It was great to see that you can actually break down those huge sheets in that tiny little shot that you have. I had always wondered how that was accomplished and had assumed that you had a lumber yard do it for you. My "shop" is my back deck when it's not raining, it's not freezing cold, or too hot to breathe. I really enjoy the fact that you can do so much in that space without industrial level equipment.
That's the good thing about track saws. Don't need much more room than the size of the sheet and somewhere to stand.

My shop is actually 3 spaces, one on the front porch (in Iowa that means months in Winter when I can't use it), my garage at the back of the property--no electricity, yet) and a space in the basement that measures 3m. x 3m. or 95 sq. ft. No way to bring full sheets of goods down the steps and into the space.
When you have a small space, you either have someone else do it for you, or you bring the tool to the material, not the other way round.
I'm sure Trend Direct did very well out of this video! I added the 6x30 tenons, but since I was on their site I also added £80 worth of router bits.

The glue grooves look like something that should have been there from the start. Neat.
The Festool OEM parts are stamped with a texture that holds the glue pretty well. 👍

Loose tenons are like any other consumable. You start small…. Screws from big box stores, packs of 20, now packs of 1000. It always amazes me how many you use

You've hit the nail (or should that be loose tenon) on the head here Peter, being a DIY / have a goer of many different things and being able to buy smaller quantities to get you through a job is a really nice thing. I know we are a way off but I can't wait for the Domino patent to lapse and for Domino-alikes to become common place, dare I say when you can pick one up from your favourite German discount supermarket.

Just ordered some, I've had the jig for a month and not even used it 😅 no excuse now.

So encouraging watching you manage full sheets (mdf, no less) in your shop without a huge sawstop like other youtubers. Makes me want to go the MFT route in my garage instead of spending so much time setting up and taking down my jobsite saw. Do you have a dust management system in there?
Thanks! Yes, full set of vacs for each tool - I did a shop tour a few vids back, chatted about it then as one if the major changes in the last ~6 years. 👍
Gonna have to try those when they become available over here. Interested in the 6x30mm of course. But I have such a nice jig for cutting 10mm off of 6mm Festool Domino's already. I keep some 6mm domino's at 40 in case I want to do through domino's.

Even Sedge just recently blew through a panel when doing a miter. I don't know why they don't make shorter Dominos, but the same width. I just cut mine down.

Watching you move and then breakdown a full sheet of 18mm MDF reminds me of one of the reasons I don't like MDF! OTOH if you had more room you could use Nick Engler's brilliant sheet good carrier and plywood hinges. My space is much less organized and almost as small and I feel for you, I just turned 70 and have developed a bad shoulder, hurrah for old age. BTW your link takes me to the UK store but I get a redirect to Trend USA for the same product!

Great video as always Peter. I wondered if you've tried one of the many panel carriers available on t'internet? I've got a KingSaid carrier and it's made lugging sheets of MR-MDF a lot easier than my previous methodology of equal parts sweating, swearing and dragging
Thanks, but a panel carrier only helps when you have the space to wield a panel in. And this is the first full sheet I’ve cut in a couple of years. 🤷♂️👍

One of the reasons you mention about why a 6mm tenon is ideal for 18mm wood thickness is the ⅓ ratio. (Amongst others). I have been searching the internet and one counterargument I have found in favor of 5mm tenons is that they allow more wood around the tenon thus making the construction stronger (I guess it makes more sense if working with MDF). I do not want to bring any controversy but I found the argument quite interesting and worth commenting. Any thoughts anyone?
Pretty much everything I ever made commercially was with 5x30 dominos; I think Festool went with 5mm initially because you could - just - use them successfully in 12mm material (the 4 x 20mm domino didn't come along until later) so it gave them a bit more scope / bragging rights with the range of materials the domino could be used with, out of the box. I don't think 5mm vs 6mm makes a scrap of difference re joint strength, but judging by the comments I've had over the years, some folks are just happier sticking with the 1/3 rule. 🤷♂️ 👍
Great video as usual but haven’t been through all the comments but looking at the 10MW LTJ 30 which I am considering purchasing, do you do an option of 6mm up it straight router bit instead of the 5mm one for the Festool dominoes ????
I don’t offer it, but Rennie tools have a 6mm spiral upcut bit if anyone wants to use them. 👍

Hi Peter, noticed you didn't clamp your tracksaw guide while cutting the long length. I have an Aldi (or Lidl - can't remember) with various lengths of guide and haven't managed to make cuts without the guide moving. Does the Festool saw have magical grips?
There are rubber grips underneath the rail that do a pretty good job of keeping the rail in place on most surfaces

This is my experience as well. I tend to clamp most cuts on the parkside saw because it does seem to wander.

