Better than Baltic Birch? [video 572]
In this one I make some plywood inserts for the recent #SYS-TOTE, but instead of using 4mm ‘Baltic’ #BirchPlywood, I use something far more interesting - and expensive! Enjoy!

Lamello Clamex S-20 in a $45 Biscuit Jointer
Christmas? Works great for father's day as well! Birilliant list.
I have this saw and we need to keep in mind it’s limitations. Yes, with the base you can use it on a track. You need to manually set the distance every time you install the base, which tends to wear on the rubber strip. You also need to provide your own Allen wrench for the mounting screws. The saw is also very limited in both power and endurance. I wouldn’t plan on more than a couple cuts on only the thinnest stock.
try bamboo its amazing
Tough on blades I’m told, but would be interested to try it! 👍👍
The Mac Allister looks like a rebadge of the Wen we have in the US
Very similar, yes. 👍
What brand of spacers are you using around the inlay doors
I use whatever I can get my hands on - should be a couple of options in the 'workshop essentials' list at 10minuteamazon.com 👍
Hi Peter Great info as usual. When I researched the 9088 tape, i found that it had been replaced by 3M GPT-020
Interesting, thanks. Yes, discontinued - but still plenty of stock around apparently. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop ….but not in Australia 🙂
Thanks Peter. I appreciate your clever approach
4mm! Hmmm.
hi my mdf furniture with wood texture (not sure if veneer) doesnt heave even finish. a drwaer looks slightly darker. the furniture maker who made it low quality finish says he can grit/sand the dark piece to open the color. and apply varnish to match the rest. does it sound good? i am so confused and frustrated
I was the Guitar Doctor for Stars Guitars from '77 - '80, which had started out as the store that Alembic had at 60 Brady Alley in San Francisco until they decided to sell off the store, which became Stars, owned by Ron Armstrong who started it & two partners; their professional 24 track recording studio, which became His Master's Wheels, owned by Elliot Mazer ,and their speaker cabinet business when they moved to Cotati, California to just concentrate on making state of the art, neck through the body electric guitars and basses. The speaker cabinets were made out of 13 ply 3/4" Finnish birch with 5/8" soundboards. They did that because marine grade plywood has no voids (which would cause unwanted vibration induced noise) and it is waterproof which makes it the only choice for professional outdoor concert sound systems. Look at video of any of the big Rock & Roll concerts from the late '60's through the '80's and you'll see them being use on stage and up in towers as the PA system. (The musicians all have their own favorite instrument amps & speakers.) Sorry to be so over long, but I thought the weather resistance of marine grade, voidless plywood might come in handy for outdoor and/or humid conditions plus, of course, cutting holes for finger pulls, etc. w/o having to fill an unexpected gap in a project. My Alembic B-12 speaker cabinet and the 5/8" speaker board I replaced the original one in my Fender Super Reverb with have all held up remarkably well over the decades from club work to large outdoor concerts with no deformation whatsoever.
A better option is the Metabo MFT "Multifunktionstisch MWB 100 (626991000)". They really fixed this problems I believe.
Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Co. I think they took their name from selling.....spruce....for airplanes. There are pretty strict rules (thank goodness) for the density, strength, quality and species of wood used on planes. Lots of planes are still made of wood and have been since Orville and Wilbur. AS&SC are a long established company that sells almost anything you can imagine to build or repair or maintain your aircraft. Good quality, not cheap (what is for an airplane?).
Thanks! Yes, it's like you add "marine" to something and the price jumps 60%, if you add 'aircraft' to something it doubles again! 🤷♂️ 👍
Just bought it - I have a good cabinet saw but this is excellent for small boxes and precise small work!
Nice! Had mine almost a year, 12-month review coming out next week. 👍
Thanks for the review of this. I was underwhelmed by the strength of the Clamex S-20 but i have never used the P-20 to compare. My approach is to use them along with standard biscuits with glue for better long term strength, just using the S-20 as a clamp which they do just fine.
Rang a bell just checked I have 2 sheets of 6mm 6 ply I have been keeping for a rainy day From a big box store in Germany.
Pricey stuff but looks good! See you at Makers Central - I'm going for the first time as a visitor not stuck on a stand :D
Oh, nice one! I have to odd dream about doing that, but usually all I ever manage is a quick walkabout before the doors open in the Saturday! See you there! 👍👍
Hi Peter, you have been a naughty boy! All the sides of the doors were cut and although most of the dust went towards the wall of your bench you did not wear a mask to protect yourself. All jokes apart I do enjoy your videos greatly and would not want you to get unwell.
Ive dun a video about dowels
Great video's Why use expensive aircraft grade plywood for draw dividers?
Thanks. And why not? As I say in the vid I'd be spending a decent amount just to get ordinary 4mm birch, and I wanted to try this after the Adam Savage video. 👍
Especially at smaller dimensions like those, I tend to resaw solid lumber-from offcuts if I have them, which I usually do-and mill to final thickness.
It is an absolute delight to work with that quality of material, and the things you can do… wort every penny 🤓
😂👍
Hi Peter - love your 10 minute videos, great value. I have am using a Zeta P2 now and love it, in fact done a complete house 4 bedrooms, kitchen, scullery, and did not use a single screw, only Clamex & Tenso P10 fittings, a lot of work but great challenge. Do you have any cleaver suggestions on how I could repair a Zeta cut that was misplaced and is visible in the cupboard side? Will all of the 100's of cuts I made only 2 mistakes and would like to try to hide them. The cabinet finish is 16mm dual faced melamine, white, chipboard. Thanks in advance.
