When we find a subject hard, we kind of pull into our shells a bit and things start to go downhill. We start to think we can't do it. We hide in class (head down, don't try, don't offer an answer), we copy from a neighbour who does get it, but it's only copying, not thinking (so we don't improve,) or worse, there's the disruptive behaviour. I used to do the first 2, when I was a kid!
If we can get everyone on the track to understanding in the first place and being able to do the math, and as a result feeling confident and positive about it... well then, all that negative stuff disappears and instead we have a class full of positive people with a can-do problem solving attitude. Just what the world needs, in my view. And this happens not through all having to do exactly the same (single) strategy, but by being enabled through having different ways of working open to us. If teachers listen to students explain their method or difficulty, maybe teachers will gain a greater insight into student thinking and be better able to help the student as a result.
The bottom line for me is this: I want everyone to succeed and be confident with math. This one subject can open or close career paths for us. I want all paths open so every student can follow their passion. That's the over-arching reason why I have this channel. When students succeed, I am in my element. To see that self-confidence develop... it's a beautiful thing.
