To give you an idea why Bones looks so old...
Star Trek The Undiscovered Country set in 2293.
Star Trek TNG Encounter At Farpoint set in 2364.
The TNG pilot came out in September 1987. DeForest Kelly died in 1999
Remember. Bones served on the NCC1701 and the NCC1701-A.
The Enteprise in TNG is the NCC1701-D. So there are two vessels you haven't seen yet.

Bones is old, because the stories of this Star Trek take place in the 24th century, aboard the Enterprise NCC 1701-D, more than 70 years after the last film, Star Trek VI, just remembering that Kirk's Enterprise was the NCC 1701 -A, That's why Doctor McCoy (Bones) is 137 years old, now an Admiral.

Woo, great to see another person start the TNG-era Trek journey. I would only caution to stay with just watching TOS and TNG for now, if you're doing concurrent series. Deep Space 9, the next series chronologically (and my personal favourite series) begins with immediate spoilers of an important part of TNG.
I hope you get to all of it eventually, and welcome!

The Next Generation is definitely more of an "ensemble" show, rather than focusing on two or three characters for the majority of episodes.
Oddly despite TNG being set 60-70 years after The Undiscovered Country, it was airing for quite a while before the fifth and sixth films were made.

Well, you're in for a journey. TOS ran for 3 seasons and 6 theatrical releases. TNG ran for 7 seasons and 4 theatrical releases. Stellar cast, BTW.... however, while the first two seasons aren't "bad" by any stretch, it's the 3rd season where it "finds its feet" and starts to get REALLY good. Jean Luc Picard is the captain, William Riker is first officer, Lt. Commander Data (pronounced "Day-Tuh") is second officer and an android. Tasha Yar is chief of security and her immediate subordinate is Worf, the Klingon. Dr. Beverly Crusher is chief medical officer, and Dianna Troi is ship's counselor, a half-human/half Betazoid with the ability to "sense" the feelings of other humanoid species. There are also other "regular" crew members whom you will learn along the way.
The Enterprise is a Galaxy Class starship hosting a crew of over 1000 people including crew members and their families. The ship is massive when compared to the original Constitution Class Enterprise.
The Federation and the Klingon Empire are now at peace, as predicted by the Organians from TOS.
Without spoilers, I think that about covers the background that was common knowledge when the series began airing. And yes, while I **AM** a huge Star Wars fan, I am also a big Star Trek fan, as well.

Dr. McCoy is about 70 years older than he was on the last Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. This is the Enterprise D and the last registration on his Enterprise was NCC-1701-A. There was an Enterprise B and C, so he managed to live to be 136 years old and counting. He was about 70 on his last movie. He is now touring the new Enterprise NCC-1701-D.

DeForest Kelley was 67 years old at the time wearing old age make up prosthetics this was even before of "Star Trek V: The Final Frontiet" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" were filmed, the Next Generation in the story takes place 98 years after the events of the Original Series and 70 something after the events of the films I to VI.

Even the original Enterprise can disconnect the saucer section, in absolute emergency. Seems that the saucer also had retractable legs for emergency planetary landing. Unlike the new Enterprise, the original cannot reattach the saucer independently (she can do it only with the assistance of a space dock, I guess). For money reasons, the procedure was never shown in the original series or in the movies, but there are sketches realized for Star Trek The Motion Picture that shows the entire thing.

But perhaps Q shows himself to be slightly more useful to humanity than, say, Apollo. The writers end up having fun with this trickster.

TNG for the first two seasons feels a lot like TOS and you'll see similarities in the two shows with plots and themes. Then in the third season of TNG the show gets a new head writer and develops its own identity. It takes about half a season but when it gets going it's like someone flipped a switch and pretty good storytelling with occasionally "excellent" episodes becomes excellent storytelling with the occasional "pretty good" episodes.