Thanks! Sounds like you're plunged through to the face of the melamine? That's going to be tough to repair to any standard, let alone something invisible! You can get stick-on screw covers (cover caps) that are finished to match a variety of specific melamine manufacturers - you may be able to use them as a cover-up? Otherwise you'd need to very carefully cut the melamine face from an offcut and see if that will do the job. Tricky, very tricky.. Good luck with it! P 👍
Hi peter, thanks for the replay. I did no penetrate the other side, I make a cut using the Zeta and then had to move the connector position so there is a cut that needs to be covered. I think I will use a piece of edge banding to cover the hole as the Zeta biscuit cut is quite large. Thanks for your feedback.
Here we go again- learning about material that I need to save for 😅. Last time I went down that Peter Millard rabbit hole, I wound up with a sheet of black Valchromat and made new tops for my mft's. Very cool, but very expensive stuff. But I did learn something new and had great fun doing it, so that's really what matters at the end of the day, doesn't it?
Always a lesson to be learned! and Thanks! 👍
Hi Peter, to polish my skills I wish to make an mft myself. I was wondering what's the distance between edge and first line of holes? thanks
It can be whatever you want it to be if you're making your own; I don't own an OEM MFT any more, so couldn't tell you I'm sorry - but there are plenty of third-party tops available if you search for them, and I'm sure a search for MFT top dimensions would turn something up. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop many thanks for replying. bless. I listen to your channel carefully and I have learnt a lot from you. thanks
Isn't it strange how timber prices have not rationalised post pandemic ? - Trees must have had a cost of living crisis that we didn't know about - or Putin is just taking the Mik - or Canada just stopped supply - or Sweden didn't want to join the game - is it just me , or are they gouging ? Weetabix £ 7.00 - its dearer than contiboard, but doesn't glue as well.
An odd I,beri plys will aiways give you the two faces in the same orientation if grain. It sounded like you said they were opposite.
one can't help thinking it is a bit like flogging a dead horse, MFT tables come up second hand all the time and if you want an MFT you are probably capable of making a frame and legs for a replacement MFT top,
Don't know where you live but there are three MFTs on eBay right now, one an ancient MFT 800 and a couple of MFT/3s. That's more than I've seen ever - too me a couple of years of diligent searching before I turned up an MFT1080.
Track saw has absolutely changed my life. I’ve a stigmatism in both eyes, in opposite directions and can’t cut a straight line to save my life. No amount of careful practice changed that. The tracksaw did. I’ve also hardly any space but use a lot of sheet materials. I have to cut full size boards upright (clamps on track) as my rear garden is HALF the width of your workshop, but, I manage. Hands down best tool I’ve ever brought.
So no new DH98 Mosquito coming out of the Millard Aircraft Factory, in the near future, then?
Not in the near future, no! 😂👍
Thanks for this informative review. Very well spoken and presented. 👍
Thanks Peter, interesting (although unlike a lot of your other videos I won't be building this one!) I wonder if are you going to review Benchdogs new MFT tops that I've just had an email about though?
Thanks! Not sure what there'll be to say about an MFT top, other than the fact that there may be a conflict of interests around the 10MW MFT jig. 👍
Wow! My three go-to UK DIYers in one place! 🤔🤣😁
Out here on the west coast of Canada, (British Columbia) we have a long history of making aircraft out of aircraft plywood. Not regulated during WWII like aluminum it gained quite the reputation for strength and airworthiness. Look up the "Spruce Goose" it was the worlds largest seaplane made of wood. The footage is crazy. Wi can pick it up at our specialty store. JIM
Anybody else got serious plywood envy after watching this? 🙂 Great video Peter.
Thanks! 👍
Peter, congratulations on the videos, it's very TOP
Maker Central looks awesome! Unfortunately I'm heading back from America that weekend, but it'll definitely be one to try to get to next year!
Funny how NEC tape, at least in my experience, induces groans and a search for something else, in its intended use! Never seems to have the stick to hold anything down... But in the workshop, that could be a great tape to have! It's more of an anti-slip tape.
Oh my god, I've had this saw for a out 2 years and didn't know about the track trick!
Hi Peter, new to MFT so sincere thanks for making the series playlist. I'm looking to emulate your backyard mft table using the Dave Stanton track dogs and conduit pipe but was wondering if this fence system would also work well with a track and plunge saw?
Yes, this fence system was made with that in mind - easy to attach and remove as required, whilst still staying accurate. 👍
If I buy the plans how will I be able to cut out the shape for main body ?
Tracksaw, handsaw, bandsaw, jigsaw - you can use whatever you have. 👍
Hands up as someone who questioned things falling down the hole 🙋♀😂 The dividers look great and the material is really interesting if a bit pricey (Adam Savege is a bit of a fiend for using the best of the best for everything but I guess he has earned it by this point haha). Nice to see a simple construction that isn't over engineered for the job without fancy finger joints or the like. We're all guilty of over engineering, reigning it back to suit a projects purpose is a skill as worthy of learning as much as the fancey stuff!
Thank you! 🙌 And yes, Adam has a lot to answer for - I still have an automatic tape dispense in my amazon shopping basket...! 😬 There's no doubt finger joints would be stronger, but a simple glue joint is strong enough for this application. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop after last week's video you would need six automatic tape dispensers 😂
@@gingerelvis 😂
Looking forward to seeing you next weekend Peter
Can't wait! 👍
Peter, I wouldn't be scared to fly a plane covered in that plywood. Remember, there are planes covered in canvas!
