First lesson when you have to find a percentage of an amount. You've done a bunch of equivalents... from percent to fraction (and if not, please do it now). In this video we put that to use and start finding a percent amount. The method is not difficult, just follow the steps. You can ACE this stuff!

Now that students can recall their tables, it's time to multiply greater numbers. Many teachers will know that some students just don't GET putting the tens digit up top. They experience number dissociation - they lose the plot that this tens digit belongs with this ones digit. And what about the adding when they are working solo? Do they add it before they multiply? If this is all too familiar...

We don't all think the same way. Here's a way to work out a percent of an amount that many students find low-stress. • @LetsDoMath
      @LetsDoMath Před 8 dny

      54 is not too bad because it’s only 2 digits. Forgive the lack of division symbol as go through this for you. I’m on my phone and I don’t know how to get that on my phone keyboard. 🥴😬 Let’s try it a different way. We can just list the factor pairs. We know we are going to start with 1, right? So 1x54 Imagine our page in 2 sides: on the left I’m going to write the paired factors and on the right, any working out we need to write down to help us. So we have started with 1x54. 54 is an even number so you know 2 is a factor. In the right, work out 54 divided by 2… 27 On the left write 2x54 I know 3 is going to be a factor because the rule of divisibility for 3 tells me: add digits together, if the sum is in 3x table, 3 is a factor. On the right, do 54 / 3. We get 18 On the left we put 3x18 Does 4 work? Check it on the right. 54 / 4… 13.5, remainder means not a factor. You know 5 is not a factor because everything divisible by 5 ends in 5 or 0. What about 6? Well of course we know that 6x9=54 So we write that on the left too. The left hand side of the page looks like this: 1x54 2x27 3x18 6x9 Now to ace the problem, because above we have done all the work, next we just collect those factors and list them in ascending order. I like to write this under my paired factors on the left: Factors of 54: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18, 27, 54 Yes, I could have used the prime factorization method, but when you are just starting out on this sort of problem, this factor pairing approach I just went through for you will make much more sense. Actually, now you know what the factors are, you could explore the prime factorization method too if you want. 54 is from 6x9 PF of 6=2x3, PF of 9=3x3 Can you start to see how multiplying all possible combinations will get you to this factor pairs we got? The prime factorization method is better for a) you know what you’re doing with prime factorization (you’ve already done a bunch and are fully confident) and b) your teacher has given you some horrible number that you are completely stuck on and told you to use Guess-and-check to find all the factors. I once observed a teacher do this to a class of grade 7 kids who started out well but became more dejected and down on themselves as the time went on and the teacher did nothing to help them. So I came up with this strategy as a Save-All. The prime factorization method is just one strategy, and as you know there are different strategies you can use in math to arrive at your answer. Use factor pairs like I showed you, you’ll do great! 🤗😃🥰

      @teresasdrawingchannel718 wonderful! The main thing with learning any new bit of math thinking or process is to come at it with a mindset of ‘I can get this, it doesn’t matter if it takes me a few goes’. Don’t give up, get in there and try. Once you engage with it, I believe you’re always going to meet with some level of success, and that’s your starting point to build from. Getting your hands dirty is always the way to go - we learn by watching, doing alongside, then doing for ourselves. You GO, Teresa! 🤗😃🥰

      Take a look at the second one too, with repeating primes as part of the decomposition. Tbh, I don’t know that we need this very often. I came up with this method in answer to the really horrible times when I’ve seen a class be told to find all the factors using ‘guess and check’. That approach is disheartening for me, never mind seeing kids’ confidence get crushed that way! We want to enable kids as mathematicians, not leave them feeling unable to do it, or even find a way n to start beyond crappy guess n check!

    How do you get the 6 and 5/5

    • @LetsDoMath
      @LetsDoMath Před 2 měsíci

      Any number over itself = 1 whole. So for example 2/2=1, 5/5=1, 17/17 = 1. Why is that? Well you can read a fraction as so many (numerator) parts out of (so many parts) denominator. 2/2 means 2 parts out of a whole containing 2 parts. Therefore 1 whole. Whatever the fraction is that you have to subtract, you simply make 1 whole from that same denominator and obviously the same value as the numerator and reduce your whole number by that 1. Exactly like you see me do in this vid. Ex: 5 - 3/7 Becomes 4 7/7 - 3/7 Answer: 4 4/7 I hope that helps you.
