    In last weeks video I made a pair of workshop cabinets, and in this one I’m making the double that sits between them; like before, I’ll be making it without a tape measure, a ruler or a square, and without nails, screws or any other kind of fixing, and no table saw, no dado stack, no router, just a tracksaw.
    Though not just any tracksaw, my first tracksaw actually, the Festool TS55 I bought in 2008, the one that I used to build my fitted furniture business from scratch. Who’s interested in a ‘Why buy quality tools’ video in the New Year?
    This is my last public video of 2023. Thanks everyone, and enjoy the break.

    Using each piece to measure and mark the others has always been my way of doing this sort of thing. I find it vastly more accurate than measuring with rulers or similar.

    Always like to use a story rod in the workshop. Fantastic use of what you can do with a tracksaw. It probably is one of the best gateway tools to cleaner and more efficient wood working! My Rotex is 2007 and tbh other than the dust port I see no difference to the 2023 version. Still going strong too!

      Thank you! House Renovations are all done - literally this week - so yes, there'll be some videos on that whole project to come in the New Year. For a variety of reasons it made sense to wait until the project was complete before trying to pick up mid-project. 👍

    Great to see these back to basics videos, too many youtubers focus on the toys and not the technique. Although not necessarily practical for everything it's good reminder that there is often a more simple way to do things. I'm guilty of measuring down to the nearest atom and still getting the cut wrong when referencing off an known existing part would be been better.

    I don't do much 'proper' hand tool woodwork any more, but one thing I have always done is make a marking rod for setting out. It is way more accurate than using a tape for each measurement.

    Best is obviously a relative term to our own preferences.
    In the future I want to buy more used kit, just wish there was a means of being sure they are not stolen etc.
    Just sold a Fein multi master - first time ever I was asked for a receipt…

  • @rfrisbee1
    @rfrisbee1 Před 5 měsíci +1

    You used tape! 😁 Precision is more important than accuracy in most woodwork. I made a small box to house an electronics project a few weeks ago using a similar strategy, though did it all on a table saw by making rebates.
    The only problem I've had when laminating plywood or MDF is that it takes a large amount of force to get the pieces to fit together with a narrow glue line, which often leads to the pieces slipping out of alignment. One technique I've used to mitigate this is to put some small nails (~1mm dia) in inconspicuous places before glue-up that go through the top piece and slightly into the bottom piece. These act as temporary guide pins during glue-up and are removed (and filled if holes visible) after the glue has set. This allows me to focus most of my attention on clamping the pieces together with sufficient force to close up the glue line.

    I've been doing a similar project recently, makin ga shelving unit roughly 400 mm deep by 500 mm wide and just over 2 m tall. I dropped and broke my 'Tape King' tapemeasure, and the only decent blind-accessible digital tapemeasure that talks on the market is around £175 and difficult to get hold of. I've been making the unit mostly using strips cut to the right dimensions using reference blocks of known sizes and a lot of careful ligning up. The tracksaw, a DIY MFT with benchdogs fence and a decent rail square have been a godsend, and by some miracle I've ended up with a cabinet that is not only dead square but also the size I wanted. I wish I'd thought of your skin / liner idea for the fixed centre shelves and the top and bottom though, as centring the middle shelf wasn't easy without a tapemeasure and the assembly required a lot of clamping squares, spring clamps and swearing. The moral of the story is that while there are plenty of digital tapemeasures on the market now, I wish a brand would equip one with Bluetooth and a smartphone app to read the measurements. There was supposed to be a Bluetooth version of the eTape16 but it never materialised. The Tape King is a great device, but it's designed for casual DIY and isn't durable enough to be used in a workshop, and it's expensive to replace when accidents inevitably happen. Anyway, nicely done.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks Ashley; are you a blind woodworker? I can't begin to imagine what a challenge that would be, so congratulations of persevering with it, even after you broke your tape measure! Never heard of The Tape Kind before - I'll look into it, thank you for mentioning it - but I agree that it seems crazy that no digital measure can interface with Siri / Alexa / Google or an app to voice, or note down the measurements. I'm a little surprised that Apple doesn't have anything that will do this - they're usually pretty good with accessibility features. Anyway, thanks so much for taking the time to comment, very much appreciated. Very best wishes. Peter

    Peter, you've shown us many cabinets, wardrobes etc that you've built and installed, all usually from MDF or plywood which means you must use some edge banding technique or machine (Centuro ?) perhaps. We'd love to see how you actually edge band you work please ?

