I had to watch @2:50 in slo-mo a few times to make sure Peter still had his finger. Wow what slight of hand.
Those doors look great and easy to build.
Quick tip: when I set my fence an ⅛ inch or a couple of millimeters above the surface, I don’t have to clear the inevitable dust as Peter did every couple of passes while milling the raised panels.
That's why some fences do have a tiny gap below or trimmed corner to accommodate for dust. But good tip.

Great work Peter. I'm a hobby woodworker and am about to make some panel doors and hadn't thought of the loose tenon system until this video.

I had to make some raised panelling last year but did it using veneered mdf. I mitered the mdf to form the bevelled edges and still keep the veneer on the face, if that makes sense. Not tried it before and it worked very well. The finished article can be seen on the 2nd series of Marvels Loki, probably the 2nd or 3rd episode, in the beer keller.
Im watching that later tonight, gonna keep a good lookout for that furniture! Is there a big prop department for that series? All that “CRT Punk” stuff in the intro/extro is really awesome too =D
@@UtubeEric12345 We did the whole series last year at Pinewood studios and on various locations. I'm in Construction, props are a different department. They had loads of amazing props for OBs workshop literally tons of stuff on the shelves.

I cut the grooves for inset panel a little deep, and insert small foam rubber balls in the to center the panels. But it is a habit carried over from hardwood doors, and not necessary with MDF as it doesn’t have a difference in moisture movement, and won’t split. Guess I could glue the panels in solid.

I've used both Medex (Roseburg) and Ultrastock (GP). I prefer Medex as it machines, sands and paints exceptionally well. Ultrastock edges (cut or routed) require sanding before and after priming as the fibers tend to raise like regular MDF then you have to re-prime to obtain a smooth surface for paint. While it took a bit of time finding a distributor within 100 mile radius, it's been worth every bit of time and money using these products. Many thanks to Peter for using MR/MDF in his videos as they introduced me to a different approach to painted cabinetry.

Re "double dust collection" (5:15). I notice you have the vac hose mounted over the trailing edge of the work piece. I have occasionally seen dust collection mounted in front of the work piece as the router throws the dust forward. Any thoughts on that?
Really interesting to note that Medite MRMDF is denser than normal, it could be a great option to use for part of a sound proofing process when density matters

where i live (turkey) every autoshop that do sound system instalattion(thinks that come with country like ours) uses only mdf for bass containers. they dont aware off the denser mdf yet tho, besides that, quailty and density of the mdf went a lot lower in the recent years. standart size for sheet in here is 280x210cm's, when i first started 10 years ago, that sheet weight about 100 kgs, now its around 75..
Peter I know this is not what your video is about but since you are or were a cabinet maker, what's the best way to figure out what to do with a space? I saw in your video you installing ready-made pieces and thinking about doing something like that over a radiator. Any suggestions on how I can figure this out and install a unit premade? It's in between a chimney and a window wall about 12 inches (305 mm) deep.

I've built quite a few paint grade mdf doors in the past but I typically use poplar for the rails and styles... now I'm wondering if there is any benefit in using poplar for these purposes. Thoughts?
Poplar’s a bit more robust if the there are little ones around, but otherwise I’d say no, not really. 👍
Have you ever used an ogee or similar profiled stile and rail cutter rather than a grove and loose Tenon just curious as I used a set for a recent job and it worked great. Thanks again that job also wouldn’t have been quite as easy if your videos didn’t exist

Nice work. Just wondering why you opt to cut a groove in the ends of the rails and use loose tenons instead of cutting tenons on the ends of the rails?

Thanks James! No, my Graco days are long behind me - when these get finished they’ll just be hand painted. As for size, I’ll be stalking about that a little in the next video, but I don’t generally recommend cabinet doors much wider than 600 mm, maybe 7000mm at a push, mostly because if the arc of the door - you need a lot of space! Heavy door too, at that size with the raised panel. 👍

They came courtesy of Sautershop during a promotion I helped with. Heavy duty f clamps and parallel clamps, all 800mm I think? 🤷♂️👍

Peter, why cut a floating tennon instead of coping a toung onto the end of the rail?
Easier, and faster, but do it whichever way you prefer. 👍

1) I saw a comment somewhere else about sealing MDF against moisture using CPES (clear penetrating epoxy sealant). Is this something you'd ever do before painting them?
2) Would you say the Optima grade MDF is as good as a high quality HDF panel?
I'd ultimately like to CNC my own doors.

