Welcome to Speargrass Forge
My name is Adam, and I am an Australian Hobby Blacksmith.

As I am starting from scratch, I am forging on a budget and will endeavor to be as helpful as I can, aiming to release a new video weekly, working my way up from starting to forge making simple tongs and basic blacksmithing tools, to making decorative features, machinery as my skills improve and grow.
I look forward to having your company and hearing from you as I progress. If you have ANY tips, advice, just or want to chat because you are learning right along with me, please feel free to subscribe, comment on your favorite video or drop me a message.

I have always wanted to get a ball and chain made
Sent that big cricket for a ride lol
He has a great teacher. Hope to see more of this young fella in the works.
Most mower blades can only be heat treated to HRC 50 which is plenty hard and tough for a mower blade, but maybe not hard enough for a hand knife.
I use my blades for a couple months and Tig Weld the cutting edge and sharpen it. It lasts.... works fantastic
Great job!
Hello again!
Just love how these notifications come in like 12 hours later lol 🤦♀️
Oh man. I missed it.
All good. It was midnight where you were. And completely impromptu on my behalf. Thanks for the comment though
Nice little project Adam may have to play with something similar when I hit the States, I reckon it would sell well.
I've been wondering if a mower blade would forge a tomahawk.
Hey I know this is an older video but I really like it and for all the newbies joining just goes to show you don't have to buy an anvil you can make your own very nicely done my friend
Sorry I missed it Adam
All good mate you gotta sleep some time
To keep the end of the material for what call fish mouth. First forge a short bevel around the end of the piece.
Good how to video! Beware of welding galvanized material. The fumes are deadly!
*promosm* 😡
Not sure what that means bud or why the angry face. But i hope youre well Obadiah. And happy Yule, Christmas, Hanukkah, or whichever holiday you celebrate at this time of year
Think I'm gonna have to make mine a bit shorter, trying to hit something head height not exactly easiest thing on my shoulders.
Looks like I welded that anvil together, we definitely both need a lot more practice 😂
7/16is 11mil!
You're right. But metric doesn't exactly translate to imperial. That's why i said about 7/16. When working with 2 systems in blacksmithing where exact tollerances aren't crucial, close enough is fine 😁 thanks for watching james
Missed it
Dang I missed it
Its all good mate. There will be others
I don’t see a hammer video🤷🏽♂️
Very useful. Keep them coming.
Hey Adam, I couldn't see it live but here I am watching the video, take care 👍
Recently found your CZcams channel and very happy that I did. I just recently got started with knife making, the old-fashioned way. Yes, I want to pound some steel. This episode is really important to me because I have accumulated several lawnmower blades, and I've been questioning whether or not they would harden enough for a decent blade. You really solved a problem for me. Thank you.
Mistakes are opportunities for artistic creativity
Still sexy... carry on.
Great to see you again adam
You look knackered - time for a beer
Missed it
Someone please teach that lad how to use a knife if he wants to keep his thumb from being slashed
Excellent! My fave smythy is back.
good ta see ya brother
Nice hammering, you could bring that hook around your jig much more for a tighter S. Even almost closed for a chain link effect. Those vice jigs are key for size consistency. Nice shop!
Great point!
I want to forge a feder, also. It's good practice for for progressing to swords. Cheers for this, mate. :) 👍
As thick as that metal is I would say that you have the freedom to turn that machine up as high as you want. That would help you a lot on those Welds I'm seeing that this is an old video and I would be curious to know how you like the anvil after using it for a couple of years? Also. How The face of those forklift Tines held Up?
Im no machineist. And getting it machined wasn't an option. That said. Due to my poor welding skill, ive boken the face plate off only once, rewelded it back on, and good old tynie is still going strong. The steel has held up like noones business.
I was referring to turning the welding machine up hotter so that the Weld would absorb a little bit better and it would be a little bit easier to Weld. But I appreciate the comment and the video.
@johnscarboroughregenerativ7240 I'm sorry! you did say that! I'm struggling with the flu at the moment. And head is a bit foggy. At that stage i wasn't that good of a welder (as shown by my welds) i was working with the little knowledge i had but youre 100% right ha ha. Cheers for the imput, i hope a newbie reads this and does better than me in the future!
cheapest steel balls i found is on flea bay under sports - shot put
Awesome
I never would’ve thought there would be a tutorial on this I’m now glad
Did you ever get to build it? /Oliver
I am living on the block. With the house build and getting the land sorted, not yet. But i have the area cleared for it now, and hopefully, fingers crossed, it will be done in the next 6 months. It's currently monsoon season here, so I have to wait for that to end, and then i can get started. It's frustrating and slow progress. However, the results will hopefully be more than worth it
@@SpeargrassForge all right, good luck with it. I'm looking forward to seeing what you build.
Heck yeah! I’m gonna build a camping machete
Never heard that accent, what part of Texas are you from?
It's an Australian accent mate haha.
@@silver6940 I think he was fucking around. At least I hope… 😆
@@silver6940 Down under Texas?
Yep, gotta watch on both my accounts...
I still can't believe he made a folding Bowie I'm still salty about that I want one I want to make one
Peggiore fabbricazione mai vista
Hmmm..I see I had already watched and commented from my other account. I enjoyed it just as much the second time...
Quit hitting a fucking hammer on the anvil shit
Thanks very much!
They can how ever produce great san mai blades as the outer layer and a high carbon steel for the core. Use 1095 or 15n20 for the core. It produces nice blades. 😁
Back in the saddle. Really enjoyed this