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi and thanks. No, no edgebanding here, not on a painted carcass; I use a quality MRMDF that produces very clean edges. Plywood is almost always Birch ply, so no additional edge work needed. I've occasiinally used veneered MDF, and the edgebanding was done by my timberyard on a machine that costs close to six figures. I've used a conturo and they're an excellent choice if you need to do everything yourself and have the volume of work to justify the cost, but not for me. 👍

    Nice back to basics with very few tools give people the chance to step into woodworking without a huge invest, although I am sure most beginners will not have such an impressive collection of clamps that you used. Will the bottom shelf be strong enough just glued as it has no mechanical structure holding it in place? I would add at least some nails like Ikea products into the back to support the glue, but not sure if this is overkill with modern glues.
    Thanks for all your great videos again this year Peter, have a great Christmas and good start into 2024.

      Sounds like a good script for a radio show... I'm not a hand tool guy, so number 1 would be a generator, then probably a chainsaw (those tropical trees wont fell themselves) followed by bandsaw, planer, drill & bits, sledge hammer, small hammer. Not sure if that's 7 or 8 - depends how you view those drill bits - but a portable saw would be useful, I guess. Luxury would be a bed, I think, and the book would be "XXX's guide to surviving on a desert island" - I made that title up but I'm pretty sure there's one just like that on Amazon! 😂 👍

      I would go with flint and steel for fire starting then knife, axe, adze, framing chisel, mortice chisel @@10MinuteWorkshop

    Peter, is this technique of using paper and using offcuts to measure simply to demonstrate or something one would actually use in a production environment? Ie, is it actually quicker or better, or simply something fun to try?

      I've only ever used paper templates occasionally, but a 'rod' / 'story stick' and a physical template is standard practice, yes. The 'no rule no tape' thing is just to get across the idea that accuracy comes from within, not from an expensive ruler or marking knife. 👍

      Thanks, Peter. I’m just getting into woodworking and imagine it would have cost me a lot of hours or material or both before I figured this out for myself!

    Hi Peter. If we're making cabinets accessible to people with fewer tools, would screws be easier, than making housing joints? If you have a screwdriver, then you'll need far fewer clamps.
    I have a Domino, so I don't feel housing joints are necessary for me, but I wonder if mechanical fixings have made housing joints obsolete?

      Reading this back, it sounds like I'm being negative, which I'm definitely not! There's a ton of good advice in this video, as in all of your videos.

      The problem with screws is that they’re a visible fixing, so unless you plug the heads with dowels they’ll always be visible. This is a way to get a strong cabinet using joints that are as strong as the ‘real’ thing, but without using fixings. And yes, the fixings would just replace the clamps tbh. 👍👍

      @@10MinuteWorkshopand it definitely gives you another tool in your toolkit for designing furniture. It's a technique well worth having available.

    Witch cheaper 😂 track saw do you recommend as the ones I see all look the same. Or maybe a second hand better one. I must say I use modern glue with hardly any other fixings and nothing has come apart yet 😅

      I'm out of touch a bit with the current brands of entry-level saws tbh. so it's a video I need to do soon into the New Year. Modern glues are very good - the material fails before the glue-line in my experience. 👍

    By the way, isn't glue classed as a fixing

    So there were two woodworkers, seems one was american and the other british, well, they were debating the merits of imperial v metric measurements. I got bored and went off and built a storage cabinet without using either - they were still arguing when I got back lol. I often plan using measurements but when it comes to cutting, it usually falls to Stops or marking one piece against another etc. Ahh, the thickness of a pencil line eh? Seasons greeting Peter.

    I have waged a life long war with numbers, it an effort to expunge them from my life. I might not be all the way there yet, but with rods, multiple sets of dividers and various templates and jigs I'm as close as I will get. Consequently the number of my mistakes has fallen markedly.....Well I've put the kibosh on this afternoon's work, haven't I. Compliments of the season to you all.

    Well, the first thing you did wrong was use a mitre saw to cut the stick. erm
