- The remarkable festival of Madonna delle Galline has been taking place in Pagani, Southern Italy for many hundreds of years. Think drumming, dancing, ancient songs, and… chickens?! In this fifth instalment of Rhythms of Italy, join me as I excavate the stories and rhythms at the heart of this magical and ancient tradition.
Rhythms of Italy is my documentary series exploring and uncovering the remarkable musical traditions of the Vesuvius area in Campania, Southern Italy. The music of this volcanic land are underpinned by the thundering rhythms of the tammorrra, a giant tambourine that has been played here for over 2000 years.

Astute observation made: The church proposes the solution to the problem yet it is the cause of the problem. Kind of like government.
Ruairi, there's a book called "The Queen of Heaven," written in the nineteenth century by an unfortunate Methodist missionary stationed in the Naples area. He was absolutely aghast and beside himself at what was Christian "religion" in Naples, and described the festivals of Candelora, La Madonna Nera of Avellino, and this festival. He claimed it was paganism and not Christianity. He has to be given some consideration as he was Protestant, and didn't understand or condone "worship" of the madonna at all in the first place, and that such worship should take place in a Christian country caused him a great deal of grief. A book's worth.
The feminelle, or men dressed in women's clothing, present at these festivities goes back to ancient times. The goddess Cybele was worshipped with tambourines by a cult of men who are said to have, in frenzy of worship, castrated themselves and carried on her ministry, I guess you could call it. (Reminds me of when I was researching madonnas and a flock of priests threw me out of the cathedral in Siracusa when I arrived a day too early for the procession and had to leave that night. They wouldn't let me even peek at the madonna they were protecting who was in the next room.) Today this is transgenderism, and, recently, some of the transgender community have been joining the people worshipping the madonna.
