Anyone else of the opinion that Masking Tape has a reasonably short shelf-life? I’m strictly DIY but definitely notice that a fresh new roll is much better than one, say, a yr old.
Great video.
Agreed. Many years ago I was told to store rolls of masking tape in the fridge. Can't say I remembered to do it very often but may be worth a try.
It dries out. Might help putting it into plastic container after using.
For temporary fixing (like templates etc.), using masking tape on both surfaces and a few drops of CA glue works well and is easy to remove afterwards without leaving residue.
Who would have thought that a video about sticky tape could be so interesting and informative. It's a long time since I last had to replenish my stock...I nearly choked on my Fondant Fancy when you mentioned the price of the Tesa tape🤣
The middle of Lidl is a great place to pick up masking tape. The 3M masking tape is often there in a pack of 4 different widths at a good price
Good shout, thanks Doug! 👍
Thank you for taking the time to make a video giving us you experiance with tapes. See you on the next video.
Not a traditional woodworking extra, but I always have a couple of rolls of gaffer tape (duct tape for the non-musos) on hand. It does leave some residue on certain surfaces but cleans off easily. I've done tons of, ahem, 'temporary' fixes to all sorts of things and it's strong, resilient and long-lasting A useful thing to have around if you need a quick fix.
Yes, I always have a roll of gaffer tape around but it doesn’t get used enough to make it into a ‘top six picks’ list. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop Gaffer tape and duct tape are NOT the same. In particular, gaffer tape is designed to remove cleanly, while duct tape is designed to be semi-permanent.
And gaffer's tape is matte, not shiny, so it doesn't stand out under photo or stage lighting.
Oddly, many duct tapes are terrible for sealing ductwork; the adhesive and even the tape itself is notorious for drying out in hot attics, and of course when in contact with heating ducts. (I use fiberglass mesh tape and mastic. That's a whole 'nother video, though. )
Also beware of duct versus Duck tape. "Duck" is a tradename; "duct" is the term for a whole range of similar products. (In my experience, Duck tape is thinner and stretchier than most duct tape, and has a reputation for being water repellent. It seems to be the original fabric based tape, with origins in WWII.)
Frog tape works well for me Peter. Good for box glue ups, easy to mark on and peels off cleanly 👍
$35 for 6 rolls of the 3M painters tape at the big box store. $13 for a roll of double sided carpet tape, 2”x 30 yards on Amazon. Its fabric backed comes off cleanly and is super strong.
Funny how NEC tape, at least in my experience, induces groans and a search for something else, in its intended use! Never seems to have the stick to hold anything down... But in the workshop, that could be a great tape to have!
It's more of an anti-slip tape.
Excellent summary of a simple but important item. Thanks Peter 👍
My old man worked in the car body repair trade and now yacht building so I have always managed to acquire masking tape readily. I ran out recently and thought I'd go pick up a roll and nearly fell over how expensive the good stuff is. Generally I use 3M stuff, white or blue doesn't usually matter or the more secure fixings that I do, I pick up the 3m masking tape that they have in Lidl occasionally as it's very cheap but it is the low tack stuff so gets used for marking up and easy removal. 3m vhb is incredible stuff for a permanent bond on an uneven surface in all weathers. Double sided I use whatever carpet tape I can get at the time generally. For work holding recently I tried masking tape on both surfaces and super glue between them after seeing someone else do it online, I was very surprised how well it works, better than double sided tape for adhesion and removability without residue. Honestly thought it was a bit of a joke but after having pieces shift when flattening with a router with double sided tape I was really blown away by how well it works.
VHB is fantastic stuff. Works equally well for sticking LED tapes to cabinets (self adhesive tapes peel off after a few weeks) and plastic signs to rough brick walls.
@@rhyd42 it's amazing stuff, anything that can hold a GoPro to a motorcycle helmet or a surfboard is seriously resilient!
Peter, my go to double-sided tape is Intertape 591/BEIG07536 591 Double Sided Flat back Paper Tape. 36’ rolls in 5 different widths. It has all the qualities I’m looking for. One additional recommendation is that Jodee Bickell at Inspire Woodcraft has taught me to leave a tail of the backing after each use which means that I never have to use a sharp tool to peel off the backing which I find time taking and frustrating. It’s a great technique that I thought I’d pass on. Thanks for this video and your excellent channel, Peter.
Thanks a bunch for all the info and tips, Peter! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you! You too! 👍
Hi Peter, good advice on sticky tapes, I am a bit of a scrooge when it come to sticky tape. I do get mine from Poundland £1 roll for mashing tape can't go wrong, and for double sided tape and for permanent use I use carpet tape. As always a great video Take care
3M VHB is thick, intended as a replacement for mechanical fasteners. Sort of thing you could stick an anvil to a vertical marble slab with. Double-sided tape costs me £500 per roll at a reasonable hourly rate, separating the backing tape. If you felt inclined a video on that would be good, especially if you joined forces with Leo and a blind maker.
That's how to get out of a sticky situation. LOL.
I use and like the NEC tape, but I try not to leave it on for more than a day. I have found that it can lightly damage old finishes if left for longer. I have never had any issues with new or unfinished wood.
£18 pounds roll. I might have been born at night, but I wasn't born last night!
Thank you for that video, very useful, will be checking out the links 👍
Removal tip: Don't lift the end of the tape vertically, that is, at right angles to the surface it's stuck to. Instead, fold it back on itself and pull parallel to the work surface. This reduces the chance of damaging the work surface, and may reduce the amount of adhesive left behind.
Hi Peter, another excellently informative video. Thank you.
