  • In this video I'll show you how to play in 7/8 time on the Irish bodhrán. 7/8 is such a great metre to get to know with your bodhrán and we will look at 3 different patterns in 7/8 time. This is the 5th week of Bodhrán Bootcamp, and I hope you all enjoy getting stuck in!
All the information you need on the 7/8 practice track pack in I mention in the video is at the link below⬇️
    www.ruairiglasheen.net/78-tim...
I created this practice pack for those wanting to develop their playing in alternate time signatures, with a focus on 7/8 time. Each pattern has 6 practice tracks with varying speeds and with/without click options. In total, there are 18 tracks and 43 minutes of audio across the entire package.
    Track 1 - 100 BPM w/ click
    Track 2 - 100 BPM no click
    Track 3 - 120 BPM w/ click
    Track 4 - 120 BPM no click
    Track 5 - 140 BPM w/ click
    Track 6 - 140 BPM no click
The loops feature live percussion instruments arranged, mixed and mastered by me and are inspired by particular places I’ve visited. I hope you find these tracks helpful and enjoy playing along to them as much as I did creating them.
The pack is available for immediate download on purchase and you can find out more about each of the three patterns below
    Dasht-e Kavir
This practice track uses a mixed ensemble of Persian and Middle Eastern percussion instruments, led by the tonbak drum. The structure of this track is 2-2-3 and there are 2 bars of count in by the zarb drum before the groove kicks in. The inspiration for this rhythm bed is Iran’s great central salt desert, the Dasht-e Kavir.
    The Grand Bazaar
This practice track uses a mixed ensemble of Middle Eastern percussion instruments, led by the darbuka drum. The structure of this track is 3-2-2 and there are 2 bars of count in by the triangle before the groove kicks in. The inspiration for this rhythm bed is the Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, one of the biggest indoor markets in the world with over 4000 vibrant shops and stalls to be inspired by!
    Mamallapuram
This practice track uses a mixed ensemble of Hindustani and Carnatic percussion instruments, led by the kanjira and ghatam. The structure of this track is 2-2-3|3-2-2 and there are 4 bars of count in by the tabla before the groove kicks in. The inspiration for this rhythm bed is the town of Mamallapuram, a world-renowned UNESCO heritage site known for its exquisite stone carvings and stone temples located about 60 kilometres south along the coast from Chennai in the south of India.
I’m Ruairi Glasheen, and I’m a percussionist, composer and filmmaker based in London. I’ve been playing bodhrán since I was 4 years old and I simply love this instrument! Thanks Ruairi! This is awesome! I absolutely love the idea of combining the bodhran with music from other cultures. It is my absolute favourite thing to do! I think it’s important stretch ourselves as players, and your videos are a perfect way to achieve that. Am absolutely loving the Bootcamp series! It’s the highlight of my week! 😄 Cheers from Down Under!

I'm finishing the composition of my first album, prog/folk style, and one of my songs has a single passage with alternating measures in 7/8 and 9/8 ... I had a bodhran at Christmas, it really makes me want to put some on this track. Thank you, your videos are great, they helped me to get to grips with this instrument, and I feel that I'm already making progress.
