships’ operations - but it was deemed too confusing to introduce characters behaving strangely before we see how they behave normally, and also the ending with the time warp was such a mind-twister, they decided The Man Trap, with a simple monster of the week, would be a more relatable intro to the universe.

When this was filmed, plastic spray bottles were a relatively new thing. McCoy's spray bottle actually WOULD have seemed unusually futuristic to a 1960s audience. Before this, you would atomize liquids using a bottle with a rubber bulb.

Great reaction this is an excellent episode. I’m glad you enjoyed it but there’s one thing I forgot they didn’t have to transport to get them out. They have 10 shuttle crafts on board enterprise we could’ve sent shuttle crafts down to bring them back. They didn’t need. They didn’t need the transporter they risk losing limbs cause they didn’t use the shuttle crafts, actually the reason they didn’t use them is because this was early in the series and they hadn’t finished making the shuttlecraft set yet they didn’t use it but normally they’ll be 10 shuttlecraft on board the ship to go to info in case the transporter doesn’t function thanks for the fun until next time

Not really. The second is good. The 3-4 are… stretching. The 4th was really just trying. Not a great movie. Action is spot on but it’s getting on the Fast and Furious bandwagon… and the tv series is meh.

@@nazimelmardi In your humble opinion. "Stretching" means nothing without context. Neither does "not a great movie", especially when it's subjective. You need to look at what the movies are trying to convey and in what manner. Do they succeed? The fighting choreography is it's main selling point. The underground world supplies ample intrigue and the added characters progressive group dynamic. This has been evident as the chapters progressed. It's intrinsic nature is over the top by default so one should know what to expect.

    • @nazimelmardi

@@bemindful924 not “my opinion” they were dropping views strongly and ratings. For a good reason. The last one is not even close to the first. What’s the first’s appeal? Why did it work so hard? Do you know? Can you explain? If you can then you will understand why the last is not so good and I use “stretching”. The first had a specific atmosphere and old school feeling that worked. ☝️The simple straightforward solution went back to old days when the action movies were different, took some of their elements, improved it with martial art and that’s all. A very simple movie. They just had a great idea with that underground thing in the hotel and such. The sequel was great because it extended that. The others tho… the same trap as in the case of Fast and Furious. It worked until it was car racing on streets. The moment they started the super hero and spy bullsh… failed. Now where it is? In space. Literally. John Wick also moved from the base idea how it was made. The TV series moved back but it’s simply just cheap and weak stuff.

    • @bemindful924

@@nazimelmardi Please READ what I wrote. Im not involving the series here, strictly the movies. I would not bring up ratings to try to bolster a point you fail to make due to how your objectivity is replaced by sentiment. but if you do look at IMDB, you'd see that the ratings have been steady with Chapter 4 getting the highest rating. Again, I would not use this as ammo for my pov since it's far more effective to examine the quality of the movie's essence - something you acknowledge to be present. "a specific atmosphere and old school feeling that worked." is both vague and not even an argument due to how the following chapters expanded on the worldbuilding. It's more reasonable to say that it was.. more-of-the-same-but-better. With 'better' I refer to the added pressure and thus the despair, the opposition, the producion value and the creativity/training. You are of course free to believe what you want, but I made my point clear on why it's on par/better. I will leave you with a quote: *Fueled by the strong performance of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate's John Wick franchise has crossed the $1B mark at the worldwide box office. The Keanu Reeves-led series' total take to date now stands at $1,011,319,297 global. Of the quartet, Chapter 4 is the highest-grossing, with $425.3M and counting*

Scotty's reply to Kirk when they are stealing the Enterprise always gets me - "I'd be grateful, Admiral, if you'd give the word." That was Peter Preston's (Scotty's nephew) last question to Kirk before he died after Khan's initial attack on the Enterprise in Star Trek II. "Is the word given, Admiral?"

