  • Welcome to How to Play Bodhrán : Begin Your Journey 🎵☘️🙌
    bodhran.teachable.com/p/how-t...
In this first instalment of my course, we will start from the very beginning, exploring when the Irish bodhrán came from, and its role within traditional Irish music, to setting you up with the absolute fundamentals of technique and musicianship you’ll need to set a strong foundation for your bodhrán playing.
Whether you are a complete beginner or have been experimenting with the bodhran and are looking for a deeper understanding of the fundamentals, this course is for you.
I’ll show you how to hold the bodhrán and tipper, and how to play with a relaxed grip, and make a clear and consistent sound. I’ll also will give you exercises to develop independence between the playing and tonal hand.
If your wondering which bodhrán to get, and there are a lot of options to choose from, I’ll explore different sizes and styles of drum so you can decide which drum is best for you.
The course has been designed with the bodhrán player in mind. Work through 8 modules of content at your own speed, and in your own time. We start at the very beginning working through the fundamentals, tonal hand, reels, jigs and a range of dynamic technical and music exercises.
One of the trickiest things when developing your practice on the bodhrán is finding suitable steady tracks to practice along to, and I have recoded a set of 10 tracks especially for this course with the bodhran player in mind. They come with and without the bodhran part, so you can clearly hear how the music all fits together
One of biggest challenges for a beginner bodhrán player is finding suitable music to practice with. I’ve recorded 4 tracks comprising 7 tunes in total especially for this course and together I’ll take you through a selection of brilliant patterns so you can play along with confidence. The tracks feature Aleksandra Henszel on flute and whistle, and Dave Dellare on guitar.
Finally, I’ll also talk about practice, and help you to build a routine, which is really crucial to making that all important progress. To develop on bodhran, all you need is commitment over time Looking after your physical body is also important when learning any musical instrument so I have some really juicy bodhran specific physical warmups I know you’ll love, that you can include into your practice.
This course built on my 25 years of playing the bodhrán , which includes 10 years of teaching and sharing this instrument online and in person and after 12 whole months of production, I really can’t wait to welcome you all in my studio to join me for my course, How to Play Bodhrán : Begin Your Journey

I really would love to be part of it :) But first I have to buy an instrument :D Maybe a good decision is one from Brendan White you talked about in the video before 🤔

I bought miself a Bodhran for my 64th birthday intending to learn to play but have not done much so this feels perfect timing!
I have been looking around for a teacher here in Bolton. This course sounds just the job for me. Excited to begin.

I will turn 59 end of this month and just got my bodhran. Use to have one when I lived in Scotland, wish I still had that one. He is such a good teacher! ♥️

Hi, I received one of the cheaper bodhrans for Christmas - I'm assuming it was meant for decorative purposes but, I noticed it came with a tipper. I'm early 50s and remember seeing The Corries and The Chieftains on TV as a kid and so I thought, why not have a bash at it. Found your videos on CZcams and then your course online, so here I am. If I can get to grips with it, I can always upgrade to something a bit better later on. Thanks very much for having this content available. Best Wishes, Mary. ☺️

Hi I love your videos! I'm having trouble finding any lesson videos online where people are playing while standing. I'm having trouble holding it while standing (I have a cross bar) but I don't want a strap :(

Great, I'm in! Somehow got into the irish session scene in holland and have been asked by few bands. Kind of dumbstruck, didn't think my playing was up to that yet but must be doing something right.
Do you have advice on mic-ing live. Preferably wireless and with little feedback from monitors? What microphone is the right choice and what angle would you recommend?

Good morning Ruairi, I finally acquired a bodhran after waiting so long. I got it for Christmas and it's a McNeela non-tunable. So, this is the beginning of my journey and I'm so pleased to be learning with you. Thank you so much

I play already a bit..and play with a folk band that is based in Yorkshire and sometimes accompanies clog dancing gigs..
I just ‘twiddle’ though ..usually following the main melody beat and not really accenting ..
I would love to be able to play properly and get the lovely tonal qualities out of my drum..and keep a proper timed rhythm
So am definitely interested in the course as have watched your videos and like your teaching style a lot !.
But am worried some of the course will be for very beginners so I might not get so much out of some of it..so wondering what you thought ?!

Hey Ruairi, I love your videos! Just started with your free lessons here on CZcams I have so much fun with the rudiments and patterns you offer here for free! Sadly I would like to enroll your course but unfortunately I have no credit card. Is there a way to pay the course via paypal? That would be so great!
