Multiply by a single digit

  • Now that students can recall their tables, it's time to multiply greater numbers.
Many teachers will know that some students just don't GET putting the tens digit up top. They experience number dissociation - they lose the plot that this tens digit belongs with this ones digit. And what about the adding when they are working solo? Do they add it before they multiply?
If this is all too familiar to you, your students will be relieved by this method. They will SEE what's going on, and will be able to develop some 'flow' with their work. This will help build confidence.
This method works great for every number whose tables you know (including 11 and 12).
Before we start multiplying with the standard algorithm for long multiplication though, that's the moment students need to learn about putting the carried/regrouped tens digit up top.
But by that point, they will be so confident and competent at multiplying by a single digit, it won't faze them.
This video is set as 'made for kids' so comments are not possible, but I hope all viewers over the age of 13 will find a way to let me know if this helped them. Multiplication success and confidence is essential to our math success.
I'm here to help, and I hope this DOES help you!
    Best,