Do the 6mm Rennie spiral uncut bits work well with the 6mm trend tenons? I recently got a different router bit and found the hole it made to be too wide for a tight fit.
Yes, absolutely - though any 6mm router bit should tbh, unless there’s a lot of runout in the router. 👍
Have you tried the fast cap fastenons?
I have some but haven’t used them yet as they’re 6x40 and I have limited use for that size. 👍
after watching several videos by you and others, i see you (and others) using specialty gloves to protect you hands and to increase your grip on the larger sheet....that said, what brand do you use? thanx rick
No particular preference Rick - I tend to just pick up whatever my local timberyard has, but I'll check what they are when I'm back in the workshop. 👍

Interesting departure from your more typical format Peter, but worked well enough in demonstrating the Trend loose tenons whilst completing a cabinet build at the same time !
Looks like a useful addition and as you say that 6x30 is an ideal size, thanks for posting this, I could never justify a Domino but this is much more accessible !
Well, I could do a talking head video about loose tenons and their sizes, but I’m pretty sure nobody would be watching after the first 30 seconds! This way you get to watch me make something, I get to short he tenons in use, and I promote the jig and the clamping guides. Win, win. 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop under the edge of the sheet. It's like a little dolley with a small platform, a couple of side bars to keep the sheet in place and a stout pair of wheels. I am sure I have seen a UTube about this. I will try to find the video and put a link in a message.

How do you decide when to use a 3rd or 4th loose tenon? This cabinet looked big enough to add one in the middle.
Thanks Mark! I only used two in this cabinet because it's not 'real' just for a video; ordinarily I'd have at least another one in the middle, sometimes two depending on the likely load. Wall cabs are generally shallower, front to back, so not as much mass to support. Don't think I've ever used more than two dominos between the sides and top/base on a wall cabinet (typically ~300mm deep) but for a base cab I'd add another mid-domino, sometimes two. I've never had a cabinet fail btw, whatever I used. HTH P 👍
Loved the sound the board made as it bumped up to the stop. Peters vids have lots of arty asmr moments I find.
How does that router jig (or router jigs in general) work? I can't quite work it out from the shots. I don't think there's anything on my cheap wickes-brand router that would guide it along that hole.
You should be able to get a guide bushing for your router to do tasks like this.
Watch Peter’s Loose Tenon jig videos (there’s a playlist) and you’ll see how it works. A great jig that you can use with any router (and guide bush)

You can fit a guide bush to a router to make use of these jigs, 30mm is the 'standard' and most routers come with one. 👍

One company sells bulk stock that you cut your own dominos to length as needed and of course you can always make your own - but the glue grooves always stymied me. How to do those without a huge faffing about. I too have to work outside as the shop is too small. I have one sheet of HDF coming in to make an MFT top out of - and I ain't looking forward to it! LOL That stuff is just too dang heavy!

I've found other suppliers of loose tenons at more competitive prices but, find it far better to simply make my own out of scraps that are almost always the same wood as my projects.

The purchased one's, no. As far as the scraps, I fail to see how using what would otherwise be waste isn't being far more environmentally conscious than making another purchase which has the added carbon footprint of being a retail product (trucks, trains, etc)@@10MinuteWorkshop

I'm surprised you don't cut the sheets down a little outside first.
Normally I have them ripped by my yard, it this was supplied direct from a manufacturer I’ll be working with soon, and full sheets are all you get! 🤷♂️👍

after watching you cut up 4x8 mdf (using track saw) i have a couple of questions------what is your height-----what is your mft height-----do you consider your sawing operation to be "ideal" or would you like it (mft) to be higher/lower thank you in advance rick patreon mbr
Hi Rick. Bench height is 810mm/32”; the ceiling height forced me into a slightly lower setup, but I actually prefer it. I’m 1m 78 or thereabouts - a little over 5’10” - and it works pretty well for me. HTH. P 👍

If you're buying in boxes of 1800-2000 - like I am - then these obviously aren't for you. Or me. 🤷♂️ But for the folks who need to spread their loose tenon budget around then they make sense.
What's wrong with biscuits? Much quicker than these...
Biscuits do not add strength to the joint, and with a festool domino it's the same speed (just much more expensive). This jig is less expensive but takes more time.
Never personally found biscuits add much strength to a joint. Have a biscuit jointer but rarely use it these days. I tend to use dowels or cut my own loose tenons and slots. Definitely slower but woodworking is a hobby for me so time isn't critical.
Biscuits are really only an alignment tool. You can use them to fix non- loadbearing things like face frames and edging, but for cabinetry they need additional mechanical fixings for strength.
Speed before joint strength. It's probably the cost of the machine that's putting you off, because the larger grip area of dominoes, plus greater material strength leading to stronger joints relative to biscuits couldn't be undesirable could it?
@@davidhull2060I've never broken a biscuit. Perhaps in MDF you could?
The big advantage to Domino in cabinet making is that you can get closer to a corner or use them to join a face frame without the slot blowing through.
Furniture is a different story. You need joint strength to resist twisting and racking loads.
Loose tenon's really shine here because you don't need an additional 25-35mm on each end of your stock when a secondary wood will do.