  • @margretrosenberg420

  • @margretrosenberg420

26:30 "Are they actors or are they true heroes after all?" Yes. They're actors, ordinary people caught up in an extraordinary situation that requires heroism, so they behave heroically. They're both. Next time you see a news report about someone who ran toward danger rather than away and managed to save lives by doing so, listen to the interviews with the hero. There's an extremely good chance that they'll say "Oh, I'm not a hero. I just did what anyone would do in that situation." To a certain extent they're correct; you never know how you'll react until you actually find yourself in that extraordinary situation, you may be more heroic than you think. An awful lot of people are.

  • @margretrosenberg420

Tony Shalhoub's character, Fred Kwan, is a caucasian actor who has locked himself into an Asian stage name, so he gets cast as Asian characters. (Think of David Carradine playing Kwai Chang Caine in _Kung Fu.)_ Did you notice how often he squints? This is meant to be a vain attempt to emulate the epicanthic fold. Tony decided to play Fred Kwan as a stoner. He was late for the transport up to the space station because he was busy at a vending machine, stocking up on snacks to feed his "munchies," and he snacks throughout the movie. This also explains his remarkably effective laid-back management style in Engineering.

  • @margretrosenberg420

This movie is an homage to _Star Trek_ and to _Trek_ fans, and many of us consider it to be the best _Star Trek_ movie ever made. Patrick Stewart avoided seeing _Galaxy Quest_ because he'd heard that it was a _Trek_ parody and he didn't want to see _Star Trek_ devalued, but Jonathan Frakes called and told him he had to see it and he should do so in a theater so he could see how the audience reacted. Sir Patrick loved it.

And yes, this was the *second* pilot that was shot. The first one, "The Cage", had an almost entirely different cast; Leonard Nimoy was the only character who carried through from the first pilot to the second, and then into the series, (Majel Barrett also came through to the main series, but played an entirely different character than she did in the 1st pilot.) The first pilot was rejected by the network, but the studio believed in the concept enough to risk spending money on a second one that would be more to the network's liking. Because it *is* a pilot, it does look different, because they re-used some of the sets (particularly the bridge) and costumes from the 1st pilot. The re-casting of the various roles was due to a variety of factors; some of the actors were no longer available due to having taken other roles elsewhere between pilots 1 and 2, some characters were changed due to the feedback from the network (they particularly disliked Majel Barrett's role as "Number One", Captain Pike's second-in-command), and the actor Jeffrey Hunter, who played Captain Pike in the 1st pilot, declined to return to the role for a second pilot. (Supposedly, he didn't want to be tied up doing a TV series, and wanted to be free to take movie roles instead. Some accounts claim that was more his wife's idea than his own; she felt he was worth a lot more than a weekly TV show would pay him... but I don't think that's ever been confirmed as such, so it's probably just one of those Hollywood rumors.) Strangely enough, this is the *only* episode in which that colorful "phaser rifle" ever appeared, although it was also used in some early promotional photos. For a long time, they thought the original prop had been lost, or had been disassembled and the bits re-used for something else, but a few years ago it turned up in the possession of the original prop-maker, Reuben Klamer, who had simply taken it home with him after Roddenberry decided that they weren't going to use it again. (Apparently, it was too "lethal-looking" for his liking.) Klamer put it up for auction, along with the original studio paperwork, in 2016, and it sold for $231,000. The new owner recently put it up for sale again in 2021, and it sold for $615,000.

4:20 "They stepped up the budget for this episode" -- Not really. What you're seeing are the "remastered" versions, where some of the original effects work has been enhanced or replaced by CGI. The series was remastered in 2006 for its 40th anniversary, with Michael and Denise Okuda (artists and designers on pretty much every Star Trek movie and TV series since "The Voyage Home" and Next Generation). As far as I know, pretty much all online-streaming and broadcast platforms use the remastered versions now; if you want to see the original F/X work, you need to get the 2009 Blu-Ray releases, which give you the choice between original F/X or remastered F/X.

