As an American I have never heard of the Norwegian town of Sortland. Today I am very interested in learning about Sortland and seeing it for the very first time. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

I’m from Southern Mexico and was an exchange student in Sortland!! It’s such a charming little town, my school was in a different island (Stokmarknes in Hadsel) which was even smaller but the whole experience was so unique and incredible. So random to see a video about the “blue city” but it definitely brought back so many nice memories :)

I live there ..Sortland .. "Blackland". Sort is black on Norwegian so it should be painted black..lol . and in some villages all houses are painted white like in Son and Drøbak

Remember that people used fewer colour words in the past.
Blue was considered a shade of black for instance instead of a separate colour.
To begin with humans only had 2 distinct colours, bright and dark, then three and so one.
All of our current colours where considered shades of those colours.
And different languages still have different colours that are named, with various colours only being colours in some languages while they're shades of other colours in other languages.

Service announcement. Norway will not face rising ocean because Norway is rising faster then the ocean is. Norway is actually growing, not shrinking like most other coastal nations.

Well this was unexpected and quite random to see an American YT'er react to the city where I've lived in or close by for most of my life.😄👍👍
I'm one of those that'd LOVE the bridge to be painted blue... Imagine THAT photo of the Hurtigruten (the ship) passing under the bridge, either in winterlight or during midnight🌞!?
I wish that the municipality govern would be ballsy enough to demand that at least all new buildings exterior in the city core, should be in the palette of blue, any shade.
FUN FACT, did you know that the last color you see before it becomes dark, is blue? It's the last color to fade to grey/black.
Sortland is the "trading centre" of Vesterålen, in the area of Lofoten and Vesterålen (Lo-Ve). Lofoten is known for a lot of things, but mostly TOURISM.

This was the first proper spring day in Oslo. I am a 65-year-old man and took a ride in the forest with my e-bike until the snow stopped me. The feeling of spring, after a long hard winter is delicious. The sun warmed for the first time. Although the forest roads were a bit bumpy, it was a great spring day. 😎

Hurtigruten had its first route in 2. july 1893 and it was a means to ensure faster travel between Trondheim and Hammerfest to carry people, mail and goods faster, because at that time it could take 3 weeks during summertime and 5 months during winter, and with Hurtigruten those times would be shortened to just 7 days both summer and winter.

  • @mari97216

Many of the towns along the southern coast of Norway have a lot of wooden houses painted white. That's a sort of signature of southern towns like Risør, Tvedestrand, Arendal, Grimstad, Lillesand, parts of Kristiansand, Mandal and Flekkefjord.

Sortland looked better before the blue thing, now its a mess with to many shades of blue. I dont live there myself but been up there almost every summer growing up, and have 95+ % of my family in the near areas of Sortland incl. my parents (My father used to work at Nyksund back when it was a fishing town, hard as heck work). Hurtigruten is a cruise ship company, originated as a transport company along the cost from Trondheim to Kirkenes. at 14:00 you can see some of the military ship stationed there, like the navy version of the coast guard, keeping a close eye on all boat and plane activity in the "Norwegian sea".
Nice enough town even in winter, not cold at all due to being a coastal town and the Gulf stream (the North Atlantic Drift), and is far from isolated. Sortland in situated on the largest island in Norway with easy access for vehicles, boats, plane (im not sure if the airfield is still operating though, one of the richest countries in the world can afford to keep things like that open).