Another absolutely fun reaction! I enjoyed this very much! Don't get me wrong, TOS reruns, cartoons and movies were huge for me during my childhood, but I consider TNG to be *my* show, because I literally grew up with it: I can remember when I was 10 years old and shortly after Star Trek 4 became a huge hit, the announcement came out that in the fall of '87 there was going to be this new Star Trek series on TV! I was a little apprehensive when I heard that it wouldn't feature William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy, but as time went on and I read more articles in Starlog magazine about how the models and sets were being built, how the vis F/X were coming along and who the characters were going to be, the more excited I got! I remember the night watching the show as it premiered. I was in my final year of high schoo when the show ended. I was in college as the TNG movies came out. And all these years later, I recently finished watching the final season of Star Trek: Picard! This show is wonderful--the first 2 seasons have as many bad episodes as good ones, but it really hits its stride in season 3 and keeps getting better. Unlike TOS, which is mostly about the adventures of Kirk, Spock and McCoy, the strongest feature of this show are the character moments; practically every character gets a few episodes to really grow, with a couple exceptions. My favorite episodes are the ones about Data and Worf, but everyone is wonderful on this show and the most fun is seeing how much of a family they become throughout the years!
Picard is quite different from Kirk. Instead of embracing risk and diving into an adventure, this captain is a bit more thoughtful and measured, more of a thinker, philosopher, explorer and diplomat than an all-out adventurer. However, there will be times when, put to the test, Jean-Luc can and does take matters into his own hands. Even though he may seem a little stern (more than likely a result of the more militaristic mission of his previous command aboard the U.S.S. Stargazer), Picard eventually becomes an avuncular, fatherly figure to his crew. And his crew? They are absolutely Starfleet's best!
I hope this provides a little more info and context! 😊

4:30 "Detaching saucer section... they can do that?" Theoretically, the original-series Enterprise was supposed to be able to do it as well -- it's mentioned in Matt Jeffries' notes about the ship design he created -- but they never found a reason to do it on-screen, and it would've been prohibitively expensive to pull off, so they just never did it and the idea was pretty much forgotten about.
30:15 "Interesting choice for the 1st episode of a new show." Pilot episodes are always kind of odd that way. They have to deliver a *lot* of exposition, and introduce a whole cast of characters whose actors are still trying to work out the nuances of their roles and haven't quite developed a chemistry with each other yet, while still trying to tell a coherent story at the same time. Plus, 1st season TNG did have a lot of what TVtropes calls "Early-Installment Weirdness" going on. 🙂 (2nd season did too, at times, but the show was finding its footing by then.) That "introduce the cast" is one reason why *everyone* is getting significant screen time; as the show went on, the stories tended to focus more on a smaller number of characters at a time instead of the "make sure everyone has something important to do!" that characterized the first few episodes.
14:10 "They *also* have great video footage of it all!" That's just one of those "acceptable breaks from reality" that happens in TV and movies. 🙂 Oftentimes, they don't have the time or the budget (especially on a weekly TV show!) to re-shoot the scene from the kind of fixed, static angle that a real security camera would have, so they just re-use the footage they've already shot.
15:36 Having families aboard was one of Roddenberry's ideas to make the 24th-century Starfleet and its vessels less "militaristic" than the original series was. The justification, supposedly, was that as these exploratory starships went further and further out into the galaxy, the crew would be away from home for longer and longer periods, and the Galaxy-class ships were designed to be, in essence, a mobile starbase where the civilian families and support personnel would come along for the ride.
23:40 The phasers *are* the "phone things". 😀 The original series also had a smaller, more-compact "hand phaser" as well as the pistol type; you probably just haven't gotten far enough into TOS to have seen them used yet. The "hand" models are smaller and more easily concealed, but not as powerful as the pistol type. (There's also the phaser *rifle*, which TOS only used in one episode, but which shows up more frequently in the NextGen-era shows.)
30:15 -- "What happened to everyone in Farpoint?" You must've missed the part where they sent down an evacuation order telling everyone to leave the station, before they started feeding the energy beam to the creature.

Bro, I recommend watching the Star Trek television franchise in order of its airdate. So definitely start with the original series, first, then the animated Star Trek series (featuring the voice of the original cast, minus Walter Koenig, Chekov), and then Star Trek: The Next Generation, and so forth. My logical advice to you, sir.

  • @MAMoreno
    @MAMoreno Před 2 měsíci +1

I do really like the pilot, even if the Farpoint Station plot isn't the most compelling test of humanity's growth as a species. Season 1 often gets flack for not starting out as strong as the first season of the original series (and for falling short of TNG's quality from Season 3 onward), but as a 1980s spin-off/revival of a 1960s TV show, it's way above average. (The fair comparison is to shows like The New Leave It to Beaver and Mission: Impossible 1988.) And if you dismiss the first season entirely, the impact of some great episodes from later seasons (such as "Yesterday's Enterprise" from Season 3 or "All Good Things" from Season 7) is undermined.