4:30 "Detaching saucer section... they can do that?" Theoretically, the original-series Enterprise was supposed to be able to do it as well -- it's mentioned in Matt Jeffries' notes about the ship design he created -- but they never found a reason to do it on-screen, and it would've been prohibitively expensive to pull off, so they just never did it and the idea was pretty much forgotten about. 30:15 "Interesting choice for the 1st episode of a new show." Pilot episodes are always kind of odd that way. They have to deliver a *lot* of exposition, and introduce a whole cast of characters whose actors are still trying to work out the nuances of their roles and haven't quite developed a chemistry with each other yet, while still trying to tell a coherent story at the same time. Plus, 1st season TNG did have a lot of what TVtropes calls "Early-Installment Weirdness" going on. 🙂 (2nd season did too, at times, but the show was finding its footing by then.) That "introduce the cast" is one reason why *everyone* is getting significant screen time; as the show went on, the stories tended to focus more on a smaller number of characters at a time instead of the "make sure everyone has something important to do!" that characterized the first few episodes. 14:10 "They *also* have great video footage of it all!" That's just one of those "acceptable breaks from reality" that happens in TV and movies. 🙂 Oftentimes, they don't have the time or the budget (especially on a weekly TV show!) to re-shoot the scene from the kind of fixed, static angle that a real security camera would have, so they just re-use the footage they've already shot. 15:36 Having families aboard was one of Roddenberry's ideas to make the 24th-century Starfleet and its vessels less "militaristic" than the original series was. The justification, supposedly, was that as these exploratory starships went further and further out into the galaxy, the crew would be away from home for longer and longer periods, and the Galaxy-class ships were designed to be, in essence, a mobile starbase where the civilian families and support personnel would come along for the ride. 23:40 The phasers *are* the "phone things". 😀 The original series also had a smaller, more-compact "hand phaser" as well as the pistol type; you probably just haven't gotten far enough into TOS to have seen them used yet. The "hand" models are smaller and more easily concealed, but not as powerful as the pistol type. (There's also the phaser *rifle*, which TOS only used in one episode, but which shows up more frequently in the NextGen-era shows.) 30:15 -- "What happened to everyone in Farpoint?" You must've missed the part where they sent down an evacuation order telling everyone to leave the station, before they started feeding the energy beam to the creature.

Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy.

This movie has such a special place in my heart! As a lifelong Star Trek fan, it gets so much right about the show, the actors (William Shatner is notorious for being an early-movie Jason), and the fandom. I actually got into science and STEM *because* of Star Trek, and even though I'm disabled and the life of science is sadly out of my reach, I still love keeping up with new technology and developments because it makes me feel like that future isn't so far away.

Crying during a Godzilla was not on my 2024 bingo card...this is such a great film. If you liked this movie, you should also watch Shin Godzilla(2016). It's not as emotionally resonant as this movie, but it's still a really great movie too. And I will say that Godzilla is MUCH scarier in Shin Godzilla!

I like the new uniform! I'm actually currently playing this really great Star Trek video game right now called "Star Trek: Resurgence", in which the Tkon empire plays a significant role in the story. So it's ironic that you're watching this episode now! Also, the Ferengi were originally intended to be the new "big bad" of The Next Generation, like the Klingons were in the original series. Although that didn't really work out, since the Ferengi are rather goofy and not really intimidating at all. 😅 It's not until Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that the Ferengi get really fleshed out and become an actual interesting culture in their own right. (BTW I hope you plan to watch Deep Space Nine! It is a phenomenal series and my favorite Star Trek series by far!!)

I was 12, when I saw this in the theater. December 1991, baby! I was too young to piece everything together, so my young mind was genuinely surprised at how things unfolded. Though they did give away the secret of the cloaking and firing Bird of Prey in the trailer, with just the briefest of glimpses. That one, I did figure out beforehand. 🖖😀

Ah... First draft Ferengi. Good times... 😂. Not a great episode but not total garbage despite how annoying the Ferengi are. It's very mid tier TOS level so again, watchable but not standout. Once more... You gotta go through the famine of seasons one and two so you know what's going on during the feast of seasons three to seven.

Love this movie, also incorporates other sci fi shows. Space 1999(the aliens true form, Blake's 7 (last season ),babylon 5 reminiscent of the bear, along with Star trek influences 😊
