    Yeah!! Congratulations on your 100K+ subscribers award! You deserve it and more. I appreciate you, your gift as a teacher and your willingness to share via videos through such an entertaining app as PowToon!! After 20 years and a career change to become a math teacher, I ran into confusion & frustrations with the concepts GCF and LCM. Your explanations made them very logical & understandable, so much so that I've now moved on to conics. I still visit your videos for clarifications and tips on how to teach. (PS. I didn't imagine your physical features while watching the videos but you're smart & beautiful!) Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with all who desire to learn.

It does involve more videos than I was hoping for, but because of that it will allow more time and headspace for concepts to get in there and mature properly. I am green-screening some stuff today. • @LetsDoMath
      @LetsDoMath  Před 2 lety

      Thank you so much!! It is my intention to get into the high school stuff of course. Unfortunately the difficulties really start much lower and by the time students get to high school, many are already lost. That's why I started where I did. In large part, that's why there are so many adult learners, and I just LOVE to help them out too by making the math approachable and manageable.
      I used to think that Fractions, decimals and percents was the first key hurdle in maths. But it turns out that division is the first stumbling block because so many students are only ever introduced to long division, and in my view that is a massive failing of student needs. I first met that at age 10, when I had been confidently using short division for at least 3 years, just like everyone else in my class. Plenty of time for the idea of finding a remainder to sink in so that when we finally encountered the lengthy set of steps involved in long division, while we all found it a pain, we were at least able to understand the point of it.
      I'm taking a week away from percentages this week and doing rational, irrational and real numbers, which you might find useful. I've had 3 requests for this recently, and people are going to find it easy enough after seeing the vid I'm making.

    • @LetsDoMath
      @LetsDoMath  Před 3 lety

      Thank you very much for this! I also wish that the teaching I’d had was like this. I am a visual learner (and I think most people are), plus I need to bolt new learning to concepts already in place; to make connections. I think we all do. That’s what I always try to do, so the learning makes sense. I think if I’d had access to these vids when I was in school, my attitude towards maths would have been very different. It took me ages to overcome the math-resistance I’d built up.
      With Let’s Do Math (and letsdomath.ca) I’m trying to help learners never start building those barriers in the first place, and to take them down piece by piece if they are already part of us. There are many adult learners who use my channel, which inspires me very much; it takes a lot to admit it’s difficult for us, and persevere through that struggle, but we are stronger for it. We can beat this together and be successful in math! 🤗🤗🤗

      I have taken a break. I’m coming back - I haven’t finished with math. Im in elementary school and due to COVID and our out of class learning, there are students whose reading is not where I’d like it to be. I have been focussing a ton of creative energy to how we can slide the learning in for these students. Some of them are resistant to learning and I’m using games (NOT computer or iPad!!) to help engage them. And the best thing is… it’s helping!
      I expect I will switch back to math in June, but just now I’m full steam ahead on this early literacy stuff because it will hold so many students back. 🤗

  • @dylanakent
    @dylanakent Před 2 lety

    Congratulations! I'm a otherwise A student who got left in the lurch during the 1970s when "new math" was introduced in elemetary school. My mother, who learned traditional arithmetic and math was furious. She was told by my teacher that if I came into class and suddenly started to get the correct answer, the teacher would know that I had been coached in the old way vs new math and she would FAIL me.
    We spent the entire 6th grade learning the binary system because "one day we'd all be using computers". Within a few years our class was so bad at math and so confused, our 8th grade math teacher was entirely flustered at how the system had failed us. He literally gave up and read the newspaper all day in our class because we were so far behind. He said "do the rest of your homework, you're unteachable". All but a handful of 150 students failed HS math.
    Not living up to my math potential shut so many doors in my life before I even had a chance. It burns me up until this day. And when I see this nonsense called "common core" being taught in American schools, it drives me mad. They have made another generation even more math illiterate. Keep doing what you're doing. Your work matters.