You mentioned briefly, sanding off pencil marks. I find the use of a normal pencil eraser much quicker and more effective, with less damage to the surface.
I often use your previously recommended double sided tape to secure small workpieces to the sacrificial boards when making tracksaw cuts - although the guide rail is pretty non slip, it struggles with smaller items. Also useful for keeping ply pieces in place while cutting out for, say, a plain picture frame.
as always Great Video Peter , thankyou for sharing , Over here is OZ its just getting very expensive , Blue Painters Tape 48mm x 55m will set you back $13:80 a roll ????? when doing a job thats needs tape you really gotta factor in this added expense
Hi Peter
Great info as usual.
When I researched the 9088 tape, i found that it had been replaced by 3M GPT-020
Interesting, thanks. Yes, discontinued - but still plenty of stock around apparently. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop ….but not in Australia 🙂
good topic
Thanks for sharing.
Thank You Peter!
Another video made just at the right time. I'm about to embark on some mass manufacturing of some parts where I'll need to use a template and stick the template to each workpiece, so the floor tape may be the ideal option. Personally I never use a double-sided tape in jig making. If the jig is a keeper, glue is cheaper. It's also stronger and permanent and even some CA glues give you a bit of positioning time.
Thanks Peter always informative
I get a lot of my wife's left over rolls of 2" wide Green Frog tape or 3M blue painters tape. They started out in the shop, but some how migrated inside till they get too small for her needs, and then shows up in the shop again.
I've not had much luck with regular masking tape, because it drys out, and will not peel off the roll properly I guess I'll have to try a better brand. . Well done as always.👍👍👍
Dried out masking tape can be reactivated in the microwave
Hello Peter,
interesting video, although only the 3m and of course the Tesa are available in Germany. One tape, for permanent usage is the 3M VHB 5952F but not really in combination with wood
Thanks for that
great shout on the double sided tape. I used tessa double sided and it can be a nightmare to remove it, sticks like proverbial to the blanket. I guess its more for a stick and forget tape, will deffo get some NEC tape. I do like the green frog tape for sticking boxes together when doing glue ups. I find it has a little stretch to help pull the mitre together but has enough stick to stick to finished wood unlike the yellow version and then peels away nicely.
Thanks Peter, Informative as always, like many I've accumulated many rolls of different tapes, but don't use enough to really make fair comparisons, so I appreciate you sharing your experience. I also like the "ECO" brown tape, and also have a roll of the clear nylon reinforced tape which is very useful for many repair jobs, and holding tasks, but only for tough finishes as it's inclined to strip them after a while !
Tapes 🤔 Tracy (Cori) was always upstairs playing them 🎉
Opps think I’ve shown my age 😂😂😂😂
Looks like Peter has it all taped up. He could have thrown a few more minutes on the video so I could finish my Chicken stew. FWIW the Screwfix masking tapes seem good to be although, like Amazon, you don't always get the exact same item each time. Thanks Peter.
Hi Peter, absolutely love the channel. Slightly random, non woodworking related question, where do you get your denim shirts? I'm rather partial to a denim shirt and the one you're wearing in this particular video is particularly nice. Thank you, Jamie . 😊
Thank you! These are from Uniqlo, usually purchased in the sale. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop Thank you, I’ll take a look. I have bought stuff from Uniqlo before - nice clothes. 🙏🏼
I have been carrying masking tape in my toolbox for about 30 years. It is such useful product. I recommend everyone to carry it.
On a side note Peter, Metabo has just released a MFT table. It looks very stable.
Thanks. And yes, I know about the Metabo MFT-alike - trying to find out if /when it will make it to the UK. 👍
Useful info. See you in 2 weeks.
Here’s Andy - looking forwards to it! 👍
blue tape is awesome to glue veneers edges to eachother and then clamp ! never will go any other tape again
It is excellent for that. They also make a veneer tape, but I’m not sure what the difference is. 🤷♂️👍
3M VHB👌
I've used 3M 3434 Scotch Blue tape in the past. Half the price of Tesa 4440. 3M's offering is overwhelming, though. 18 products for blue tape alone. Then again, there's got to be a 1:1 Tesa equivalent in there.
Love the way you made a seamless connection between tape and the NEC Maker's event, reminded me of the late Barry Norman! Hope this isn't a silly question but when you are using tape with glue to prevent it swimming off, would a strong masking tape you peel off first (ie just using the stickiness) work, or does it have to be double sided tape???
Thanks! And sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by the question. 🤔
What about Tracey Barlow on Coronation St. Many years ago she went upstairs to “play me tapes”. We never saw her again - very worrying...
And now for some B-roll of tape...
What kind of blade do you use on your tracksaw when cutting mdf? I have 48 and 60 teeth blades.
Never had any issues with the stock 48t blade, though I also run a ‘universal’ 28t blade and find myself hard pressed to see the difference most of the time. 🤷♂️👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop Thank you :)
Use cheap masking tape alot. And i always have a roll of insulating tape . Duct tape .
Most bodacious
My local shop has a green tape. How does that fit in?
Frog tape - I’ve used it, don’t seem significantly better than the cheaper eurocell, was less costly but not as sticky as the Tesa. 👍
You don't want to know how it's made.
Using frogs 🐸? 😆
absolutely new:
me: hold my coffee...
Him: no i will tape it....
All the the stuff about tape you never knew you needed to know. NEC should have called that Shroëdinger’s tape. ;) always get coloured MDF envy when I watch your videos.
£18!!!
I know, right? 😯🤷♂️
Most things worth doing aren’t cheap.
Discuss 🤔🙂
