I just love making these videos to help students. As a kid, a lot of math seemed to exist in its own little vacuum bubble, and aspects weren't connected. There's too much of 'this is the way we do it'. THE way, the ONLY way. I'm big on alternative strategies because what seems simple and intuitive to some, is dense and impenetrable to others. And I can't tolerate the idea that a teacher would mark someone's work wrong, when they got the right answer, just didn't use the strategy the teacher wanted.
My own kids have experienced this and I think it's desperately unfair, limiting and damaging to a student's developing math-confidence as well as overall self-confidence. If I see a student do that, I want them to show ME their method, because I want to learn it too. I VALUE thinking.
Richard Feynman (Nobel Physicist and the guy who demonstrated the faulty O-rings on the Challenger that caused its disastrous breakup) invented his own method of doing calculus as a kid, way before any teacher showed him. He noticed things and connected the dots in a way that made sense to him, and in my view, that's to be encouraged. Who knows what creative and innovative thinkers may evolve when students are given the freedom to connect ideas in their own way, if they want?
I'm trying to guide people to the easiest thinking path with my website. I've sorted videos according to topic and we just start at the top and make sure we've got everything as we progress down the list. But people don't always do it that way, especially from within the CZcams channel itself. I want to make it as easy as possible for learners of all ages to get through this stuff, and the easiest way (I believe) is the order I'm putting the lessons. I'm working on practice exercises to go with videos though I'm juggling a lot of other stuff at the same time. It's just me, and I'm doing my best to help. It's so much fun to get positive notes like yours, and those of students who've turned a corner and are now meeting success. I LOVE that, and I'll keep on developing videos and practice on my channel/website to keep on helping as many people as I can. 😃🤗💕😎

Hi Stephanie, thanks so much for this! We are alike; we are open communicators who say what we mean and try to do it as positively as we can, I think. I'm Aquarius, not Scorpio, but I think we can ALL choose to communicate the way you and I do. You just have to not be afraid to type quite a bit. Some people seem to feel a response has to be minimal. I like to know what a person is thinking so I'm happy to get a long note, and to reply at length too. It's so much more substantive to say what you really mean than just 'great job', don't you agree?
Southwestern Ontario... Lucky you! Much nicer weather. I think you don't have the 70 degree temperature swing we get in Ottawa from the coldest day in winter to the hottest day in summer. It's something else, especially for an English person - we get maybe a 30 degree swing there.
I'm so glad you like the website! I wasn't even sure I could do it at first! I've had several false starts at it over the past 3 years, then at the beginning of January I woke up in a panic, thinking "What if someone buys letsdomath.ca?! I have to buy the URL RIGHT NOW, and get going on it!" So I tried again with a pre-made template and got exactly nowhere. Then I took a blank page and it just rolled right along. But that's how I make each video anyway. I'm no good starting from someone else's ideas - they constrain me in a way that stymies my creative path. I find it helpful to look at someone else's layout, but never to swap bits out and do it that way. It's just not me.
Plus for some time I have found myself hunting for videos on my CZcams channel, even though I know where everything is. It's like I can't see a particular tree for the forest in front of me. The website lets me get swiftly to exactly what I want.
It will be fantastic if we can switch your daughter on to liking math! It helps so much if they can acquire the stuff on my channel/site early because it builds self-confidence, which is hugely important to future success. The other thing that's super-important is never chucking out last year's mathbook! It's the quick review for next year, when the same topic comes up and you build on it. What a drag to have to relearn everything all over again, only to then add a little bit to it. This is how students end up feeling like they never get anywhere in math!

@@stephaniet.8514 Hi Stephanie! I have had a busy afternoon getting a custom-print t-shirt sent off to the printers in England for my Dad's birthday! It took longer than I anticipated as I wasn't quite happy with a couple of things, but I think I have aced it. It's the yellow pencil over the Let's Do Math logo in a smile shape. My Dad's been following my channel's progress for months now, and rooting for me to get to 100k. I told him I'd get a t-shirt made up to mark the event. Today I finally completed that promise. Now I'd better get back into channel and website stuff!!
Here's another tip you and your daughter might like. When I take notes, I use multiple colours of ink. Not too many on a page, but enough to make things stand out. It makes it more pleasant to write the notes and I'm much more likely to quickly find what I need in a notebook when I've actually used different colours to differentiate things. I tend to remember things by colour, in a way. If it was all in one colour I know (from experience) that I won't find it and I'll get in a flap. If your daughter is visually-oriented, different colours might help her too.
I like nice colours, but I don't want to write in marker, so I've recently expanded my fountain pen and inks collection. Diamine Inks from Liverpool come in some gorgeous shades, exactly right for my needs, and I got them for an astonishingly inexpensive $2.32 (Cdn) for each 30ml bottle. The hot place to get them is Cult Pens in Devon. They're on the web of course. They're about a 40 minute drive from my Dad's place, which I found enjoyable. You can get a few shades through Amazon.ca, but they are really marking it up. I'd rather support a niche place that sells very reasonably and ships fast to Canada.

As for simultaneous equations... I have to delay on that. I can't help but feel I have to put in all the groundwork before I get there. It's going to be ages before I get to that. I wish I could clone myself and have double or triple the output so I could move stuff along faster.
I'm in percentages right now and while I've planned the sequence, I haven't written all the scripts or done all the accompanying work. And I'll have to do one featuring word problems too. There's just so many ways percentages can crop up and floor students. I'm looking at 6 vids right now, each covering just one way of working (plus a review). I won't make a huge long one because I can't stand the idea of the teaching and learning being interrupted by ads. I have to allow ads or else I couldn't justify the amount of time I spend making all these videos. So I break all teaching up into very manageable segments. I feel that benefits everyone watching.
If I were to move to a screen-capture type of video, I could go faster, but then it would be just like Khan Academy with the pseudo-board/chalk/talk. I don't want to do that.
I'm in a bind. I just have to keep going as fast as I can I'm afraid.

I give a personal shoutout on a vid when you come up with a real problem you had in class/homework, and just can't see how to solve it, and I make a video on it. This is because the way you think may not be the way I'm seeing something, and your difficulty is probably also the same difficulty of MANY people around the world. I want to help, so I value your input. Hope that makes sense.
It does sort of have to fit in with stuff I've already done, so we push the thinking. I'm on a path through the math and I don't want to stray from it, but I'm very happy to elaborate on stuff I've already covered. 😃😉😎🤗

But here's the thing... if you have covered that on whole numbers (integers), you can apply what you know there... to fractions! Yep, same rules apply!

@DiamondxX Gamer When multiplying, 2 signs the same give a positive answer. Different signs is negative answer. Hope that helps 😃🤗
That means neg x neg = positive result. So if you are doing fractions division, the same thing applies because you have the step of flipping your right hand fraction and the operation from divide to multiply. Keep the same pos or neg sign on that fraction though. Best of luck 🤞

I'll get to it at some point. Do you know your benchmark 90º? That's where you start... less than that or more than that. 180º is a straight line... less than that or more than that is where you anchor your thinking for estimating an angle.
Notice the link to the 9x table? 9, 18, 27, 36?
1 quarter circle = 90º
half a circle = 180º
3/4 = 270º
and a full circle = 360º
Not hard to remember when you link it to your tables knowledge. 🤗😃😎