I'm so happy to find another new Star Trek reactor!! Hoping you'l do all the series eventually, though as others have cautioned, you can't really dive into DS9 and Voyager just yet as there'll be spoilers galore for TNG. After you've finished TOS I would recommend going by air dates if you want to do these series in tandem. DS9 begins towards the end of TNG with an overlap of a couple of years.

Direct parallels to The Motion picture
Jean-Luc Picard is Kirk as an older commanding officer - Starfleet has stopped the Captain galavanting on dangerous planets and assigned that to his first officer
William Riker is Willard Deker the intended captain of the Enterprise until Admiral Kirk usurps command and demotes him to 1st officer - he gets away team (landing party ) duty
Deana Tori is Ilia - replacing hormones with empathy, she's a missingcharacter from TOS the ship's counsler.
Data is not really Spock he's the Phase II pre-TMP Spock replacement Xon, a full Vulcan who is fascinated by human emotions - almost wishes he had them.
Geordi Laforge is Sulu - they thought it would be hilarious for the blind guy tp be piloting the ship
Tasha Yar is Uhura (Uhura as communications officer AND security chief would have been bad ass) because she continuously gets to say hailing frequencies open
Dr. Beverly Crusher is Dr.(formerly Nurse) Christine Chapel because they wanted a female medical officer and so they'd have more women in prominent positions the TOS but also - in a sense - McCoy (there's a better McCoy parallel in season 2 not to mention his cameo in this episode).
Wesley Crusher is Chekov - they young guy to represent and attract the young audience - there's also an indication that he knows more about the ship than the chief engineer(s).
The Chief Engineer(s) - is Scotty - the idea is that this much larger ships needs more than one or maybe Scotty was just so good they couldn't replace him with just one character
Worf is (in one aspect) Spock - they want an alien on the bridge so that you're always reminded that USS isn't United States Ship and the crew aren't all humans (and apparently albino Data android isn't enough - he's also the measuring stick for strength of adversaries - if they can defeat Worf they're pretty damn strong.

Doing both TOS & TNG at the same time may cause problems - like next episode but for the most part TNG shied away from TOS references for the first 3 seasons so it may work out. And DS9 was for a time concurrent with TNG so you might be able to resct to them at the same time if you align the dates after you run out of TOS. You could watch TAS (The Animated Series) in between if that something you want to doyou could watch. Moot if you plan on skipping episodes.

The Next Generation was an outstanding series! The cast is overloaded with acting talent and the show very much kept the Star Trek formula of characters and storytelling but remixed it all in a unique way. You'll love the TNG characters every bit as much as you did the original crew. This show brought Star Trek to new heights and the two upcoming series ( Deep Space Nine and Voyager) were both set in this time period of Trek ( some 75-80 after Kirk's era).

Interesting choice watching the first aired episode of TOS, and the pilot episode of TNG! If you still have an interest in watching TOS and reacting to it, I'd say just go back and watch the "Best of the Best" episodes. The original Star Trek had a lot of so-so episodes, and definitely had quite a few stinkers! But it also had some truly outstanding episodes too!
If your interest is just going forward with The Next Generation, that's great too! It's much longer than TOS(TNG got 7 seasons versus TOS's 3), but most of the show is really good! And it has many, MANY great episodes worth reacting to! Although, just a warning, the first two seasons of TNG are pretty rough. There are some standouts but it doesn't really find its footing until Season 3, although at that point it becomes a truly exceptional show!
However you want to do it is cool though! You're reacting to Star Trek, my favorite franchise of all time and something that basically epitomized my youth, informed my morals, and helped shape me into the person I am today! So I will keep watching! Just enjoy the journey for yourself, that's the most important thing!
P.S. Here is my list of favorite TOS episodes. If you do want to react to more of that series, I hope this helps!:
    "Balance of Terror"
    "Amok Time"
    "Errand of Mercy"
    "Arena"
    "The Tholian Web"
    "The Trouble with Tribbles"
    "The Doomsday Machine"
"The City on the Edge of Forever"

Just for better clarity, I believe it’s about 75-80 years after. I think the first TNG movie actually gives the time difference. Otherwise, it would come down to comparing the star dates in each time period, when concurrent, like the star date in Star Trek movie 5 or 6 compared to the Star date on the TNG show with an episode coming out around the time of those movies. Also, in season 6 of TNG, we get a special TOS connection and the time difference between the two is discussed. That’s all I can say to prevent spoilers for Will Talks!