Hi and welcome. I’ve never used any special edge treatment, just a quality moisture resistant board, sanded back appropriately. Medite Optima is a nice board, so is Finsa Hidrofugo. And honestly, so is ‘plain’ Medite MR MDF. I’d always run some tests before committing to anything and would suggest you do too, it I’ve had no issues with any of these boards. 👍👍
In what way would you say MR mdf is more stable than regular MDF? is it that it has less change in size with changing humidity? or is it more just that if it gets wet, it won't be as badly damaged?
Personally, in Canada, it's just not easy to find the stuff. But finding free MDF in large quantities, especially for small projects like this, is rather trivial.
It’s a better quality board all around - stronger, denser, more durable, moisture resistant obvs. has other benefits too. 👍

The norm used to be that the raised panel does not protrude above the stiles and rails. If you are using all 22mm MRMDF or whatever, you will get that. If you wanted a shaker style door out of hard wood (we didn’t call them shaker style in those days) you didn’t want a really thin panel and so we did what Peter showed but in hard wood and then fitted the door with the raised panel internal.
It’s about 3mm or 1/8” proud of the rail & stile.

Hi, sorry to take so long to get back to you - cutter was in the bench and I've only just managed to uncover it. So the cutter has this on the shaft:-
Wealden T 1930 1/2 HW - there's a few variations of this specific cutter, but that's all I have on it I'm afraid - I bought it years ago! HTH P

Being a bit of a wood snob (probably being very charitable :^) ) I rarely use MDF/HDMF, but having recently built a replacement top for my MFT, and watching your video's I really do wish we had a good selection of MDF/HDMF to choose from. Alas; I think a lot of folks in the US are also wood snobs so the demand is not there. sigh
I also prefer clear finishes to paint so it's not all on the material choice. But dang, it do machine up nicely! And it's not hard to find nice clear MDF....... :)
I think that if we had the selection of natural timbers at the kind of prices you pay, we’d probably be wood snobs too! A consequence of that is that we have access to these great man-made panels that machine and finish well - though probably best not with a clear-coat! 😂👍
Yep, agree with Peter on that one. Decent wood over here in the UK is extremely expensive and difficult to come by if you live in a sleepy rural area. Plenty of pine (red or white, maybe southern yellow if your lucky) to be had but the quality is hit and miss - some of it terrible. Red Grandis is about the only hardwood I can get over the counter where I live and since Covid, the price of that has sky rocketed. I can only dream of some of the nice wood you have over there that you consider "paint grade".

I emailed medite and they do not sell in the USA. does anyone know how I could get something similar in the USA? MDF is easy to get, but not MR. Its strange that in europe MR is ubiquitous but in the USA it is rarer than a unicorn.
We have the opposite with SawStop 😉
MR is available in the USA but you have to be persistent and search it out, unfortunately.
There are several manufactures of MR/MDF here in the states. Roseburg & Georgia-Pacific to name two. Like Baltic Birch Plywood, You're not going to find it at your local big box store. Check with a specialty lumber company that deals in sheet goods for availability.
My local (Ohio) plywood supplier stocks MRMDF in 15/16 and ¾ inch. It cuts, mills, and paints beautifully.

Would it have been easier just to router-cut a shallow rectangular groove on a solid door-sized sheet of MDF instead of 9:55 ? It's all just aesthetics - yes? The solid door would probably be a whole lot stronger. Heck - cut it on a CNC for all I care.

@@10MinuteWorkshop I was hoping to hear a reason why one would not be happ(ier) with it - something I had overlooked, maybe.
You have missed a trick with your router table fence - needs a small 2-3mm chamfer on the bottom of the face so you don't have to brush it every time to make the work sit up tight. Pretty frustrating to watch even sped up, ha ha.
There is no question of the versatility of MDF however, MDF produces more toxins, dust and its weak structure is not suitable for cabinet making and other furniture production. I personally prefer poplar as a cheaper alternative.
