This is the first time in an entire lifetime of being unable to hear a beat that a lesson hasn't felt like it's skipping the first five steps. Usually the advice is 'just clap along' with no advice on what to do if you can't do that. But this is broken down so much more that even just following along once, I can start to see where everything falls apart for me, and it's not right at the first hurdle! Which means maybe I can improve! Thank you so much

great series, Ruairi. I play fiddle and flutes but five years ago i buyed second hand an O'Kane bodhran and after many many years of listening to it, i discovered i was just ready for it, i didnt have to learn it, it flow naturally. i love playing fiddle, but playing bodhran JUST FEELS GREAT

this is incredibly heplful! My dad is deeply into dancing, but he seems to have some problems with rythm and dancing on time, so i started giving him some sort of lessons (i'm a producer btw), but i hope this video really helps out, cause i'll be sending it to him. Great work

Thank you so much for these videos! I actually bought a bodhrán in Dublin about a decade ago and "taught" myself to play it based on what I thought I saw others doing. As it turned out, due largely to my poor eyesight, I'd greatly misinterpreted the basic playing methods. Now that I've been learning from an actual professional in these videos, it all makes so much more sense! I will say that the main thing that's still giving me trouble is figuring out how to go from the tap stroke immediately back to an up stroke. My muscle instinct is to follow a tap with another down stroke. Any tips?

It’s 7/8 time… counted as 3 - 2 - 2 (which = 7). To visualize it for you: 3 - 2 - 2 (1,2,3) - (1,2) - (1,2) Listen to the beat carefully and notice the accented pattern and you’re good to go! 😊

I still dont understand the purpose of the whole bottom number. Upper number tells how many beat per bar, but the second is still a total mystery. I allways thought it was the amount of bars for chord progress like 8 bar blues for example

Merci Ruairi pour ce très beau sujet😊❤. J'habite le sud de la France mais mes origines sont en partie Bretonnes. Depuis plus de 35 ans je fais de la musique commençant par la guitare basse puis guitare pour glisser depuis une dizaine d'années vers les percussions. Aujourd'hui je dirige une Batucada sur des rythmes de samba mais pas que😊..... Depuis peu une satané maladie m'oblige a reduire le rythme de mes activités supportant très difficilement le moindre effort physique. Lors d'une soirée j'ai osé approcher le Bodhran.... Et ça a été pour moi comme une révélation... Une évidence même 😮 Comme si ce tambour avait toujours fait partie de mon histoire........ J'ai pris quelques cours et suivi tes vidéos entre autres😉 pour essayer d'avoir une approche un peu plus traditionnelle mais je trouve que c'est l'instrument idéal pour transmettre ses émotions . Merci pour ce que tu donnes dans tes vidéos et qui sait....au plaisir de te rencontrer un jour 🍀🍻