    • @LetsDoMath
      @LetsDoMath  Před 2 lety

      Thanks very much. Sorry, but you're getting a full reply. You might want a cup of tea (or coffee) while you read this.
      I feel so bad for you, for this awful experience. I get the point of new thinking, it's part of our professional development to take on new ideas. But that doesn't mean you have to throw old ideas out. And to me, if you throw away something that worked previously on the chance that this new idea is better, and then it fails everybody... well then you made a huge mistake and in fact employed a dogmatic approach, not a caring one. You failed your students, you failed as a teacher.
      I can imagine your mum confronting the teacher about new math, and I can see the teacher digging her heels in. Unstoppable force meets immovable object. Teachers have to reckon with the fact that a student's parent (mom in your case) is that child's first and most potent teacher. You want to bring that hugely important relationship in to help, not try to cut it off! If the teacher had tried to have a discussion with your mom, and explained what she was trying to do and how she was trying to do it, maybe the door would have been opened for tweaking the idea so that some old stuff was incorporated too, and maybe everyone would have been helped. At the very least, maybe your mom could have had the teacher realise that multiple methods are better than just one. And her threat! That made my blood boil.
      Your 6th grade binary experience rang bells for me. I'm sure we couldn't have spent the whole year on adding and subtracting base 9 through 2, but it was a lengthy period and it's STILL in permanent memory for me, and I seem to remember the same crap about us needing it for computers. I would have been in second year of primary school at the time, it was Mrs Robinson's class. She of the scary attitude that made me pee my pants that time I went to ask for help. I didn't make THAT mistake again!
      The 8th grade teacher who wouldn't teach... how the heck did he live with himself? And when the whole class was failing, how come he wasn't observed and MADE to teach? Where were his professional ethics? Again... I'm livid.
      I came to teaching because I care passionately about student success. And it's a bizarre twist of fate that I love to teach math because I struggled just like you as a kid. I had to take GCSE maths as an adult because I didn't pass it in school, and I largely taught myself. You can imagine the hours I put in.
      Then when I had my kids in Canada we had our own problems, starting with learning tables. The Ontario math curriculum document that was in play while my kids were in elementary school was published in 2005. It wasn't explicitly stated that students must not learn their tables, but it wasn't stated that they must either. In schools, the teachers told us that this 'rote' learning was not wanted. The students were to develop understanding instead. I told my kids that even if they weren't learning tables in school, I required it, because it would give them a host of benefits (confidence, fluency, speed, accuracy...)
      Fast forward to 2020 and learning tables is in the latest curriculum document, including my reasons why they need it.
      Now let's go back a few years. I was supply teaching in the school where my kids had gone. I was in a grade 5 class, covering a math period with these kids. We were doing long multiplication and these kids were FAST. I mean they were roasting hot on their multiplication and I was intrigued. I'd never seen a class this smart and confident, or polite and responsive to a supply teacher either, to be honest. I had a discussion with them about their math, opening with the fact that I'd never seen a class this smart at multiplication before, what was their secret. They told me their teacher was their 'drill sergeant major'. I asked if they practiced tables in class and they said yes, but it was a secret. I told them their teacher had done them a very great service and they were awesome and should keep doing what they were doing. Of course they looked REALLY pleased with themselves.
      At the end of the day, I bumped into their teacher and I complimented her on the class and how amazing they were at math. She said thanks and looked kind of embarrassed. I lowered my voice and told her they'd said she was their drill sergeant major and she got this kind of panicked look on her face. She said please don't tell anyone. I told her of course not, and again said that she'd done the class a massive service; I'd never seen a class this math-strong before. She quietly told me that learning tables like this was 'not done' and the only reason she had been able to manage it was that she was out in a portable. I reinforced how lucky the class was to have her and she was genuinely pleased, but looked worried in case anyone was around to overhear the conversation. What a state of affairs!
      So now, all those teachers who refused to make kids learn their tables are now having to reverse their position and actually teach it, and she can happily continue in the open now, what she had done before to give those kids what they needed.
      I'm not trying to claim I have all the answers, of course I don't! I am ready to take on new ideas too, but I'm not willing to abandon stuff that works just because it might not be the current trend. And look at that, the current trend is to bring in the old idea that we do actually need to internalise our tables.
      Education is always a work in progress. Everyone has been through it, so everyone has first hand expert knowledge, and yet after all this time it still hasn't been perfected. We can just do what we can do, we have to care about the students, they must come first. Student success and development is the goal, not forcing a method on them. Not making them feel bad or lesser if they can't manage a particular method, but finding a way for them to succeed.
      Big hugs,
      Ginny Steele

      I always use Google Translate on a language I don't know. I could have whizzed upstairs to ask my daughter (she's currently doing Japanese level 2 in university), but I want to know right now! Thanks for sending me an English note too.
      私はいつも知らない言語でGoogle翻訳を使っています。娘(現在大学で日本語レベル2をやっています)に2階で急いで聞いてもいいのですが、今すぐ知りたいです!英語のメモも送ってくれてありがとう。

      Awww, thanks for the encouragement. I am on a course that takes all of my outside work time at the moment. But happy news: it ends mid-December! Woohoo!! I will be free to do YT then. Until then, best place to find what you need on my channel is actually through my website letsdomath.ca. You go to the signpost labelled Resources and scroll through math topics. Much quicker than the YT interface. 😃🤗🥰

      I needed a break, but then when I’d had enough of that I became very busy at school. Right now I’m on a professional development course which finishes on 7 December. Looking forward to getting back to it. Sorry you’re waiting. I literally have no time at the moment.

      Yup. I recorded this in front of my monarda flowerbed, as I was hoping that we might be visited by a hummingbird while filming, but no such luck. Oh well…🤗
