    Independence from Sweden happened in august 1905. 17. mai is celebration of the independence from Dnmark and the signing of the Constitution 17. mai 1814. The Consitution day has been celebrated from the 1820's. Did you know that Hurra actually means 'kill'. But it's not the meaning to shout 'kill, kill, kill', hehe.. Btw, he got a cramy color because that's the way that regional bunad is. Gratulerer med dagen!

    I think that it’s ok for Americans to wear a bun as on 17 may most of Norway don’t own a bun as because of the price could go up to 1300 US dollars so it costs a lot I used to own one but it got too small I had it for 7 years my grandma used to make it bigger though so it would fit but it’s ok for Americans but I don’t think they’d use that much money on something that’s not even their nationality but anyway HAPPY 17 MAY EVERYONE!

    Its a spesial day for the kids 👦🇧🇻👧🇧🇻👨‍🦳🇧🇻👩‍🦳🇧🇻🙋‍♀️🇧🇻🙋‍♂️ 🇧🇻 We must meet early at their school, and every school have their corps play some of ouer parade/Norwegian songs 🇧🇻 - Then the kids after, from the youngest grades up to the oldest Then its lunch and games for the kids and parents (the kids love when we parents do the games with them Then all schools in the same distrikts meet in the town. And its a day for 🌭🌭🍦🍦🍨 so many sausages and ice-cream they wanna/make eat A short time when we greet eachother, and the next is Russetog (The Russ = they who graduate 3 years highschool. Many of them have party all night, but make it do the parade with their "busses", csrs + the most walk between and after the busses and cars, with posters, dress upp like as an example the mair, other polictians who made some "embarrasments" + other themes they can make jokes/fun about. + "celebreties", +++ irony about whats been the "headlines" this year. Google "Russetog" = then you be see them 😅 Then a few choose its enough and feel like take the bunad off (cus can be to hot) But most have plans with families and/or friends = Often spekemat og rømmegrøt (food that its tradition and typical 17 Mai - and many choose barbeque From sooo early meet at schools for the "barnetog" (the parades each school have for the kids) + the time and games at their school (when also we bring brunch/food) and spend nice time together. Most of the kids are a bit tired - so they need do what they feel like. (sooo sweet with ketchup and ice-cream on their clothes and face ❤💙😍😍 - Cus we say its "the kids day" And of course the grown up "kids" "Russen" and "Russetog" who celebrate the graduation. Most of us are with them we have deal/plan with. Finaly can sit and relax. The "Russ", - most of them start party/celebrate again And we and the kids just enjoy and relax together Its a sooo nice day with ouer traditions🙂🇧🇻 About the bunad's = different bunads from where in Norwsy your family are from. As the sweedish, - we of course welcome eeeverybody to celebrate - about if choose bunad, then i think maby choose from the same "district/from where in Norway the girlfriend/wife. Everybody say "hipp hipp hurra" and wave their life without the 🇧🇻🇧🇻🇧🇻 And "gratulere med dagen" Maby you come celebrate 17 mai + visit some of ouer beautiful country?? - And of course make video of the places you choose visit 🌍🏞🌊🏔🌌🌇🏕🌅🚅🌲🚲🌲⛴🌷🍀🌻

    We show emotions and have bodylanguage, but i have been in Italy and seen they gesturing more than us. I know many say we are "cold", different culture, - so im grateful and lucky have friends from other contries Im a "huger", and laugh a lot, - many of us are/do,, and smaltalk, also for an example, smile, say hi, and give complements, also to their kids. + If have a lot to carry, of course ask/tell I can help. Often hi and smile are enough, I smile about the "breathing" when we say æh, oh, hm, mmh, hmm ++, cus i never think or heard somone talk about it, but i understand what they talk about About talk to, and sit next to strangers, sooo many of us are not so cold,, but I know many say we are, and the different than us, - so Its sooo nice have/get friends from other contries and hear/know about how they feel about the differents. I admire the lojality we have for eachother ❤

    @mjrdainbramage Před 13 hodinami

    Christmas lasts several days, so it is probably a bigger holiday in that respect, but for Norway as a whole, I would say May 17th is bigger. This is because it involves the entire nation, regardless of things like religion, or whatever else that could keep someone from enjoying the other (typically Christian) holidays. There is nothing objectively wrong about a foreigner wearing a bunad at any time, but it is a bit sensitive as there is a lot of identity, history, and tradition involved. Although it is becoming a bit diluted now, the bunads are region specific, and it is considered a bit "rude" if you chose a bunad from a region that you don't have any connection to. One example is how it seems that half of Oslo (particularly the western parts) have ancestry in Nordland, as the Nordlandsbunad is extremely popular there, and it is considered one of the most (if not the most) beautiful bunads. This is definitely a tongue in cheek statement, so take it for what it is, but it points out the attitude towards choosing a bunad based on looks, rather than connection. Most of the population doesn't really care that much (those who REALLY care are referred to as The Bunad Police), but as with any tradition it's one of those things that makes Norwegians go "well, you aren't supposed to change it...". If you were to buy a bunad, and just show up as a tourist to celebrate May 17th wearing that bunad, it would get mixed reactions, almost like a form of cultural expropriation. Not really wrong, but a bit of a gray area. That said there are Norwegians that are vehemently opposed to non-ethnic Norwegians wearing bunads, but they are few, and far between. May 17th is NOT our independence day, but it symbolizes a very important step on the way there. 17th of May 1814 is the day our own constitution became official, but independence from Sweden took almost another 100 years as it didn't happen until 1905. If you consider the fact that 1905 was the end of around 500 years of foreign rule/administration, you can probably see why Norwegians are a proud people; sometimes even considered too proud according to Swedes in one of your previous videos. The reason he said train is because there is a difference between the use of certain words in English vs. Norwegian: * 17. mai tog (which is the word we use) literally translates to 17th of May train. Think of if like a long line of people, just like the carriages of a train, which is exactly what it is. * Parade (pronounced a bit different than the English word) is associated with the military, which is something that our celebration parade does NOT want to be associated with. It is however translated to parade in English because that would be understood as the same thing. The building with the columns in front is the Norwegian Royal Palace. The bunads are almost entirely made of wool, so wearing a white jacket is just wool that hasn't been dyed. It has no significance that it's white, it is simply the look that was chosen when that particular region created their bunad a long time ago.

    17 May is probably the real big day for the whole country. It is celebrated in every town and valley, in the mountains and by the sea. The day often starts with a family breakfast, where the large family meets as early as 08.00. After breakfast there is a children's parade at 10.00, and after the children's parade we often go to a cafe or similar, and eat cake. Then it's home, to get ready for the BBQ and family party we're having, where anyone who wants to can come. And often there are many of us, where neighbors and acquaintances come. It's a great day, but it's also tiring at times. I would like to mention that a men's jacket costs about 2,500 dollars, and the ladies's costs about 3,000-5,000 dollars, so this is not a common pr