The first two seasons are a bit odd sometimes. But TNG is a better show. The phasers will change a few times.

Great reaction I hope you haven’t given up on you original series. There’s a lot of great episodes to see there. Next generation is good but a lot of people didn’t like it first they hated it actually the old fans nothing like the new old show. Picard is a diplomat instead of a warrior, they wanted something new data is the android what is the first Klingon to serve in Star Fleet we have peace with the Klingons now counselor Diana, Troy she’s from betazedmost of the species can read minds but she’s only half bet she’s half human so our powers are not as strong as others commanders William Riker first officer he’s more the action Kirk guy, lieutenant Natasha Yar, my favorite security chief. She was born one of the first earth colonies far out past earth, they got lost and they didn’t have a federation for help. They start bad leadership and stuff. We finally found them rescued the survivors. She was one of the rescued Dr Beverly crasher chief medical Officer wife of Captain Picard best friend Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the new Galaxy class starship NCC 1701 D enterprise federation flagship the best fleet the fastest of powerful ship also brand new this time their families on board so like one of the parents will be a officer or maybe both sometimes, but their kids are bored there’s a barbershop restaurants that didn’t like about it Georgde Leforge he’s for a while. He’s the new yes the blind guy drives the ship lol the reason McCoy is so old is because this takes place 87 years after Star Trek six The villain Q he’s really save the show at first he’ll be back every time you come back you like him better I think everybody dies. He’s one of those parts of the show God white powers. years ago, the credo Star Trek wanted to do a sequel. He called it the Star Trek phase 2 he’s gonna use the original crew council on the enterprise before they canceled the show first they’re working on phase 2 has scripts and everything but then Star Wars happened. Paramount said that we have a show that can make a movie out of that Star Trek. They’ve been 10 years so they did a movie instead and that other crew did the new series they got a new crew they were cheaper, but there was a Raiders strike season and second season so what they did was they tried to make up for with the old scripts for the new crew and the script from phase 2, the sequel show was never made to season one and two of the next generation in the was good, but it was good but the scripts Were. is not made for them but season three they get their own show together but it’s all worth watching believe me. It’s just different but good thanks for the fun until next time. I hope I’m not boring you but I just try to catch you up, I didn’t by the way what I told you doesn’t hurt anything doesn’t mess up anything no spoilers so you can enjoy everything for yourself. I hope I help you enjoy it more. That’s all for now. I hope you have fun.

Fair warning, there may be some rough patches in the first couple seasons. It'll start to really pick up with Season 3. But as the characters get better fleshed out, and the show gets a more coherent feel of what it wants to get from them, it will start to really shine at what makes Star Trek special, as a franchise. I hope you'll love the journey to come.

Umm the Paul Joseph Watson look for the thumbnails doesnt work for you FYI, and kinda makes me wanna come in and roast you, like you gotta give people their personal space with that, like back it up about a foot and a half and avoid the clickbait look
as otherwise people wont ever take you seriously and will roast you without watching the video, like I did to him every time his ugly stupid face showed up in my suggestions just because I watched a Count Dankula video on Christopher Lee
    as damn what a badass
Also while TNG had a rough start, they did build to it and get better, also dont expect the special effects and fights to hold up
I found out recently back then each phaser effect was 50 thousand dollars, which explains why half the phasers on the ship were never used and the enterprise was always loosing
it cost too damn much to do proper action back then, and they would flat out super impose the ships and reuse scenes from the movies
which while for TNG was a Strength once they got away from the French guy with a pogo stick shoved up his backside for seasons 2 and 3, just made this enterprise look way weaker than the TMP one
resulting in its well, its really stupid end in generations, that kinda signaled the end of smart star trek save for DS9
and the worst part is, even the writers of DS9 noticed this and made a special point for Sisko to give his condolences over the loss of it
something they never did in the TNG films

@@WillTalksMovies Ok, cool. Hopefully there's not too much information gap between whatever TNG episode you are on as compared to where in TOS you are.
As others probably already told you TNG is an AMAZING show but it's first two seasons have the paradox of having a lot of mediocrity but you can't just skip to season three because mediocre episodes or not there's too much important character and setting information that you would be very lost without. But my friend once you get to season three... Magic.
Enjoy. It's gonna be an inspiring ride.
