Candelora at Montevergine: A Documentary featuring Marcello Colasurdo

On February 2nd every year, pilgrims’ hike to the Sanctuary of Montevergine near Avellino in Italy where a 750 year old portrait of the Madonna, or Mary Mother of Jesus is displayed. This Madonna is known as Mamma Schiavona, or Mother of Outcasts, and is considered to be a protector of the LGBT+ communities, which includes the much loved Neapolitan third gender, known Femminiello.
In this second part of my documentary series Rhythms of Italy, I learn about this beautiful tradition, and almost mystical surroundings of Montevergine. I meet Marcello Colasurdo, Vladamir Luxuria and many incredible musicians, dancers, and pilgrims along the journey.
Rhythms of Italy is my documentary series exploring and uncovering the remarkable musical traditions of the Vesuvius area in Campania, Southern Italy. The music of this volcanic land are underpinned by the thundering rhythms of the tammorrra, a giant tambourine that has been played here for over 2000 years.

Heartbreaking to share that Marcello Colasurdo has left us.
Marcello was the voice of a generation, keeper of traditions, and an artist who had an incredible impact. Marcello is the sound and soul of Vesuvio.

When I was an American child growing up in the area and seeing these pilgrimages and telling my mom I was catholic, she gave me a very southern Baptist answer.
I still got my Madonna.

This was fascinating! The gathering is so so joyous (and well-deserved after that trek). Whilst social engineering creates, destroys and divides, music nourishes the spirit/soul! I'd not heard of Vladimir Luxury before and really enjoyed listening to her. I can't help re-hearing her words, "when I confessed......", she hadn't committed a crime so there was nothing to confess to.
